I was an 'off and on' buyer of the GI Joe title and bought this issue when it came out. It carries a fond memory for me, in that I very clearly remember being captivated by the cover because I thought Snake Eyes looked so cool, but then when I picked it up and flipped through it, I immediately got the store manager's attention to ask him if he had looked at it yet, because it appeared that something had gone terribly wrong in either the production or printing process that had resulted in the captions and word balloons not being printed! 😂I'm really happy to see how happy YOU are in acquiring a copy of this issue for yourself, congrats! I love that you once again found a way to integrate some original art content into a video which is primarily focused on comic books, and props to you for doing it so seamlessly. You also need to be commended for all the effort you make in researching and sharing the background information you discover about the subject matter with everyone else. Your scholarship, as usual, is impeccable and is surpassed only by the deep seeded passion you have for our hobby that you freely share with the rest of us. And believe me when I say that we all feel it, and more importantly, appreciate it! Although you've not been able to put out content as often as you and we would like to, I want you to know that the old entertainment industry adage, "Always leave them wanting more!" is true and it definitely applies to YOUR channel. I've been thinking for the better part of a year now, that it's only a matter of time before a large hobby entity offers you a job and takes you away from us for good. They just need to take notice of you and it will surely happen. Our saving grace, as fans of your channel content, may just be that the infrequent content production is the one thing that keeps those entities from taking notice of you in the near term. But for purely altruistic reasons, I hope you DO one day have to announce that you're shutting down this channel because you'll be taking a position with someone somewhere within this hobby. You, Karen, more than anyone I know in this hobby, are certainly deserving of that. 🤗
Thank you, Rubén, for your extremely thoughtful comment. I can just picture you as a young teenager asking to speak to the manager about the strange absence of words in your comic! What did you think of the issue once you realized it was supposed to be silent? To me, original art and comics always go hand in hand. I will always integrate the two where I can since I rarely see it with other channels. The response to my channel has exceeded all of my expectations and continues to do so with each new video. As far as someone in the hobby wanting to give me a job someday…that would be great! These videos aren’t cheap to make! 😅 Thank you for your unending compliments for me and my channel. 🤗

@@KarensPages I didn't have to ask to speak to the manager. The store was quite literally the single car garage attached to the final remaining home on an otherwise commercial street. @@KarensPages To be clear, it wasn't like they set up tables and put long boxes on them inside a garage with tools hanging on nails on the wall. Hi Karen, I have just recently come across your channel and I just wanted to say how much I’ve enjoyed your videos. I don’t see many women on UA-cam talking about buying and collecting comics/original art. As a fellow woman myself who also deeply enjoys these things, it’s a great and refreshing sight to see someone I can relate to who loves these passions as much as I do. It gives me inspiration to do the same. I appreciate it and keep up the great content! 👍🏽
Thank you so much, Lydia. This was one of the nicest comments I have ever received. Thanks for taking the time to check out my channel. It's a lot of fun making videos and interacting with fellow comic and original art collectors like yourself. I hope I will continue to inspire you and I hope to watch your videos someday. ☺
Thank you, ShinKazama! I'm glad you spotted Snake Eyes...I probably should have put a light on him so that he was more visible. 😂 Are you a fan of MRE Steve, too? Thanks for watching! ☺
I got to give a thumbs up for the Cobra shirt alone. Always good to meet a fellow Cobra member. Congrats on the pick-up. I own that issue as well (in raw form as I don't collect slabbed comics) and it is definitely a classic issue. Here's to coming back when you get issue #1!
Thank you, crossbones! Super cool that you own this issue as a raw copy. I definitely intend to pick up #1 at some point. It's crazy to learn that Cobra did not exist when Hasbro wanted to relaunch the action figures. Cobra came about because of Marvel. I can't imagine a GI Joe world without Cobra. 👍
@@KarensPages Yup! Luckily Hasbro's desire to sell as many toys as they could made them realize that antagonists were needed in their search for maximum profits and Cobra was one of the best to ever come out of the 80's! I know I loved them as my childhood toy collection consisted of 80% Cobras and 20% Joes!
@@KarensPages Thanks, Karen! Since I only posted that commission on 2 websites (and you collect slabbed comics), I'm going to assume you saw it on the CGC forums. It'll be a chance to add some more original art to your collection! I know I'm hoping to add a few more to mine (ideally more Marvel Handbook pieces)!
@@crossbones13 Actually, I saw it in your CAF gallery. I'm not really on the CGC boards very often. Yes, I have a CAF, but I no longer use it (and I took a lot of stuff down) because I want to show and discuss my OA collection on my YT channel. And yes, I know that CAF Live is this weekend. I'll probably check it out for a few minutes each morning, but I haven't picked up anything from that event in a few years. Good luck this weekend...hopefully you find some more Marvel Handbook pieces! 👍
I think it's definitely worth picking up. I might pick up a raw copy, too. I want to be able to open it up and look at it from time to time. Thanks for you comment. Good luck on the hunt! 👍
I remember walking to my local 7/11 and saw this issue on the rack ! Iflipped through it and I knew right away in my heart that one day this would be a key book !! Years later I regrettably sold my NM newstand copy . One of the greatest stories ever told !!!
Oh no! Heartbreaking! A NM/M newsstand is worth more than double the direct edition in the same grade. Thank you so much for sharing your story. It's cool that you recognized its greatness from the beginning. Thanks for watching! ☺
I used to own all the GI Joe comics, and unfortunately sold them all in the late 90s. This issue was my favorite, and I regret selling off my collection. Hopefully, I'll buy this issue again. I'm slowly starting to re-collect this series piece by piece. I'm a big fan of the current series, and I hope to get some original art from that series.
Thanks for sharing your story, Mario. It's cool to hear that you are starting to re-collect the GI Joe series. I think it's worth the time to find the comics you love. It's one of my collecting goals to get the entire run of GI Joe ARAH. 😁
Interesting video and congratulations on tagging the book Karen, I must admit that G I Joe is not really in my boat house but I have complete respect for what Larry Hama did on this title towards building the G I Joe legacy his artwork was outstanding.
Thank you so much, CaptainUK! When you read about Larry Hama's contributions to the GI Joe universe, it's pretty amazing. It's so cool to finally get such an iconic book. I hope you are doing well. ☺
Hi Karen! ❤ your glasses. Looking good. I was just about to check on U. It's been awhile. Awesome graded copy of GI Joe.👍 Are you still working on framing that Jack Kirby illustration? I was impressed with the Thor and Silver Surfer statues behind you recreating the cover of Silver Surfer #4. I admire your passion for classic comics and original art. Keep it up. Enjoy the rest of your day. 👋 Steven Romero
Thank you, Steven! It's been a while, but I'm still here. 😉 Yes, I'm still working on framing the Kirby. I look at it every day, though. I hope you have a great day, too! Thank you for your comment. ☺
It was a great time for comics, for sure. I'm a big fan of Silver and Bronze Age comics. It's cool to hear that your older brother still has his copy. Did he buy it off of the newsstand? Thanks for checking out the video and leaving a comment. ☺
@@KarensPages The 80’s were lit🔥 with Talent and Originality. (Good Question!) So my Brothers were all collectors. But the oldest one of course had the biggest and oldest collection. Going back to the 70’s. Where we lived. There was a Hobby Shop that sold Toys, Plastic Models and Comic Books. Which the majority of their collection came from during the 80’s. In the 90’ when I could appreciate more what they were collecting. I came across this Holy Grail Snake Eyes GI Joe Comic Book. Which was in mint condition from what I could remember. And since they all collected. There was actually two of them…They also collected ROM and the NAM Comic Books among soo many other titles in their Collection. Hard to believe how many comic books they had among the three of them.
Great Comic!! G. I. Joe 21 is so special to me because it’s the first comic I ever bought. Thus beginning my comic book collecting/addiction. Nice video.
I don’t have that exact copy anymore but I was lucky to find a few copies at a Con in the late 90’s. In fact I slabbed one when CGC first started. I got a 9.0 on a red label. I’m also thinking of cracking and pressing.
Thanks for subscribing! The comic in the background is a variant cover for Danger Girl/GI Joe #3. The art was done by J Scott Campbell (one of my favorites). Thanks for watching! 👍
Glad I could share the story with you since it's such an amazing story. I don't have #1 yet (just the TPB that contains #1-10), but hopefully in the near future...stay tuned! 😁
Even as a kid, I loved that issue of GI Joe. I wish I still had a copy of it. I used to take my GI Joe comics to school and provide my own style of commentary as to what was going on in the issue! ....and let me tell you, the ladies loved it! at least thats what I thought, I mean who didn't like G.I. Joe???
Yeah. It's pretty crazy how that story ends. I wonder if the comic store owner who sold both OA covers wishes he had held onto the GI Joe 21 cover. Thanks for your comment, Larry. ☺
Another great unboxing video...AND, awesome Baroness cosplay! I was a huge fan of GI Joe growing up but haven't gotten into collecting the books. But after hearing you describe this one, makes me want to for some reason lol. Insane story about the cover art. That collector definitely maximized his profits! Excellent video and homage to an 80's classic cartoon!
Thank you, Brandon! This was a fun video to make, one that I was looking forward to for a while. GI Joe comics are awesome. Definitely check them out! 👍
@KarensPages no problem. I was just basing it off of everyone is obsessed with pressing and cleaning their comics before getting it graded. At least from what I've seen on UA-cam. I don't know much about it myself. I only collect raw comics.
@@robphoenix1182 I know what you mean about the pressing and cleaning obsession. It's cool that you collect raw comics...I'm starting to buy a lot more raw comics as opposed to slabs these days. 👍

Sort of a personal question... Curious as to why your comic book mania didn't start until the '30's. Would you be willing to do a sort of biographical video on this phase of your life. Curious what got you started... If this doesn't appeal, no harm no foul...!!
I did an interview with Rubén DaCollector on his Show and Tell #17 where I told my story about how I started collecting comics and original art. I learn a lot from your channel - thanks! And don't fret about not posting all the time like everybody else tries to do. They're all trying too hard to "make a living" off UA-cam, and only end up puking out diluted, mediocre or clickbait content. Just do your thing - quality over quantity!
I'm so glad you learn a lot from my channel! Thank you for your compliment. I always strive to make the best content I can possibly make...it just comes out slow sometimes. I appreciate you sticking with me! ☺
This is a great issue in regards to the layout. You really can follow the action. Something sorely lacking in modern comics. But every other silent issue, be it by Hama or someone else has been terrible.
That's why #21 will always be a classic. The set of circumstances under which this comic was produced will never be recreated. Thanks for your comment! I totally agree about the layouts. 👍
Nice. Not sure if i heard you mention this but Stormshadow has a silent issue as a sequel, #42. Also njce to see someone who isnt a 9.8 snob lol. I like 9.8's as much as the next person but the collecting part should be what brings joy, not CGC's subjective and varying number
I didn't mention the follow up silent issue in my video, but did you mean GI Joe #85? Yeah, I like 9.8 books like anyone else, but I tend to collect older comics, so I end up with a wider grade range. Plus, this 9.2 looks super awesome in person. Thanks for checking out the video. 👍
I still play gi joe with my figures cause it just won’t go out of style so anyone in provo Utah wanna come over and be cobra command ? And don’t even try to take my snake eyes HES NOT IN COBRA COMMAND AND YOU KNOW IT!!! Ok cool ! And my tree house is yours to sleep in so let’s get crazy with this play date. Sorry ya gotta be over 30 yo play cause I’ve run into some issues beforehand and I know better now and you know what they say “KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE!!” The other half is keeping your hands to yourself...
The 9.2 is the grade that CGC assigned to this particular comic book. A 9.2 is considered a “near mint-“ and most comics in this grade typically exhibit an accumulation of several tiny flaws (according to the Official CGC Guide to Grading Comics).
Placing a comicbook into a hard plastic frame - graded by "experts" and never to be opened again - completely misses the point of collecting/reading comics. F*ck the CGC. And f*ck what it's done to younger, easily-influenced "collectors."
Bro, did you actually watch the videos on her channel? You should check out the last two videos she posted before this one if you want to know what type of "collector" she is. How many other YT channels out there make a research video about WW2 Japanese internment camps and solving an incorrect story in comics that existed for decades?
"Never to be opened again" is an assumption. I mentioned in my video that I want to crack and press out the bends in my GI Joe #21 someday. While I enjoy slabbed comics and display them, most of my comic collection is raw. Some of my favorite things to buy are groups of raw comics, since they usually offer the best deals. I'll have unboxing videos of raw comics (including collections) in the near future; although, I have very limited time to make videos these days.
Thanks for letting me know. I was having issues with UA-cam myself. I had to switch from Safari to Chrome. Hopefully, you will be able to subscribe at some point. Thanks for checking out the video. I really appreciate it! 👍

Thank you so much, CJ Design! It's cool to be able to share the backstory to this comic with you. I'm really excited for my next unboxing...it's going to be a banger. I always appreciate your support. ☺

Awesome video! I liked that you sneaked in Snakes Eyes rappelling down your shelf (even before the outtakes). Great tribute to MRE Steve as well.
Thank you, ShinKazama! I'm glad you spotted Snake Eyes...I probably should have put a light on him so that he was more visible. 😂 Are you a fan of MRE Steve, too? Thanks for watching! ☺
@@KarensPages Of course! MRE Steve is the man, the myth, AND the legend.
@@ShinKazama88 Yes he is! 🤩
@@crossbones13 Why doesn't that surprise me? 🤣 Your Doug Gray ink wash commission is really awesome. Congratulations! 👍
@@KarensPages Thanks, Karen! Since I only posted that commission on 2 websites (and you collect slabbed comics), I'm going to assume you saw it on the CGC forums. Do you have a gallery on the Comic Art Fans website? Do you know that they are having their CAF Live event happening this weekend (5/11-5/12)?
Your book definitely backed up the title of this video. Excellent Issue and hunting for one myself.

People were soo creative in the 80’s. My older Brother has that Book somewhere in the house? It wasn’t sold off. 👍

I don’t have that exact copy anymore but I was lucky to find a few copies at a Con in the late 90’s. In fact I slabbed one when CGC first started. I got a 9.0 on a red label. I’m also thinking of cracking and pressing.

It is a newer case, but I doubt the book has been pressed yet (too many finger bends near the center of the book). Thanks for your comment! ☺

Sort of a personal question... Curious as to why your comic book mania didn't start until the '30's. Would you be willing to do a sort of biographical video on this phase of your life. Curious what got you started... If this doesn't appeal, no harm no foul...!!

I bought that one off the rack! Now I’m bummed that I traded it away.

Please, what the meaning the number 9,2 in the left upside?
The 9.2 is the grade that CGC assigned to this particular comic book. A 9.2 is considered a “near mint-“ and most comics in this grade typically exhibit an accumulation of several tiny flaws (according to the Official CGC Guide to Grading Comics).

. -..- .- -.-. - .-.. -.--
Placing a comicbook into a hard plastic frame - graded by "experts" and never to be opened again - completely misses the point of collecting/reading comics.
