Basically, he fell in love with her even though she didnt like him not realising the fact that she really needed him in his life. After all of the struggles he went through trying to get her to like him, he decided to just give up and stop talking to her completely. When he was gone, she saw him in everything she did. That's where she finally realised she loved him and saw how important he was in her life. She tried getting him back by telling him that she really needed him in her life. The problem is, he thinks that she is simply just trying to stop him from getting his feelings hurt. Makes me wonder if Marshmello intentionally wrote these songs to tell a heartbreaking story. 🤔
