Harold Ward was a fairly prolific pulp writer. In the mid-thirties, he wrote several Dr. Death novels under the pseudonym of "Zorro". This was his third story in Weird Tales.
It does end a bit quickly, but I really like this kind of open end. The protagonist chooses to do the right thing and face the consequences, though he may still make his getaway in time if his pursuers are delayed enough by the storm and the avalanche.
