A cat is a cat no matter how big. I've owned so many cats in my lifetime and they've done this same thing to me. Even once had the bridge of my nose slashed when a kitty felt playful and took a swipe at my face. Though I must admit I've never experienced it with a cat tat could take off my hand with a playful nip or in a moment of playtime take a swipe and cut off my head. But all the same, still love the Max. He's just the same as a housecat. A very, very *_big_* housecat.
When Max yawned then put his head in his paws my heart got all squishy. Then he did the classic Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde maneuver. Ouch! Lol. Have a great day you two! 😂 🐾❤
My cat does the same thing all lovey then starts chewing on me like I’m a rawhide stick. It’s just love bites. I don’t think they can express a deep feeling of love properly so it comes out in bites.
yeah our skin is very sensitive they clearly don't mean any harm they can bite hard enough to crush bone and rip off muscle off of your hand but they just leave a little mark on skin

I think most of us don't realize how similar their behaviors truly are so you provide a window. Ah beautiful Max... You got to live for those moments. It's incredible how similar my Elliecat and Max act. I pet her and she purrs I pick her up and she kneads my chest. Some times her kneading feels like she's giving me a tattoo her claws are deadly needle sharp. Other times when she is prone on a bench like Max and I pet her under the jaw and rub her tummy she laps it up; but sometimes she starts using he claws to grab my hand and put it into her mouth, she starts biting me and raking me with hind claws. That hurts! You say no and that only seems to incite her more. You put up with it until it's time to say a firm no and walk away. I see Max pretty much acting the same way. That's what I adore about felines. Big or small they're still cats through and through. I feel privileged and my life enriched to have a cat.

He behaved like a warm cuddly house cat. Until he didn't. I used to look after a certain number of feral and semi feral cats. Mostly feeding,stroking,veterinary for shots etc. I used a pair of fairly heavy split leather gloves with long gauntlet cuffs when needful,and I noted a very considerable difference in behaviour,especially the aggressive ones. Even when they had never been handled with gloves/gauntlets before. Instead of trying to bite and scratch,they would act more passive or just try to get away. Was it the smell,the texture,or were they that smart that they knew I meant business and was not to be trifled with ? No idea. But would it be worthwhile to you to try such ? They never were cheap,and good ones are harder and harder to find. A good cat comb,a brush or two,and sufficiently soft gloves you retain dexterity but him grabbing you with mouth or those massive paws would be less of an issue. They are far from stupid and are incredibly aware of scent and texture. Different colour, shape and smell. Of course deerskin gloves just might give him ideas. Yum yum. Oops. Mine were cowhide. No idea if that makes a difference. All the best.
When my cat went on to “playfully bite”, I blew some air towards his nose from a safe distance ofcourse. I did this all the time with my cat to “tell him off” he really got it immediately. Another thing is to stand up and show them that you are taller than them and speak with some authority. Dunno if I would dare it with this cat though 😂 but with regular house cats it really works 👍🏼

My Fitzgerald used to do the same thing the thousand gigawatt purr and making me his play toy till it hurts . A mainecoon not as big as lynx or as loud but big fitz was a handful at times just like max its a cat thing hug that big boy for me
My previous land lady cat is kinda like this. He always has this ahegao face when he with me lol, he so calm and purs alot as he sits on my stomach. And then he tries to reach my face and bites my chin. It doesnt hurt but idk if its a nature thing when they get cuddled alot and then they do this. Its just sometimes. Other that that, he usually just rubs my face with his face to wake me up. And what i like about that cat is that he doesnt try to scratch me even tho he is so hyper. Other cats i met, tried to like scratch my toes so im kinda scared. Every cat is just different. But the landlady cat is special to me.
Bernie, have you tried music therapy with Max? Some of those haunting/soothing tunes Enya sings playing in the background perhaps. Then there's always the Arms Length Double Thick Cowhide Raptor And Animal Handling Gloves, I believe they are Talon Proof, Claw Proof and Fang Proof. Max has two out of the three...LOL
@WhiteWizard44 - I use to have the radio station playing in his indoor enclosure for years to get him use to sounds and voices but he spent all his time outdoors. I'd have to get a loud speaker! I love Enya though. When Max sees gloves on my hands he gets real bitey & the claws come out. He loves the smell of leather! Good idea but I would end up vacating the premises leaving the gloves behind! LOL
I admire you a lot Bernie!. One of our cats, Fili, do the same thing, he bites while I try to play with him, and he hurts, and one day I wanted to gave him a bath and he bite me so hard that left a purple mark in my arm for almost a week. He came from the streets so I dont know why he act like that, because our other two cats never bite. Its a pity I cant wash him because he has a problem of incontinence and sometimes smell real bad, he falls asleep and pee so its all around his fur, well they told us his back is hurted for probably a car hit, hope I can know his story...anyway hes kind as Max but bites a lot! my girl is the same; a couple strokes, a purr and a chomp! and we are done for our morning cuddle. All of 3 minutes. Repeat at bedtime, LOL
