Thanks for this video. You have helped me in a number of areas. Radio being installed this week. Anyone else still doing this, I found if you use a cut coat hanger and insert the cut ends into the four holes this acts like the special tool.
I do not own one, but where I work there is a Focus in the fleet, 5+ years old with 90k+ miles and it is relatively trouble free. Every knucklehead that can draw a key drives it. I find it to be a cheapened version of an Escort, to make it affordable. Perhaps someday I will have to own one, when Escorts are no longer available. Thanks for posting your vid.
I like delsydsoftware started watching because of Saturns but all your videos are awesome. I always look forward to what is next. These radio removal videos I'm sure are very helpful to a lot of people. They make it quite tricky to take out a radio these days.
And here I was wondering about this! My Escort's cassette player doesn't work and was suffering with out listening to my CDs. Thanks for showing me that I CAN get a real stereo in my car!
Thanks so much for these video's. My manual lacks the details about this. I figured out how to get the radio loose using pieces of wire hanger, but didn't know where to unhook the temp control cable and broke it. this was before I saw your vid about testing the blower resistor and discovering I didn't need to remove radio .I was trying to get to the switch to test it.
Thanks alot for this video I had mine stolen from wal-mart parking lot now I know I can get a new from the wrecking yard without messing it up thanks alot dude
Thanks for the video I ordered a kit from eBay for 30 buck it has the round face with a cutout for a stereo the harness and the tools to remove seems simple cuz of ur video.thanks again
Another fine job Rich. Could you give us a good look at your famous panel removal tool as it appears to be home built and extremely handy. Thanks for posting.
Rich, I have thinking about adding an oil bypass filter to my Saturn to achieve 2 micron filtering. The kit is a Top Dog V $190. I have 181,000 miles on my car and figure it could get all the help it can get. Didn't know where else to post this to you so doing it here. What is your opinion on this?
Okay. This worked well. I got the old radio out. I'm replacing with OEM model. How do I line up the heater control so the settings on the knob (cold/hot) mesh up? I have a copper notch...near/under the gear and someone marked out a yellow mark on the white gear itself. It's the only thing I want to do right the first time- I don't want to snap the plastic mount.
Great vid! I wish I would have watched it before trying to spend an hour pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to disconnect the Temp knob connector from the unit with no slack on the cable to reach it. :P
what are thos tools that you use to take out the radio and where can i get them?? i thave this car and i wanna take the radio out and put a new one, plz help
I am not sure as i have not got around to make a video on the 91-96 Escort yet. Important Update: Jan 2013 there will be a new richpin channel for all future videos.Richpin06a channel will be solely for all the Saturn lovers out there.Should be a lot of fun so stay tuned.
my friend just asked me to replace his radio with a aftermarket. and all i thought was "I hope its not like the one Rich made a video of. "...... yeah its this car. 40 bucks for a radio kit is CRAZY
i have a 95 ford escort and i am replacing the factory radio. The radio comes out separately from the climate control buttons. I am only having trouble pulling the radio out all the way. i wouldnt think that the wires are too short, are they?
You know i was right next to a few of the older ones and i said na those are to old for anyone to be interested in there removal.I guess i was wrong.I will put that on my list to get done this coming week.
I have serious trouble finding a suitable radio for my ford escort 1.4i (built in 1996). Do you happen to know which radios will fit? Or where I could find a list of radios that would fit?
Help. How did you get the main harness connector disconnected from the passenger's side of the radio? It is attached to the radio at 2:58 but not @ 4:10. Thanks!
Oh no, I think we may have broken my car. I have a 99 and we didn't unplug the heater control cable, then we pulled out the radio and we hear a snap, and now i CANNOT get that thing unplugged! The black tab thing snapped off, so I don't know what to do. Please help
what can i do if the tools that go in the two holes on the side of the radio dont go in alll the way?, i have an 02 and one side clicks in and takes out that side and the other one wont click in
On the aftermarket install kits, how do I know what to connect the black wires ( they come out of the back of the aftermarket install kit) to so that the kit will light up at night?
Okay man a little trouble shooting with radio I can turn all the lights on radio but time radio or ac do not work is it the fuse and if so the fuse when I go to radio fuse on fuse box there is no fuse , so no way to click fuse in place... So is the radio fuse hooked up to another fuse? 1997 ford escort LX
Do u know how to remove a cassette from the player in the 98 ford escort? Mines can't read the casette saying no tape when it's in there and I can't pull out the tape. Hoping I didn't mess the thing more than nessesary...
I followed the first steps to remove the face off but it won’t remove it seems stuck. I think the previous owner swapped out the stock radio and did something wrong. Any ideas how to remove the face :)
How can I discover if a particular after market radio will work in my 97 Ford escort? Will anything work? I want to put a Bluetooth stereo in place of the cassette player/radio so that I can play from my phone using Bluetooth.
Your welcome. Important Update: Jan 2013 there will be a new richpin channel for all future videos.Richpin06a channel will be mainly for all the Saturn lovers out there.Should be a lot of fun so stay tuned
Hey richpin! I've got a question for you. I'm busy installing an aftermarket stereo in my 97 escort and I'm confused why there are two speaker wiring harnesses. my new stereo only has the input for one speaker wire harness and all the stereos I've looked at only have room for one input. Any ideas about how to make it work parts that could work or anything? thanks so much.
I am having a problem with removing the radio unit in my 97 escort. I have been trying to use the removal tools for about an hour with no luck. I have tried putting them in at different lengths and the unit still will not pop off. Any suggestions? Even if it comes to damaging the stock unit I am willing to try anything.
Thank you for the informative video. I was able to install my Bluetooth stereo yesterday. I got everything working, but I have a slight problem. The heater control cable won't lock back into place under the dash. It just slides in on the white "rod" and it is lose and not firmly connected. Therefore it can just slide back out any time. I really cannot figure out how to fix this. I'm not sure if the clips that secure the cable were broken when I took the cable off or if something else is going on. And the video doesn't have a very clear picture of the cable and I cannot really examine what it is supposed to look like compared to mine. I have scoured the internet for information about connecting the cable and I cannot find any info. Please help me out, you may be the only one who can, and I would appreciate it immensely.
It said RaDIO removal ...... Its still attached to the bezel unit. oh well. will figure it out from here. ...I pulled mine without unhooking that heater control thing & a while piece fell out behind the temp control knob. Doesnt look like anything broke though.
Thanks for this video. You have helped me in a number of areas. Radio being installed this week.
Anyone else still doing this, I found if you use a cut coat hanger and insert the cut ends into the four holes this acts like the special tool.
thanks man im going to use your ideas
The hanger workd.just make sure u disconnect the ac heater control by side of brake I almost broke it.
You failed to note that you should move set the temperature knob to its coldest setting so its in sync when you put it back together.
I cannot believe it was that simple! Thank you!!! I destroyed the dash on a junkyard car trying to remove it
I like delsydsoftware started watching because of Saturns but all your videos are awesome. I always look forward to what is next. These radio removal videos I'm sure are very helpful to a lot of people. They make it quite tricky to take out a radio these days.

Great vid! Instructions were concise, and video clearly showed all important steps. Thank you
I started watching your videos for tips on Saturn SL2s, but I find myself watching every other video anyway :)
Great video...wondering what type of radio can I put in to fill in that big ol circle lol.
Great info, I currently own 3, 3rd gen. Escorts. It's a shame Ford no longer makes this model
This man is my super man he gave me everything i needed to know and that was it
How do you remove the temperature controls cause the only one I'm able to remove is the one with the vacuum lines
Thanks for the video I ordered a kit from eBay for 30 buck it has the round face with a cutout for a stereo the harness and the tools to remove seems simple cuz of ur video.thanks again
I was just joking. That's awesome. Thankfully, Ford made it fairly easy (on most vehicles) to remove the radio.
You could put blocks in front and back of the wheels so it will not roll on flat ground of coarse.
Another fine job Rich. Could you give us a good look at your famous panel removal tool as it appears to be home built and extremely handy. Thanks for posting.
What do you think of the Focus.
spot on edumentary, thanks. came out just as you said it would.
There are wires for the fan on the back of this unit.Make sure all the pins in the connectors are not bent and seated correctly.
Awesome video. Excellent detail! Love your accent! You'd argue that I'm the one with the accent ... :)
this will be helpful for me when i go to fix the tape player
You are not stuck you just need a radio dash kit and you can install a aftermarket radio.
thanks man you have saved me money now i can do it myself!
Yes i took a piece of steel bent and cut and welded it to a screwdriver.
Rich, I have thinking about adding an oil bypass filter to my Saturn to achieve 2 micron filtering. The kit is a Top Dog V $190. I have 181,000 miles on my car and figure it could get all the help it can get. Didn't know where else to post this to you so doing it here. What is your opinion on this?

thanks so much! a more detailed (and better lit) video would be nice!, but i'm 'man' enough to believe i can do it properly, thanks to you!
Thanks man, great video! Super informative!
Great vid! I wish I would have watched it before trying to spend an hour pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to disconnect the Temp knob connector from the unit with no slack on the cable to reach it. :P
Thanks Man, very useful tips.
What kind is it? Home made? it's great!
what are thos tools that you use to take out the radio and where can i get them?? i thave this car and i wanna take the radio out and put a new one, plz help

Rich, can you do a radio removal video on a 91-96 Escort?
my friend just asked me to replace his radio with a aftermarket. and all i thought was "I hope its not like the one Rich made a video of. "...... yeah its this car. 40 bucks for a radio kit is CRAZY

You might be able to use a small screwdriver or pick to release that cable.
Can I keep my car in parked? Or must I use the parking/emergency brake? My emergency brake freezes up when I use it and need to get it fixed.
Had me worried there for a minute...lol.If you have any requests don't be afraid to speak up.
You know i was right next to a few of the older ones and i said na those are to old for anyone to be interested in there removal.I guess i was wrong.I will put that on my list to get done this coming week.

Will a picture do.
I don't have those hook things to remove it. Is there any thing else to use to remove radio?

that stereo has entrance auxiliar?
hey rich do I need anything else other tHan whats in this video and the radio I'm installing?
On the aftermarket install kits, how do I know what to connect the black wires ( they come out of the back of the aftermarket install kit) to so that the kit will light up at night?
Hey richpin06. I did this method and my air conditioner stopped working, it stopped blowing air,do you know why?
To get any benefit from these system you need to keep the car a very long time then it would be worth it.
Okay man a little trouble shooting with radio I can turn all the lights on radio but time radio or ac do not work is it the fuse and if so the fuse when I go to radio fuse on fuse box there is no fuse , so no way to click fuse in place... Good stuff rich thanks for sharing.
Hw do you hook a sub woofer to this radio?
You could splice into the rear speakers and use them as high level inputs into the amp.
Should have left the windows open when Sandy went roaring through.
Where do u get those tools from to remove the radio?
+justin robinson Those were cheap ones from walmart.
I though i would do a series of radio removals on different vehicles.
I believe you will need a Stereo Install Dash Kit.
Hello, I removed my stereo to install another one but I was left with the car without lights, how can I fix them, help?
I followed the first steps to remove the face off but it won’t remove it seems stuck. I think the previous owner swapped out the stock radio and did something wrong. Any ideas how to remove the face :)
This is the as a 97 mercury tracer wagon right
The tracer is very similar to the escort.
Can you give us the specific name of the tools needed for this? Thanks
+Venkman83 Factory radio removal tool.
I cannot get the stereo out. The tools keep falling back out and they eont push in anymore
Where can you get that tool to put in the holes??
Would you believe walmart has them.

How can I discover if a particular after market radio will work in my 97 Ford escort? Will anything work? I want to put a Bluetooth stereo in place of the cassette player/radio so that I can play from my phone using Bluetooth.
Crutchfield has a good fit guide for radio and speakers.
Your welcome.

When i run into a problem like this i head over to crutchfield.com because they sell all kinds of adapters to make radios work.

I have tried putting them in at different lengths and the unit still will not pop off. Any suggestions? Even if it comes to damaging the stock unit I am willing to try anything.
If you push the tools in to far they jam the spring retainers that hold the radio in.
Thank you. I actually ended up having to take a coat hanger and make my own removal tool. I have two separate sets that where not working.
how did you get shift lever to low while the battery unplugged
+Thomas Tudela There is a unlock override to the right of the shifter.
+richpin06a did you use a specific tool or will any thin tool work
+Thomas Tudela Most thin tools will work.

I will make a video as soon as i can on how the cable comes off and on but it will not be up till next week.
Sounds good. Can you please let me know or message me when it is online?
Dexter McLaughlin I second his request. Can't get it back on. Heat won't work...it's stuck in air conditioning mode
purepetroleumjellly
I tried to do a video on it last week but could not get enough light under the dash.
richpin06a I managed to get it back on yesterday, thanks for the original video. Cheers!

They are radio removing tools that you can get at walmart.
can you please be a little more specific on what a "tang" is? your hand gets right in the way and I can't figure out what I'm supposed to "push"
my radio won't go back in and stay in ??? do I need those I shaped tools
+Rob Winder The tools are used for removing without them in place the radio should just snap in place.
It said RaDIO removal ...... Its still attached to the bezel unit. oh well. will figure it out from here. ...I pulled mine without unhooking that heater control thing & a while piece fell out behind the temp control knob. Doesnt look like anything broke though.
I am having problems with my Ford zx2 escort using those metal tools and I can't even move they radio out ? 2002.
