Liverpool originally applied to be called Everton they were never granted permission to play as Everton because there was already Everton... no matter how well they do it's always worth reminding them that Liverpool was their 2nd choice name.
AFC Bournemouth were originally called Boscombe FC, not taking the name Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic until after WWI. MK Dons are *officially* a new club founded in 2004. If, however, you want to trace them back through Wimbledon then they'd be Wimbledon Old Central.
Now somebody needs to make a Football Manager save with these names and coats and publish it. Bonus points if for all the other major leagues as well (Stade St Germain, Football Sky Madrid, Milan Cricket and Football, Wilhelmina Rotterdam. Today's major German clubs are lacking, being founded under their name, but Falke Eppendorf for Hamburg would be an example).
Middlesbrough was called Ironopolis before it was Middlesbrough. They played at Paradise Fields, the corner or which became Ayresome Park. There's still a bit of wall there from Ayresome Park, the rest just houses.
Great comment, Yeah we looked into this one before hand it was called Middlesbrough FC first, then several members left to form Middlesbrough Ironopolis after a dispute, technically they are listed as a separate club. Both teams debuted professionally in 1899, then they ended up merging. Hence why we used Middlesbrough FC in the video
Sheffield United's full title was Sheffield United cricket and football club, then in 1974 the South Stand was built over the cricket square, the cricket club relocated and the Pavillion demolished. Pleased you got Bradford City in as Manningham.
Definitely. Great name for its time and was probably considered quite cool but it's probably for the best that they became Rovers. The kit was awesome too: all black with a yellow sash on the shirt. It's why the pirate on the current club badge is blacked out with a yellow sash. Common second strip colours too.
You mean the team that was forced to change their name because some morons got offended on behalf of people who weren’t offended and have tried ever since to have the Redskins name reintroduced ?
Luton Town were either Luton Whitestar or Luton Excelsior…. But that team from Milton Keynes were never Wimbledon….. there used to be a team in the area called Milton Keynes City, but a more appropriate name is the Bletchley stealers…..
Luton Town were a completely different club that followed Wanderers and Excelsior. A Wanderers player then went and formed Town, so although there is a link they weren’t the same. As for MK, well as a football fan, I get it I do , but putting my YT channel impartiality cap on. we all know they were Wimbledon once, sadly, and that’s well publicised. It’s fair to say AFC are the true successor, but the actual entity became MK ☹️
Sorry ML Dpns we’re Wimbledon whom I see ply there trade at plinth lane .. with jones, wise cork etc … this new Wimbledon are not the real Wimbledon like to or not … just like arsenal are a south east London team
Nope. They were formed as Port Vale in 1876, although some dispute they were formed as Port Vale Victoria in 1879. Either way the club didn’t become Burslem Port Vale until 1884.
You have really opened a can of worms here! Southampton were originally 'St Mary's Young Men's Association'. Southampton St Mary's came a few years later when they joined the Southern League. St Mary's Church is 400m from where Saints now play - hence St Mary's Stadium.
According to the FA, the club in Buckinghamshire were FOUNDED in 2004, at the same time as Wimbledon FC were dissolved, therefore the two entities are legally different, only the players and management transferred to the new organisation. The FA subsequently awarded the intellectual property rights, including the complete playing history of Wimbledon FC, to AFC Wimbledon meaning, in the eyes of the FA, AFCW are the legal continuation of WFC.
We are aware. However we all know and it’s common knowledge that MK Dons were Wimbledon. They even played a season as Wimbledon but based in Milton Keynes in 2003-04. So whatever legal papers have been signed to what manor doesn’t cancel out the fact that the club were purchased and relocated. Hence why that’s stated in our video.
@Retro-Football-Club Yes, WFC were bought, then WOUND UP, after which all the history and honours of WFC were transferred by the FA to ACFW. By the FA's own rules, AFCW are the legal, as well as moral, contiunuation of the club - it's okay, I know you won;t back down or re-edit the video, especially as there were a few other errors (but I'm not going to list them all).
According to one account I read, Newcastle East End were formed by the merger of Stanley FC and another club called Rosewood - so which of those two should be considered the original club? To confuse matters further, their ground at St James' Park was originally the home of Newcastle West End, which went bust after a string of poor results.
@Retro-Football-Club the Trust are finding info out all the time and just very recently discovered that the clubs earliest known game is now 31st December 1884, as Cheltenham AFC, when it had previously been thought the club came into existence in 1887. So, 140 in a couple of weeks time.
It was actually called Chesterfield FC, then changed its name to Chesterfield Town. They then went out of business and reformed again as Chesterfield FC.
MK DONS WERE NOT WIMBLEDON THEY TOOK THERE HISTORY BUT NOT RIGHT, AND IF ORIENT WAS A CRICKET CLUB SO WAS TOTTENHAM, HOTSPUR CRICKET CLUB, AND ALSO THEY WERE CALLED TOTTENHAM, BUT THERE WAS ANOTHER TEAM CALLED THAT, SO THE HOTSPUR BIT WAS ADDED TO SEPARATE THE TWO.
Can you toggle the caps kick off please John 🤣 As much as we all hate to admit it, they were Wimbledon, it’s well publicised. Tottenham were formed as Hotspur Football Club in 1882 by members of the Hotspur Cricket Club, so kinda correct.
Lee, I think you’re right I think they did renounce it, but in the grand scheme of things they still were technically Wimbledon. Don’t get me wrong if I’m taking my impartial hat off got a second, i absolutely love AFC Wimbledon and what they stand for, and I see them as the correct flag bearer for the old team, however had the original club not relocated they wouldn’t exist. I think it’s one of those things that however you label it, you are going to get people who disagree.
From Wiki “Originally named "Everton F.C. and Athletic Grounds Ltd" (Everton Athletic for short), the club became Liverpool F.C. in March 1892 and gained official recognition three months later, after The Football Association refused to recognise the club as Everton.”
The press reports of local papers concerning Woolwich Arsenal joining the Football League mention Everton Athletic FC, who were told by the league to change their name. It's in the Woolwich Arsenal history books. Newcastle United joined around the same time.
Liverpool originally applied to be called Everton they were never granted permission to play as Everton because there was already Everton... no matter how well they do it's always worth reminding them that Liverpool was their 2nd choice name.
way cooler club badges back in the day
As an MK Dons customer I came here for the comments and was not disappointed.

I am so confused, why did your badge change dates on in a few years ago?

Black Arabs 👀 definitely would have been going the way of the Washington Redskins if it was still around today

We are not American. We don't give a fuck
@@liamphillips9742ever heard of the Exeter Chiefs ? 👀
Easily the best team name. If they were still called that I just might have to start following them.
You mean the team that was forced to change their name because some morons got offended on behalf of people who weren’t offended and have tried ever since to have the Redskins name reintroduced ?
Plymouth Argyle Where called Argyle Athletic FC - which encompassed Association Football, Athletics and Rugby!
Grimsby Pelham FC love it and the 3 wild boar on the original badge! 🏴🏳️🏴
Oh wow. Some improvements but for the most part the current badges are terrible. As a Stoke Sufferer ... the old badge is awesome.
Boscombe back of the net!!!! 🍒

Interesting that a lot of teams were formed from church names
West Brom were a factory team known as The George salter XI
Yep, founded as West Bromwich Strollers by workers from the George Salter works. Good little story as well 🤙🏻
I didnt know that. And I am from Birmingham
A lot of Rovers…
MK Don are NOT Wimbledon!
Well technically (sadly) the original club were, as much as you or I don’t like it 🤷🏻♂️

Cheltenham Town technically started as Cheltenham AFC, but…meh 😂
Interesting can’t seem to find anything on that on main sources.

Definitely don't think dial square fc would ever been taken seriously if they kept that name it sounds like a dodgy phone company
its not that big of a deal, its literally just the name of a workshop within the original players workplace that went on to form arsenal...
@@tom7131further more, the workshop was at the Woolwich barracks in South East London, that's were the name Woolwich Arsenal comes from
@@Nykona-Sharrowkyn Weren't they Royal Arsenal as well for a time, before adopting the "Woolwich" version?
Wigan Athletic were Wigan Borough, till 1932.

Watford were Hertfordshire rangers or Watford rovers
Liverpool were never called Everton FC and Athletics Ground Company, as the FA rejected the name before it could be registered!
Well you just answered your own statement, they were and then had to switch it when the FA refused. Everton Athletic for short 🤙🏻
From Wiki

Not 100% sure but think Leeds United may have been Leeds City.
It was a predecessor but not the same club.
Leeds City were dissolved due to financial irregularities, including paying players during the first world war, which was banned
Well Chelsea FC would still be called Chelsea FC! 🤷😆 ....next ....🤔🤨
Hence the graphic 🤷🏻♂️
