Welcome back Dustin! I'm so glad you were able to sort out the problem with your channel 😊Happy Easter!
Thank you so very much. It was definitely an Easter miracle!
love your reviews they're always top-shelf!
I appreciate that!
As someone who had the A7IV and now the R6II, I appreciate the fast readout of the sensor and burst rate over the slight megapixel increase. The A7IVs silent mode I found unusable in a lot of situations
But for normal shooting a7iv is amazing with the slight bump, but I'm just a hobbyist so I love getting mid range for everything
40fps is really useful, 90% hitrate. Sony would never give more than 10 fps(compressed) 🙂
Depends on your definition of “normal shooting”. I also think that nobody will ever notice if your photo is 12mp or 61mp unless it’s printed huge
@@jordanmitchell1433 what I meant by Normal shooting is like landscape, portraits just casual, I personally felt like I can crop. I'm not saying R6ii is a bad or sub camera, just pointing out that with a7iv I was able to crop, I got R6ii and didn't shoot with it a lot, summer festivals gonna happen this month, it will be my daily driver from then.
Both cameras have unique strengths and weaknesses, but I can say personally that I’ve been quite happy with the a7IV.
I got the R6ii and returned it as I couldn't tell the difference if af and image quality. Some of the video specs/options are slightly better but for me it was definitely not worth the upgrade. Perhaps when the iii comes out. Canon did such a fantastic job on the orginal R6.
I have heard a few people who didn’t find it worth the difference in price. I thought it was a fairly strong upgrade, myself.
anyone doing research into the mk ii vs mk i would have seen that for stills, there isn’t much of an upgrade. Yes you get 40fps and slightly better AF, but the upgrade was definitely in video. And not a slight upgrade either.
4K downsampled from 7K/false color/MUCH better overheating control (almost none)/more frame rate options etc
@@gavthane Also 6K RAW external. I hope that if we bother Canon enough they will give us 6K RAW internal on this camera.
@@cjm8160 yep and that too. Unfortunately they won’t add it internally, as it’s already very close spec-wise to the R3, which already does 6K60p RAW internally.
I've been happy so far with my R6 Mk II and I actually like having the power on/off switch on the right side of the camera. Cheers!
I’m glad you are enjoying it.
Coming from the M50, I would've liked it to be a vertical rather than a horizontal slider hidden down towards the ridge if you get what I mean
The measurements at photonstophotos show that the camera is using noise reduction baked in raw file. I wonder how it affects the image quality when lifting up the shadows.
A fair question, but a difficult one to answer.
Great review! I'm holding out for the R5mkii.
I’m sure that it will come
@Dustin Abbott Great review and you always explain things so clearly, thank you! What is your opinion of the RF24-105-4L with the R6MarkII? Is it acceptable for video shooting interviews? The f2.8, although better on light is a little short for me and cost and size do not thrill me either. Thoughts?
I found the 24-105 a nice pairing with the R6 MKII
Not camera related, but nice to see some Lawhead books on the shelf. He's one of my favorite authors.
He is a very good writer
APS-C mode give you just 9+ mp with Canons 1.6 crop factor. Sony a7iv give you 14 mp. Still I use it very seldom, I can crop in post instead.
That is a huge difference.
I agree about the 30 mp Dustin. I loved the 32mp om my M6 when I had it.
That’s actually a very useful zone for resolution, in my opinion. Enough to do some cropping, not so much that you feel like you are overdoing it in many situations.
looking to pick this up as a backup to my R5
That’s a great application.
Thats what i did and love the combination. I swapped out the R6v1 and dont regret the upgrade at all. The R5 sits in the bag unless i need to have fine details when shooting fashion
As a Sony A7 IV owner:
- At this point A7 IV should cost at most 2000$ because it can't keep up with Canon R6. :(
At $2500 price point , think it as enter point for massive economical lense selection , it would be cheaper as whole setup;L lenses vs sigma , tamron third party emount
Y34r makes a good point. There are some other definite strengths for a7IV, too, like higher resolution, for one along with deeper buffers.
@@edwardm9975 no, I'll never buy Canon because the Russian Canon office has organised an illegal trip to occupied Crimea for Russian photographers, but I can acknowledge that Canon is better when it's better. The tech is there, Sony can keep up, and everything is a matter of product decisions.
Hello Dustin. I remember long ago, you wrote an article on why you purchased a 6d rather than a 5d mark iii for its advantages in low light situations. Will you be conisdering this camera for the same reasons or at least keep a copy of it as a backup? Thank you for your work and glad to see the issues with your account sorted out.
Hi Eddy, my own personal experience is a little different at this stage. I have a lot of cameras, for one. I also primarily shoot Sony at this point, and my main Canon camera (the EOS R5) I really like.
The tracking on the R6 ii is amazing much better than the r5.
and far better than sonys
It is very good. I’ve been generally happy with the R5, but I do like the more interactive tracking visually (more like the R3).
There seems to be contradictory information in your written review (I could not find a way to sign up to comment there) and what Canon says on their websites. CRAW, according to them, is lossy. But in you written review you say it's lossless. Which is correct?
Technically, it is a lossy format (unlike Sony's lossless). It's a very good lossy format, however. You can read more here: www.the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Cameras/Canon-C-RAW-Image-File-Format.aspx
Ever since I got this camera, my R5 just sits there lol
Glad they moved the on/off to the right side, so one can start the camera one handed. Still don't know why they put it on the left side on the R5 and R6
r5 is far better though
@@FordSierraIS Right? The R5 is the best camera of it's type for the price imo.
@@FordSierraIS Probably the R5's only advantages are the higher MP count, 8K video and possibly slightly better dynamic range. The R6 is similar in most other metrics and is better in low light, also has probably better auto focus at this point. Not to mention the higher frame rate and no record limit during video.
I really like the R5, myself, but I’ve become very accustomed to having higher resolution on my cameras.
I got the camera a few months back and only able to do one event and still finding my way around the new AF settings. I came from Canon 5D mark iv, so the overall feel of the camera is pretty familiar. The biggest positive is the AF system. It is night and days difference coming from 5D Mark iv. However, the focal points are not cross types, so they can only focus on vertical lines not horizontal ones. 5D Mark iv's biggest advantage over R6 ii is picture quality. I have to say R6 ii's lower resolution does show. That said, I would say the R6 ii picture quality is not bad. I would still put extra money into lenses than moving to R5. The worst part of Canon mirrorless is the lack support of 3rd party lenses. I already found out the Irix 11mm F4 fisheye does not work on the R6 ii. R6ii also packs all the goodness of mirrorless cameras.
Overall, if you are on a budget, get an used 5D Mark iv and some EF lenses makes most sense. But if you want to enjoy photography and don't want to miss any action photos, R6 ii is the way to go. BTW, I don't do videos, I know there R6 ii should beat 5D Mark iv hands down.
Some quality feedback here.
r6 mark 2 has smaller sensor than the 5d mark 4 ? the pictures seem to pop more with canon mirrorless more
@@creativegreatsvisuals Sorry, that was wrong. I meant lower pixel count, or lower resolution.
lower pixel count or lower resolution ? which of which models have more pixel count ..which has better resolution ? which is better in low light ? r6 mark 2 or the 5d mark 4?@@mrmosk2011
The R6 mark ii images look unnatural to me. Artificially sharp like an iphone. The R6 and R5 do not have this problem and the images look very sharp but very natural. Something is wrong with the R6 mark ii. First people thought it was because of the removed low pass filter but it looks like there is actual artificial sharpening. Not good.
If you shoot RAW you have more control over that, and you can change the sharpness settings for the JPEG engine in camera if you like.
There's the $2500 budget but also you'll want to be invested into the RF lens lineup
Agreed.
my gripe only with this is the poor lens selection and ibis wobble
Absolutely. That first one really bothers me.
6k prores is unnecessary
Maybe so, but there will be people that will appreciate it.
2 videos on the camera body and you list the same stupid complaint in both. I say stupid complaint because it only bothers someone that had an r6. Anyone doesn’t care about that. They may even like it.
You don't elaborate on the complaint, but I assume it is focused on the placement of the power switch. I stand by that, as it was a real world annoyance to someone that has reviewed most Canon cameras over the past decade.
@@DustinAbbottTWI sorry. Yes, I was referring to the photo video switch. In making that statement, you are assuming that all or most of the people buying the camera body are coming from the r6 or the r5. From all the groups I'm in on Facebook, it seems more like most of us came to the r6mii from other bodies and the switch isn't an issue. The only person that switch matters too in a negative way is the person coming from an r6mi and unless they needed the video improvements or the faster frame rate, they aren't going to waste the money to upgrade. And anyone interest in video or photo/video actually appreciates the switch being there and dedicated.
Tjeezzzz ... all that stupid whining about the on/off switch removed for video/stills switch. "I was used to have the on/off switch there".
Right, I stopped watching your vid there.
Hmmm, as a professional I lost shots due to that change. Since it is the only one of the their bodies to have the switch there, and if I continued to use other Canon cameras (like my R5), I would continue to lose shots. Seems like it might be worth mentioning.
