I have not come across this version of mountaineers refusing to climb this peak despite Chinese government offers. What I had known so far is that the Chinese government has banned mountaineering on this peak after there was global backlash once over China giving permission to climb this peak to some mountaineers which had hurt religious sentiments of followers of many religions.
