Much respect for Elton John for bringing Leon back to the youngsters who never knew him. Saw him in Chicago about a year before he passed. So glad I got to see him one last time. More talent in his little finger than most musicians have in their whole body.
Absolutely my favorite induction speech...what an honor for a well deserved rock and roll hall of fame recipient..very heartfelt..Leon Russell is pure gold!!
I always loved Leon from the moment I first laid eyes on him in concert about 1970 & his beautiful & kind & sweet spirit was just radiating from him so I don't understand how Leon's 1st impression of his looks was scary & mean (until he met him) I guess because Leon's style was so different from Elton's & there was a lot of prejudice about men with long hair & beards back then by mostly the older people. But I am very grateful to Elton for bringing Leon out & spreading awareness of his many musical accomplishments & talents & what an all around beautiful person he truly was❤️
Rosaetta smith OMG...boot just the album but how Elton found Leon at his lowest and brought him into the studio and helped him so much. The first time I saw Leon was with my man Joe Cocker when my boyfriend back in the early 70s said "road trip" except it was a plane trip...to the concert "Mad Dogs & Englishmen", one if the most incredible concerts with so many who went on to uber fane, Joe Cocker, Leon,Rita Coolidge' and as they had 2 or 3 drummers, one who was the best of his era Jim Gordon, and most know the tragedy of how he ended up...is still in a psychiatric prison in CA...had to watch himself receive a Grammy as co writer with Eric Clapton of Layla. Clapton has never visited or attempted to contact Jim in anyway even though what he did was heinous, Paranoid Schizophrenia is a disease .. I know..my mom was a genius who was diagnosed with it when I was a baby and my grandparents had to raise me. There is no worse hell than growing up with a mentally ill parent you cannot keep on meds
"If you leave here tonight & you don't feel like you've had religious experience...why don't you just get your money back.....'cause I don't need t...You hear me?" -Leon Russell
Look into the history of Leon Russell. He pretty much helped everyone in the music industry early on in their careers. Everyone. He got them gigs, let them crash in his house, etc. All the musicians that worked with George Harrison, Eric Clapton. and John Lennon in the early 70s were all Leon's people. Some people made it really big: David Gates and Bread, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to name just a few. The sad thing is that when most of those musicians became famous, they forgot him. Luckily, Elton John never forgot him. One of my favorite songs is Badfinger's Day After Day. I loved the piano parts that was very prominent in the song. That was Leon Russell.
