    Can't wait to see this loco run again and maybe the 1218 to beautiful locomotives that can never be duplicated long live the new and former NS steam program and the Claytor brothers who ran the program may they never be forgotten

      Andrew Bowe So far, the steam program at this point has four operational steamers, N&W #611 (recently did a test run yesterday), Southern #4501 and #630 and Nickel Plate #765. There may be plans to use U.S. Army 2-8-0 #610, N&W #1218 and a Y class, and possibly S&A #750, A&WP #290, and C&O #2716.

    Some people think steaming this thing down was the end of a era. To a extent, they were right. However, I have to say, seeing the work being put back into this piece of history is impressive. I look forward to 611 returning to steam!

      I can't wait either. I wasn't even alive when the NS had their first steam program. Now the 611 will come back and put on a show for the new generation of railfans, including myself.

      MrRailroadrunner #611 is back up and running. They have better liability so there won't be anymore accidents like the Great Dismal Swamp. However, since 1994, the only railroad that does not allow the operation or use of steam excursions on their trackage is CSX.

    • @sooline3854
      @sooline3854 9 років тому +1

      Erich Diebold I hope that CSX's board removes the sticks that are up their asses and lets steam run someday.

    You can see Jack Taylor(assistant road foreman of NS steam to Bob Saxtan) walking with his pipe as 611 was backing up and turning on the wye in Front Royal.

    That's the Whistle of Big boy 4014.

    • @yankinga
      @yankinga  Рік тому +1

      No, it is the exact same model whistle carried on all the Js and also the K class Mountains of the N&W, an off-the-shelf Hancock Long Bell Three-Chime, one of the most common whistles of the late steam era. All 175 of Union Pacific's big three classes, the Big Boys, Challengers and 800s carried that same model. So did the SP's Daylight engines. Probably a thousand or more engines of many different railroads wore the same model whistle.

    that's the whistle of the big boy 4014.

    • @yankinga
      @yankinga  3 роки тому +3

      It's the same model, not the same whistle. It's called a Hancock long-bell three chime and was very common in the late steam era. It could handle steam pressures higher than 250 PSI without overblowing and squealing. 4014, 844, 4449, 611 and many other locomotives carried that model of whistle.
