The US Army executioner at the time John Clarence Woods was an inept butcher who lied about his experience as a hangman before joining the army. He botched many executions using the wrong drop. He was known to be a drunk.

They rejoiced in the nation starving to death, they said it was a good way of clearing the land of the Irish.

Pierrepoint always placed the condemned on the trapdoor before putting on the hood and pulling the lever. He wrote about it himself.
