ABOUT NBC10 PHILADELPHIA
NBC10 is the Philadelphia region's most trusted source for breaking news, exclusive local stories, in-depth investigations and most accurate weather.
It's a real shame because someone out there recognized that boy and said nothing.
For sure!
He must've been a very neglected prisoner in his household for not even a physician, teacher, classmate or neighbor to come forward. The world can be so unfair and cruel!
Can't wait to hear the updates!
Humans are gross, this is crazy
I’m halfway hoping that if he had any relatives that were adults during this time and are still alive, their names get released as well and they pay for what they did somehow. It should be a crime to withhold this closure.
So kids that go missing across state lines or in dense cities especially where there’s highways to interstate routes have a hard time being reunited with out of area parents. That goes for any era.
Especially in pre-internet or early internet years (until around 2010) there weren’t networks that contained mass amounts of people and their parents vigilant on the same website. Constant posts/awareness/photos/gps etc but also you can easily go out of city or state lines with your search you’re not stapling flyers to every pole you find you’re sending them farther out to people wanting to look at flyers.
It’s why for awhile milk cartons were the main source because even if you didn’t read the newspaper in the morning a wider demographic of people would be drinking milk at varying hours of the day/night and keeping that carton for longer durations then the newspaper/kindling. (This was during a higher industrialization of milk based products you went from glass bottles to printable cartons) there also was an intensity from parents to know what happens to another persons kid and kids reflects that someone that’s their age or look like them can’t be found.
Before milk cartons you had newspapers which depending upon the paper could be bought/sold in multiple cities or only locally publish/produced. And your demographic for people to not only buy the paper but read the missing sections is really a slim portion of the entire population. A majority of the demographic being working men who may be busy with other things then search parties.
When radio was invented and news was broadcasted over the radio to multiple states or nationwide, Is when sometimes the stories got sensationalized and published nationwide but it was rare instances and involved nearly everyone from the president and government officials from the CIA stepping in. This wasn’t an often thing to see tho and why when it happened turned smaller events into nationwide issues/scandals. (Just look at how Cave Excavator Floyd Collins was made infamous)
Today with as much media as we consume we still see the highest members of society involved yet more frequently in inter-state issues. It’s easy to get a governor from 8 states away to comment on a missing persons case not related to their state whatsoever raises it was tragic and inter-state, because everyone’s updated constantly.
Before if you were to ask another sheriffs department 4 states away they might not even know what you were talking about. If you drove faster to them then the news could travel via paper. Media sharing is different now and with better methods to get and preserve dna evidence along with connect it to wider networks it’s no wonder so many cold cases are finally being solved

Poor little guy was loved more in death by strangers than he was in life by his family.

Prominent family makes me think of well known, but also possibly rich.
@@DR-mq1vn The Boy In The Box was probably brought into the world by a teenage girl who didn't wanna raise him, so she and her boyfriend (or whoever got her pregnant) sold him to a woman named M. M's evil abusive mother starved the poor baby and when he got sick, he was slammed on the ground multiple times just for throwing up in the bathtub. After the kid died, the old lady stuffed his dead body into a box that once contained a bassinet.
Probably why they are delaying in releasing the name
As soon as they found out who the little boy was a detective should've been at that prominent families home knocking on their door.
Prob Joe Biden, like son like father.
My mom cried over this child when he was discovered. My parents had tried for years to have children. She grieved for him.
UPDATE: As many of you know, this child’s name has been discovered. He is Joseph Augustus Zarelli, and he was born January 13, 1953. His body was found in the cold February of 1957.
While I’m so glad that we can finally remember the boy for who he really was, it’s so sad that not a single person reported him missing nor came forward to identify him.
That’s what I’m thinking. How did no one come forward saying that their 6 year olds son went missing?
@@PrincessLioness because they probably killed him. Parents kill kids all the time. And this "prominent" family probably had enough money to keep it quiet. Tell anyone who asked that they sent him to boarding school or to a relative in another state. A lot easier to hide crimes back in 1957.
Most likely the family didn't report a missing because they're the ones that killed him.
I’m thinking no one came forward to identify him because as the reporter said he came from a prominent family. His death was a secret for everyone involved and I guess thought with money and prominence they would never be caught😡
Well if the ‘family’ never reported a missing child that is already an indication. Shameful. RIP little boy.
I have a feeling he might be illegitimate, family wanted to keep him a secret.
I have a feeling it was the other "i" word the family wanted hushed up: incest.
I’m so happy this angel has a name. It’s very sad those who helped over the yrs can’t be here to hear the good news. RIP angel. You will never be forgotten ❤

I'm glad the little guy gets his name back soon. I'm sure his killer has lived many lives over as a cockroach, he/she was a monster in this one.
He was never forgotten and never will.
While they know who he is now, determining who killed him may never be known.
@@ericsierra-franco7802 The person who killed him was an older lady. She was the mother of a woman only known as M. M purchased the little boy from his parents because his biological mother must have only been a teenage girl at the time. The boy was punished for throwing up in the bathtub. The old lady repeatedly slammed the poor kid on the ground until he was dead. Then she stuffed his dead body in a box that once contained a bassinet.
I figured we find out who he is just from DNA searches (Ancestry, 23 & me).. I always figured someone knew who he was but stayed silent. And how do you know this?
@@ericsierra-franco7802 It said it on Wikipedia.
I imagine after all these years that whatever monster beat this child to death and tossed him away like garbage is long dead. However, giving this little boy his name back is what really matters at this time. The people in this area clearly have held great love in their hearts for this child. Hopefully that love has helped his sweet little soul to Rest In Peace. ❤
Such a PoS probably ended up in prison or killed by another PoS person anyway.
I could not have said that better myself that is so heartbreaking, his family knows who he is and won't even give him respect in death
exactly. along with their acquaintances in law enforcement who let them walk free. that's why investigators now have the freedom to solve it. because nothing can be done.
@@ShiggyMiyamo doubt it. prominent local family beats their child to death, and employs connections to walk free doesn't say imply a lot of risk ever moved in their direction.
Perhaps they are still alive though. Plenty of people born in the 20's and 30's are alive now.
Anyone from his “prominent” family that is still alive to remember him, will probably deny knowing about him or his death. If it was a large family, many must have known about his identity. It’s sickening to think of all the people who knew this little boys name and stayed silent. I’m glad he might finally get some justice. I hope other nameless children like him with cold cases will continue to be identified through advancements in technology.
Apparently there was a woman who came into the police and claimed that she knew the boy as he was adopted by her mother. but the mother was so abusive towards the boy. unfortunately the authorities dismissed the woman's claim because they found out she came from mental institution despite the fact that there was a part where the woman said that her mother fed the boy baked beans which is coincidentally similar to what they found on the boy's digestive system.
@@lahasainaypayaso3386That woman actually told people treating her while she was hospitalized her story about the boy. I believe they relayed the info to the police, and the police interviewed her. I’ve read a lot of conflicting information about what the result was, three different conflicting accounts: the cops determined her information proved to be 100% false, possibly the result of a woman who had a severe mental illness; some but not all of the information matched the facts of the case so that police couldn't do much with the info, and the information was very credible and matched facts in the case only someone with knowledge of the boy and his murder would know (like the stomach contents you mentioned.) I’m very curious to know if she was telling the truth all along.
true but anyone who remembered would probably be dead or very very old. the boy would be 71 now so the people who did that to him (assuming his parents) must be 91+ at least. and you wouldn't go telling everyone in your family "yeah we beat and killed our son" so most likely no one alive knows about him.
Prominent families all over that county are hiring their lawyers.
If this kid's identity actually turns out to be linked to that 'M' woman's story that was blown off, I'm going to be livid.
I hope that if she was telling the truth, she’s vindicated. It’s a shame that she is no longer alive to see him get his name back. If my mom made me assist in burying a body of a child whom she beat and murdered, I’d probably have long lasting mental health issues as well. Take the case of Mitchelle Blair. She had her children assist him putting her two youngest children, whom she tortured, beat and killed, in a freezer. The surviving children then had to live in the house with the freezer, prominently displayed, knowing that their brother and sister were dead and frozen inside. From what I’ve heard, both surviving children are thriving HOWEVER, I’m sure that they need/will need INTENSIVE and ongoing therapy to make sure they remain mentally healthy but do you ever really get over something like that? And this was in the 2010s, when M was going through this in the 1950s and 60s, I’m sure mental health was not something that was given any respect or attention. Especially for women. I’m not surprised that most people just dismissed her but if she was telling the truth, I hope that she’s vindicated. If not, it still is a testament to how mental health and treatment for mental illness was such a discarded issue and non-issue back in those days and while we’ve come a very long way since then, we still have light years to go when it comes to diagnosing and treating those with mental health issues.
M...who
I always thought she was being pretty honest
@@jennifermyers66 there was lady dubbed “M” though I’ve seen her called Mary or Martha but she claimed that her mother bought the boy and his name was Jonathan and she was abusing the boy and the boy had vomited which is what led to the mother basically beating him to death. She also said she remembered him eating beans which was verified that the boys last meal was beans. But she gave a lot of information that was consistent with what police found. I believe some of the things she said wasn’t released by police or investigators. Her story was that the boy was kept in the basement and I remember it being alluded to that he had some kind of developmental delay/disability (tho I could be wrong) which it could explain why he may have been sold or given away and why he was beaten when “throwing a tantrum” which was more related to a Disability rather than him being unruly. The neighbors dismissed M’s claims saying that she had mental health issues and that they never saw a boy. But either they didn’t because the boy was hidden and kept in the basement OR they just didn’t want to be involved and may have heard or suspected things and just told themselves it wasn’t true. Maybe they knew the family or didn’t want to assist in ruining their reputation so why not cast doubt on M since she had mental health issues. But according to M, the mother made her assist in the boys disposal and they even said a man drove by and her mom had her stand in front of the license plate which a guy who drove by did confirm. If my mom had me assist in burying a child they murdered, I’d be effed up in the head to. Idk if M was telling the truth but Joseph is awfully close to Jonathan. Maybe she mistook it and it was Joseph and she misremembered it as Jonathan. I’m not sure but when they said his name was Joseph, I immediately thought about M.
Remember that’s it’s not the child’s fault. He didn’t ask to be brought into this world.😢Love your children.
From a prominent family eh? It's kind of weird that such a family wouldn't have noticed a missing child.
Rich people get away with anything
Not if they killed him.

Indeed they do. As soon as I heard he came from an "affluent family" the "Changeling" immediately came to mind. Another interesting mystery is JonBenet Ramsey's murder. An affluent family as well, and that case that will possibly never be solved as well. Rich people has been getting away with murder forever. One of the " Kennedy's" did so has Natalie Woods husband "Robert Wagner" and "Robert Blake".
Illegitimate child of a rich man probably. Hidden away, neglected & ultimately killed to protect the family’s name & reputation.
Really. Darn suspicious.
It hurt so bad seeing him in that little box😢 People whose harming kids should punish severely. RIP

This brought me to tears. My dad told me about this case and it broke my heart. For someone to be so cruel and heartless to a child is pure evil. I wish his time here on earth was better than what he had. Even though we didn’t know him, our hearts are with him.
Back then in the 50s and 60s our parents experienced atrocities that wont ever be talked about because most people have an innate response to defending their family. My grandmother was absolutely evil and im the only one in the family brave enough to say that. She beat all her children to a pulp. She used switches, she would beat them unannounced in the middle of the night with objects. She would make them perform on her. She also was a Pentecostal revival evangelist, and absolute NUTBALL. Holding poisoness snakes, pulling all her children out of school before 6th grade to make them part of her circus act for jesus. When 16 she forced them to get jobs and hand over their entire check to her. She emotionally, physically, and sexually abused them and im HAPPY she died at the age 42, she was a demon, she should of died sooner. It is a miracle that my aunts, uncles, and dad made it alive into their adulthood. My point in all this, is i think its closer to home than conspiracies. I wish you the best in finding that boys name. Back then they really didnt get the consequences of being evil.
My grandmother was like that to my aunts, but not my father.
my great great grandmother was like that and beat my great-grandmother where she ended up in the hospital multiple times as a child and back then the government didn't do anything.
No consequences?Like today.People who do this have no connection to Jesus.Remember, 65million unborn baby killings since 1970.
@@anthonycaruso8443 arguably worse back then because no internet. But yeah even still today
Yes, terrible as this story of yours was to read, I know it was not uncommon. Children were considered 'property'. You could do what you pleased with them. This included terrible punishment. A good friend of ours was beaten so severely as a child that her head and scalp bled. When the police removed Norma from the house, and took her to the nuns, they gently fed and bathed her. And sat up while she slept. She never forgot her alcoholic father's cruelty..or the nun's great kindness. And in fact they sent her back to that same home and father.
This is amazing. A miracle. This case has never left my mind. He deserves a name and justice. I can’t believe no one reported him missing. I have sons and this story has always upset me. 😡😢I would never throw my boys away. Too bad the person that did this is probably dead!!

@@BeBooBoopBeepBeep There is no real justice that's going to occur. Since this is likely a family with money, even if they're alive, they'd be on the verge of death from old age, and would have a lawyer they were unfit to stand trial anyway. Where did you read that? The police surely would have followed that lead if it were true, and the "guy" would have been questioned.
That story is true I’ve read it before. This was quite a few years ago so I’m paraphrasing here. There was a woman years later that said her mother was responsible, they had got the boy from another family, the mother would beat and sexually assault the boy and also she said he had special needs. They said prominent, not affluent, but we'll see.
@@learobinson4450 : If the family wouldn't claim the child, then someone else claimed him and raised him for six years.
300books. His mother & her family perhaps but when they realized the father wouldn’t acknowledge him & give them money they got rid of him. At the time bastard children were a stain on both parents so I can see the mother & her family being abusive & then getting rid of him when he became a burden that wasn’t going to pay off.
Or maybe he was given over to “foster” parents who were paid to look after him but if the money stopped coming then he was killed & discarded.
Pure speculation, of course, but it would explain how a prominent family would not report their missing child or claim his body when he was found.
One of the stories I listened to many years back was from a woman that said her mother took the boy. (can remember if she bought him or the family just gave him away). Oh my god this case has never left my mind. For years like so many other the people in the comments . This hurt my heart. I hope that they can finally give this poor little boy his name .And finally he can be at pace. And for the detectives that have finally found some answers for this little boy I guess they never gave up on him either Thank you for helping him thank you for helping us 🙏💜
The kindness of the professionals that worked on this case over the years helped a lot 🙏🙏🙏 hopefully no child goes through this ever again.
I glad that he is finally identified! It's been long overdue and now we can call him by his actual name!
I hope he gets a new funeral with his name. I’m so glad to here about this little Angel now having a identity❤️🙏🏼
Great! Now can you identify the children who are currently being abused as this child was 60 years ago?
Exactly. Make the connection people. This was not a one-time event, we see cases daily of this level of abuse against children. Time to stop those from harming children.
His father and mother know what happened. 😒 They probably did it. Shame on those that knew something and said nothing. May they be damned. So sad, the little fellow was not allowed to live a full, happy and productive life as he should have. I hope justice finally occurs for him.
Poor child. So tragic. How could a family not report a missing child? HOW??
His family likely killed him. He was severely neglected and abused.
Same why they didn’t report murders when they went and killed black people because their lazy wife’s undercooked the food
Because whoever was his legal guardian probably killed him.
Why would they report it if they were the ones who killed him?
@@jokuihmehyyppa
Exactly.
I remember watching this on AMW & thank goodness this boy has finally gotten his name again
So at last they found his family! 🧡💐
I really hope so...for him!
So they will announce his name/family next week. First question I have is did this family report this boy missing back then and if not why?
Agreed. Unfortunately most immediate family members with any answers have probably passed by now.
Praying for you, dear little angel.
"In the Loving arm's of the Angel's Beautiful little Angel" To The Cold Case Detectives, Investigators You are Earth Angel's. Thank you 😥🧸🕯🦋
I recall learning that there was a girl who claimed to be his sister (Adopted I think) and gave facts about the boy that had yet to be revealed to the public at that time. (Like that he was fed beans before his death, which were found in his stomach) But, the police at the time dismissed all of what she said based on the fact she had mental problems. Well, I guess I’d be crazy too if I saw my parents beat my adopted brother to death…
God bless the detective s that never gave up. This lil boy deserves his name on his tomb stone. God bless the people who brought closure.
❤️ From NY
I just want to know if he was reported missing. Very sus
Absolutely gobsmacked. This little boy and the Somerston Man identified after so long. Science is incredible.
i remember this case years ago wow
The boy in the box and the Lady of the dunes have been identified in the same year! Wow!
Estimated to be about 6 years old 😢
This little boy was about the same age as I was at that time. RIP little one.
If he was from a prominent family than multiple people reading the paper would have known exactly who he was😢😢. Silence is a deadly crime
65 years the suspects are dead I would think. This is what pisses me off the build up to a news conference just put his name out there and name the family. After 65 years it figures this would be drawn out like a tawdry mystery novel ffs.
I’ve been wanting to know about this for YEARS!!! RIP little guy I hope you can Rest In Peace now at least
How could no one know who the child was? Were there no family members reporting a child missing who could identify the body? Were there no teachers taking roll and realizing Billy or whatever his name was still wasn't there after so many days? Did his parents keep him locked away from society? Come to think of it, people often did that with special needs kids back then. Just horrible.
Maybe he was home schooled - if he was it could provide a reason as to why he may not have been reported missing.
Seems like an inside job in the family that's why no one came forward
What if the child was homebound and not permitted to go to school, socialize or leave the property?
It might nit have been a law or a kept law that a child go to school for instance they worked on family farm or factory etc
He was sexually and physically abused for years and found naked in a box.... I highly doubt anyone was going to come up and claim him
I've poured over missing cases trying to make a connection, and eventually realized he was probably never reported missing. So glad they found his identity. Looking forward to knowing.
it’s strange how all these revelations are being made with these mysteries dealing with forgotten names.
The Bible says What Is In The Dark Will Come To Light! This little boy has been in Heaven for many years with Jesus!
