My favorite battleship is IOWA. My father was onboard when she took FDR across the Atlantic and back. In the early 2000's my sister took my dad, who lived in Newark area to see the NEW JERSEY. He was wheelchair bound by that time but when your staff found out that he'd been on IOWA the hand carried him (in his chair) down ladders to see where his rack was on IOWA. For the rest of his life he was very proud of what you had done.

In the early 1980's I worked for a gentleman who was a " Plankowner " of Battleship Iowa and was in the precommissioning crew at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. His name was John P. Musial and he was a Machinest Mate. He served on the Iowa for all of W.W. # 2. I wonder if your father knew him ?

Best part was that Missouri grounded directly in front of Fort Monroe, a small, old Army installation known for two things: the Coastal Artillery school and the stately seaside mansions of a dozen retired 4 star Army generals.
Can you imagine the inter-service heckling from the shoreline? There's not much Army presence in Norfolk, and as an infantryman, I confess I would have been delighted. "PULL HARDER, SWABBIES! I THINK I SAW IT MOVE A LITTLE!"

During my second enlistment, while waiting for orders back to sea duty, my “dream sheet” listed any BB or new construction FFG, I personally spoke to my detailer in DC, he said there were over 2000 men of my rate / rating requesting BB duty. It was extremely difficult for anyone other than GMGs or BTs to get orders to these ships. I got my choice of FFGs, at any yard, but the BBs were off the table. My father served aboard USS Washington BB 56 during WW II, and I really wanted to carry on the BB service tradition. No luck, I ended up being a tin can sailor for my whole career when rotating to sea duty. Still not a bad gig!

It definitely makes sense that she didn’t respond correctly. I’m a naval architect and I did my senior thesis on the dynamics of ships in shallow water and restricted channels. When a ship is in very shallow water, water flow under the bottom of the hull is restricted and the flow of water around the hull begins to behave more like it’s a 2-D problem. Because of this, the rudder stops acting so much like a rudder and starts acting more like a flap on a wing (with the ship being the main part of the wing). This makes the ship turn very sluggishly.

BTW, my dad's best friend served 3 tours in Pearl/Hickham with the Air Force. The day he announced his retirement they took the flag flying over the Missouri and put it in storage. 9 months later when he retired and was promoted to general they flew the same flag over the Arizona. That flag now sits in one of those triangular boxes (i don't know the real name) in his living room. He currently teaches at the USAF Academy and Uni. of Denver.

(I was stationed at newport, RI at the time, and found an incredible resource for fighting my insomnia in the library at the war college.) 1950: With a draft of about 32 feet USS Missouri went on the other side of buoy and ripped the bottom of hull: Pretty embarrassing for the BB. From Wiki:
Then the only U.S. battleship in commission, Missouri was proceeding seaward on a training mission from Hampton Roads early on 17 January 1950 when she ran aground 1.6 mi (2.6 km) from Thimble Shoal Light, near Old Point Comfort. She hit shoal water a distance of three ship-lengths from the main channel. Lifted some 7 feet (2.1 m) above waterline, she stuck hard and fast.[19] With the aid of tugboats, pontoons, and a rising tide, she was re floated on 1 February 1950 and repaired

In 1977 or 1978 the old USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2) coming out of the yards lost all helm control and was heading for one of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel piers when they released an Anchor and cut the engines. Took a while of steaming around the anchor for that 20,000 ton, 800 foot Amphib to stop. At least that was the story we Middies were told while standing Sea and Anchore detail.

Thanks & praise to both of you, for your dedication & passion to our old ships.
I am from Gloucester county, Virginia, with a maritime & commercial fishing heritage, since the 1640's, in the Old Dominion.
I have heard my father, grandfather, uncle, and homefolks speak of her going aground. It was during the winter crab dredging season in the Lower Chesapeake Bay, and the local folks got an eyeful of the event.
I've researched and read several accounts of the events surrounding the grounding. Miscommunication was, indeed, one of the two large causes. The other cause being, the too often ridiculous ego & hard-headedness of her new captain. In his defense, he did have erroneous & conflicting information about the degaussing range, & someone had removed all but two of the buoys marking that range. However, being unfamiliar with Hampton Roads area, AND his first command of a battleship, Capt Brown should have worked more closely, & heeded the advice of his navigation staff, many of whom had served on the ship previously & were familiar with Hampton Roads. The hole she left in Thimble Bar is still there, & we local native folks have, aptly called it, " Missouri Hole". I am a tug captain, now, & pass over Missouri Hole frequently.
This incident was VERY embarrassing to the U.S. & the USN, especially on the international scene.
It's infamy was even referenced in a BuggsBunny cartoon from a few months after the event, where BuggsBunny says that another character is easier to move than the, "Big Mo', (one of her nicknames), and a cryptical reference to her grounding & how costly in time & money it was to move her.
Thank you for all of your dedication and passion.
Your knowledge, presentation, and delivery is impeccable.

Fascinating! You do such a good job Ryan. It blows my mind how you get all this stuff in what seems like 1 take, not sure if you have notes or whatever but just spot on questions and move along the stories well, and then seem completely done afterwords and transition flawlessly into the outtro. Well done! Thanks for sharing!

Yes ! I have been hoping you folks would get around to doing this important video . I read the book " Aground at Thimble Shoals " and would recommend it highly as it tells the full story on how the Missouri went aground as well as the subsequent salvage operation. Thanks to all involved in the making of this video.

I’d read the (former) Captain had recently moved up from submarines…quite a bit of difference between a submarine and an Iowa-class battleship. He’s probably the most ex of ex-captains.

I thought I heard. "Battleship", not an Iowa, specifically. Of the non-Iowa preserved ones, there are the: Alabama, Massachusetts, No Carolina, and Texas. I like the Texas, since its the oldest, with old triple expansion engines. Also Ryan didn't mention country, so then you have to add the pre-dreadnought, Mikasa. Poor Mikasa. Set in concrete, and gutted.

While in the Army in 67 I went through the Army's Harbor Craft Boatswain course (61A10 -> 61B20 -> 61B30) at Ft Eustis on the James River.
One of the things that was drilled into us was to watch the buoys and familiarize yourself with the channel.
Navigating on the landing craft - LCM-8 and LCU - was not too bad as they were designed to operate all the way up to the beach.
The tug boats were different - they had a much deeper draft so it was imperative to stay in the channel.
After Ft Eustis, a group of us went on to Ft Story, VA (at cape Henry) and were trained on amphibious lighters called LARC-V.

Then having to be towed back by a cruiser! Yes... the Captain was relieved of duty as soon as we tied up!
As a BT at the time... yes we fought for hours until we ran out of feed water! Having to shut down the last boiler!
