Make a bunch of them dudes up and throw em the freezer and theyd last a long long time. I love watchin u blackie. U and Dave Canterbary are my 2 favorire woodsmen. Ive learned so much from u guys that ill be forever grateful!
I carry 2 military canteens and canteen cups with one canteen stove. I like to have one for food and 1 for drink. Especially in the mornings for breakfast and coffee.
I have made up oatmeal with brown sugar and dehydrated milk in this concept before, using ziplocks. Any way to pre-prepare a meal is time and effort saved in the field. Carrying dry foods that are ready when hydrated makes things lighter and usually more compact. I transfer much of the "woods" part of woodcraft to motorcycle adventures. From camp meals to hammocks and camp site, weight and size considerations to quick, clean, and easy, they share a lot. As always, thank you for another great video.
👍👍👍 .. I do my Oatmeal the same way .. the regular Oatmeal, not the instant stuff. Home oven-dehydrated Banana (it keeps a long time in the freezer) adds to the flavour and taste. The 5-8 minutes that it takes the oats to cook is time well spent stirring the pot to prevent burning and 'mulling' .. 'mulling' is good 😊. I do not use the instant freeze-dried meals .. my budget does not stretch that far. Correct .. there are plenty cheaper and tastier alternatives out there if one takes the trouble.
Try the half & half singles they don't have to be refrigerated. I use 2 poured over my oatmeal. Cut up fruit leathers cooked in the oatmeal are good too.
Ingenious idea, trail food and MRE's are fairly expensive, so DIY them saves a lot of money and you can put them together to your own liking. To get equal shares I prefer taking a spoon and deal it out from the bowl instead of eyeballing it. Most times I add some spices too, because I don't like the way they come. Important tip to put it in aluminium foil for other uses like cooking veggies, meat or fish in the coals.
Gotta say at the end of a day of hiking that whole bag of taters is on the menu. Plus whatever I can figure out to toss in. Seriously, that's a slick system.
Blackie, Thanks for sharing this great tips and tricks on the bush pot cooking for one , and don't forget the Black eyed peas and sweet pickle relish ,that's if Carl is cooking. Thanks Again. Tim L.
Some great tips, Blackie! I've been using individual food packets (such as the SPAM, Chicken of the Sea Tuna, and Great Value singles) for several years. Instead of foil, try wrapping portions in wax paper and binding the packet with a small rubber band or piece of painter's tape. If you have a campfire, you can eliminate that much rubbish from your carry-out.
Works for me brother! Jason Howes impressed me by cooking beans in a bushpot on a tripod. He had beans and rice pre-measured. Also a separate spice bag. They were delicious. Be well good brother!
I have an old grease pot that I like. It’s paid for and works. I like packages of red beans and rice. And those side dishes by Koor. Downside it this pot doesn’t have a bail for hanging over a fire, but it’s generally no problem to place it close to the fire. I love your ideas, it gets me going!
Awesome video Blackie! Reminds me of my hunting lunch, 2min noodles, tuna packet, and 3slices of "processed cheese" slices, smokey cheese flavour of course. But potato and gravy is the definition of easiest quick feed in the field
Good content Blackie, I used this technique while deer hunting for years, until the wife got a freeze dryer. Now I take homemade freeze dried meals packaged in a size that works for me. That allows me to stay in the field longer.
I've never tried mashed potatoes but I'd like to try, it looks like it's a lot faster and tasty on the trail. 'Dried Vegetable Soup Mix ' is also cheap and makes a healthy addon, mix it with beef jerky or dry smoked pork sausage + pasta/ buckwheat/ rice for the dinnerosupper. + instant soup mix for taste if needed.
I’ve taken a small portion of those potatoes and added them to ramen noodles. Makes a pretty hardy meal and plenty of carbs to fuel up during a long hike
Great tips, Blackie. I especially like how you put the water measurements on the spoon. What a great idea! I've been wondering how to make measuring marks for my stainless steel cooking containers that is simple. Now I don't have to worry about that at alll if I mark a wooden spoon. Thanks! 👍
That’s an excellent idea Blackie, especially with the instant Gravey added. In the 1960’s the New Zealand deer hunters used to do something similar (minus the gravey) but added instant dehydrated peas (probably our English heritage! ). Your idea is a great way to save money too, as you mentioned MRE and preprepared meals are fairly expensive. Thanks 🇺🇸 🇳🇿
I used to do this all the time doing Civil War encampments, and although I was never in the scouts, but my sons were same deal applied. Always good eats no matter what! The ones I felt sorry for was the dads and their kids, kids wanted to be in scouts cause their friends were and the dads who didn't know how to cook cause the wife did all the cooking? Saved a few scouts and dads from starving at meal time! Always brought extra and stashed it away.
I just did this with some bear creek chili mix, no tomato sauce. Potato s are a little different rule. But other stuff. You add your dry ingredients. That your going to cook and only add enough water to barely cover. Slow cook if its a tad wet. Take the lid off and let it steam off
Some good ideas I will have to try. My favourite instant mashed potatoes recipe so far is from some backpackers recipe book. Called "sunrise spuds", it is mashed potatoes, shredded cheese and pre-cooked meat chunks (bacon bits, salami, pepperoni, hamburger, whatever). With right amount of cheese and bacon it is almost a heart attack in a sack (you can almost feel your heart working harder but it is delicious. Just do all things in moderation. Next time I may try it with the gravy mix
Dave Cantebury has a video on the same idea he also mentioned Amazon has Dehydrated Milk Powder and Dehydrated Butter which can be used to mix into your packages. Quart Size Sip Locks are handy for this to keep the Food Dry in the Weather.
The missus makes her spud flakes using Chicken broth..fresh chive 'n parsley chops. (butter) ~ Ingredients in powdered gravy gives me the Willies a bit more than home made. tips me hat BT ~
Hey Blackie- Good tips here for meal preparation- I really like the idea of making measuring marks on the eating utensil. Im going to steal this idea from you, if you dont mind. Thanks for the videos and tips you give. Be safe out there-
Great stuff Sir! I'm always pondering and experimenting with different types of home-made MREs and making my own ration packs up with loose components purchased cheaper than a full 24 hour ration pack would cost. Often with a bit of a homage to the old school British Army ''compo'' rat packs we used back in the day before they introduced retort pouch meals. I have some mylar pouches which I can use to decant tinned (canned) meal components into for lightness, compactness and ease of reheating in the field, I generally use a stainless canteen cup, GI style, but Dutch Army issue. For rice sides I buy microwaveable pouches of ready cooked rice with flavouring and other ingredients e.g. egg fried rice, very cheap from German discount supermarkets (we have Lidl here but maybe you in the US can find them in Aldi), again these can easily be reheated in the pouch, in a canteen cup.
Blackie I love the spoon measuring stick....on the amount of water though it would be a half of a cup per pack not a quarter unless you have a reason for that amount and you didn't share.
Just another idea I've used in the past. I got a fairly big summer sausage from Costco and (with sterilized utensils and gloved hands) sliced the sausage up into single servings then vacuumed sealed. You can use this in place of the spam when cooking. Additionally, no added salt is needed. Also, can someone spell out what Blackie said where he got the spoon? I couldn't quit catch what he was saying. Thanks.
yes what i ment to say was in some cases you may want to divide up large bulk foods into table spoons so say i got one of the prepper 5 gal buckets full of instant potatoes instead of pouring it out and cutting the pile in half again and again you may wont to figure out say 5 tablespoons worth equal a single serving for you..thats why the table spoon measuring set
I spun back for kicks. Actually he didn't say, but you can mark any spoon, even metal. Metal may just take a more careful approach, scribe with a screw bit punch. Even though I use a Toaks folding spoon, my canteen kit holds a bamboo spatula/spoon. And my packpack has a very shallow silicone spoon-like that's used as a spatula/ingredients folder-mixer. Scrape walls of pots without the noise, hits all corners and a wooden handle... ..which is one of five piece set of silicone cook worthy utensils. ~ Good idea of the markings, but that would take one marked something for each pot. Just the same, it would be good for my 2qt. Zebra pot. (-:
👁👁 Blackie, I appreciate your tips...general like this one, the Silver Wolves (which I am one), and whatever other tips you give. I never got to be in Girl Scouts or anything similar, so any tips are truly welcome. Thanks. I wish I could afford to come to training camps, but that just isn't possible. So I glean what I can here.
My potatoes say 1/4 cup dry so I just measure in a measuring cup and place in a snack bag.. Buckwheat is also the ultimate survival grain and can live a week on a pound of the stuff…
It's amazing that you are reviewing the new Pathfinder pot more than Pathfinder is. Several questions I've asked and can't get a reply. I want to know how many screw top sundry tins will fit in this pot, and what size tins ? I also want to know how the Pathfinder bottle fits in this pot ? Thanks for the video, very informative!
64 oz bottle doesn’t fit ,, however the 25 oz cup will fit inside and of course the regular water bottle fits in that cup ,, so effectively pot cup and single wall water bottle 40 oz size could be a set up for cooking .. hope this helps
Blackie, when I was in school,2 cups divided by 4,was a half cup..lol.. love all your videos!
Took the words out of my mouth.
I caught that too.
Plus the ¼ cup needed for the gravey, so he needs ¾ cups of water.. lol
Carpal tunnel size foil meals
Yeah a 1/4 C of mashed potatoes is nothing. 😂 This is as bad as his explanation of how hail is formed.
I bet those camp taters would be good with some jerky added to the packets.
I love the simplicity of this, especially nowadays when everyone trys to reinvent the wheel..old ways 100%
thanks for watching

Hi Blackie.. Some great ideas - thank you for sharing. Stya safe. ATB. Nigel.
Add potatoes to Ramen. It's called a Ramen bomb, very popular on the AT.
Great tip to mark the spoon. Thanks blacky
Good stuff, thanks my friend! Regards and best to you and yours, Pink.
the holy grail!

For measurements I use a stainless coffee scoop. It is an 1/8 cup. Half that is a tablespoon. It is fairly light weight and very useful.

Thanks for that.

I don't eat nothin without grindings of black pepper rosemary and bay leaves and chef salts. Mac n cheese would do nice.
Nice

What was her motivation for getting the dryer? 😉
Great tips Blackie, thank you. All these years and I never thought about mixing dehydrated mashed potatoes and gravy together.
The 8in. Skillet compliments that bushpot when you feel like doing some fancy cooking
I've never tried mashed potatoes but I'd like to try, it looks like it's a lot faster and tasty on the trail.

Just make sure if you have 32oz and 64oz bushpots you you measure different spoons and don't get them mixed up.
Hi Blackie, greeting from Australia 🇦🇺. Thank you for your time to make these videos.

I do this exact same thing but i add a 10oz can of chicken breast with it 👌🏼
Thanks Blackie
Kitchen scale and vacuum sealer are great tools for this sort of thing.
Enjoy the cooking aspects always - great video.
Some good ideas I will have to try.

Good idea of dividing into portions and preparing for traveling
Great idea 👍
Hi Blackie , greetings from Australia , thank you for your time to make these videos .
K...and where did the lil' collapsible cup come from. It looks very handy.
Good thinkin' on the spoon level indicator... I like it
Dave Cantebury has a video on the same idea he also mentioned Amazon has Dehydrated Milk Powder and Dehydrated Butter which can be used to mix into your packages. Quart Size Sip Locks are handy for this to keep the Food Dry in the Weather.
I'm one of those that dont use a canteen set.
Its interesting to see how other people do stuff!
Thanks for the ideas and posting

tips me hat BT ~
1 package of potatoes + 1 pack of gravy = 1 serving..!! 🤠
Also, vacuum sealers work great for this type of portioning.. keep up the great work blackie
@keithricketts4867 the thing that foil has over vacuum sealing is as Blackie said, you can use it again for meat and such while in the field.

I found a collapsible uco cup that has measurements also collapsible measuring spoons
Good stuff Blackie 🤠
Good video Blackie , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Hi Blackie want to hear more about hog and hominy
Good stuff blackie, ty sir…
Good video! Love the spoon measuring mark idea. Any one got an idea what cup he is on about that the spoon came with?
Thanks for the tip Blackie
Awesome ! 👌 THANKS. ...Alan in 🇨🇱
I have taken soup starter minestrone, it works well with squirrel also turtle meat.
Thank you for the video.
Great video thanks for sharing
Blackie I love the spoon measuring stick....on the amount of water though it would be a half of a cup per pack not a quarter unless you have a reason for that amount and you didn't share.
😃👍👍💚
Wish I had scout leaders like that. In the early 60's the one's we had were mostly incompetent. Wonder what you brought on a primitive camp?
Got to love your accent!
sounds good
Great information, I have their 48 oz cup but may get this also. Great thing is Dave dropped prices on alot of his things yesterday
i saw that

Canned meats are great
That small Wilda Fold-a-Cup holds 1/2 cup folded up, and 1 cup unfolded (filled to the brim).
Add that chili to the potatoes.
She is going to kill me when yet another bushpot arrives in the mail. 😂
LOL, yeah, I'm waiting on one and some of the pantry tins.
Where can you find that pot? I cant seem to find it.
When I was in the Army, we would experiment around with similar things.
My potatoes say 1/4 cup dry so I just measure in a measuring cup and place in a snack bag.. Buckwheat is also the ultimate survival grain and can live a week on a pound of the stuff…
Blackie breaking bad 😂😂
Made me hungry man

Good idea except 2 cups divided by 4 is a 1/2 cup
Aaaaaaand now, I'm hungry...
1/2 cup.
2 cups to whole pack u done 4 portions would be half cup to each portion
1 quarter of 2 cups is a half a cup
👆
Um. 2 cups divided by 4 is 1/2 cup per serving. Not 1/4 cup.
Actually I think you want a half cup of water. You said the whole package requires 2cups of water a quarter of 2 cups is a half cup
Too bad I can only like it once...
👁👁 Can anyone explain to me why all my comments show up 2 times? It looks like I'm doing that on purpose. But I'm not.
zip locks would be quicker
I thought you were going to do some real cooking...
