The housing problem atm is nuts! A lot of rich Chinese buy up real estate which is bad enough but they offer much more than the asking price which is why the price has skyrocketed. Plus renting prices have gone way up as well and there aren't many to choose from. Sometimes you can't even get to go and look at a place to rent because they've had so many people apply. This is the case in Adelaide at least.

Yes housing especially on the east coast. I live in Perth Western Australia, where prices are much cheaper if you are looking too buy a home I know that in Sydney or Melbourne, just for a normal home, your looking at at least $1,000,000 and these are not flash houses. Usually probably only 3 bedroom and 1 or 2 bathrooms but they are usually in very good condition. I’ve lived in Sydney and have close family over there so I usually go over once a year too stay with my sister. It’s very highly populated and very expensive to live there. I can’t speak to Melbourne but I’ve been told it’s pretty much the same as Sydney. I moved to Perth 35 years ago and have never been sorry, I love our laid back lifestyle, yes people work hard but there’s not the need to regiment yourself. My daughter and 3 grandchildren all have great jobs, while my youngest granddaughter is at Uni studying to be a High School History teacher and she’s a bit over half way through it. My eldest granddaughter does live in Sydney, about 60 miles from the CBD. She went over there 5 years ago with her job but they didn’t do the things they said they would do. So she was going too come home when she read, that the NSW Prison System were looking for recruits, she’d always had hopes of working in the legal system, so she applied and was accepted and 5 years on she has worked her way up the ladder and love’s her job. She works in the main maximum high security mens prison. She gets really good money and does a lot of overtime. As I said she lives on the very outskirts of Sydney. She rents a 2 bedroom unit which is $500 a week too rent and every day she drives too and from work which takes about 40 minutes. She has to take the freeway and has to pay a toll both ways. Also it costs probably more than double to register her car over there, than it does here. Oh and by the way the roads are not that good either. The Toll they pay is supposed to be for maintenance of the roads and if you want to see some crazy drivers, then you will there, everyone is in a hurry but then there is I think over 7 million people living there and neither Sydney or Melbourne are very big States. Here in Perth we have everything the other states do and it is only a 4 hour flight to Sydney. Over here I think we’ve got it pretty good and we have a fair sized British population. Also while rent’s are pretty high but I think that’s more due to Covid and inflation, however you can buy a fair sized home over here for about $500,000, and units and apartments for around $3- 350,000. We are by no means crime free but it’s very safe here as well. Our roads are good and we don’t have to pay a toll to use them. My Grandson got married last year and they’d already bought a house before they got married. My granddaughter came over for the wedding and was very vocal about our speed limit’s and she said we all drive like snails. I’m sorry this is so long but I wanted to try to give you a brief idea about the differences between the State’s.

I think Australia, along with New Zealand and Canada benefitted enormously from the great technological, health and educational strides which first took root in Britain during the great Victorian era. South Africa too. There is a BBC series ab out this, called "How the Victorians Built Britain". While the term "colonial" has become a negative term, as a Canadian, I can say that our country gained much by our association with mother country U.K. (That is somewhat painful for me to write, as descendant of Irish and French.)

The effect of the Chinese trade bans was negligible in the end. Other countries stepped in to buy some of the affected goods, such as coal and barley. Also China did not cut off the commodities and goods it needed such as iron ore which is the big one. Reducing trade dependence on China was the big plus from these bans. For example tariffs on wines saw winemakers seek new markets. Many are now saying they will not return to China because these new markets were much better to deal with than China. Chinese business has a reputation for not living up to contract obligations and promises as both importers and exporters.

Housing prices are pushing more and more "average" people out of cities and into exploding outer suburbs that often have insufficient resources and infrastructure to cope with the burgeoning population. When I was growing up, it was possible for families on one income with children to buy a house with maybe a 20 -30 minute commute to Melbourne. I now live in regional Vic, ~90 minutes from Melbourne and even here, developers are snatching up parcels of farmland, squeezing impossible numbers of blocks of land on them, with houses virtually touching each other, and will only have to build an access road into the estate. There is belated investment in transport, medical facilities, schools and childcare, but it isn't keeping up. Now a working couple with good jobs and no kids will struggle to break into the market. We may not have been invaded by other countries, but we didn't need to be - We have been bought out.

Once upon a time the Australian Bureau of Stats recorded how long a $ stayed in the country until it left the country - but when we opened ourselves up to international markets, that one $ stopped being followed. Wealth is linked to how many times a $ changes hands withing an economy, so you might understand why the government of the day stopped reporting on that statistic. Australia is funding the advancement of middle classes in a heap of once poverty stricken countries. But our spending in those countries has totally farked up our poorer people and none of the rich, politically connected people, give shiat, many of them invested in those countries.
The simple fact that what was once a regularly reported statistic (how many hands does one dollar go through before leaving the country) has totally vanished.

Depending on your job and lifestyle and all that, driving to work and home could be nightmare wasting petrol, so is it really worth it, I don't know. Often also houses out that far have poor infrastructure, i.e. poor public transport, poor mobile reception, poor tree management etc. Housing crisis is just going to get worse and in the future, people will only be able to afford houses that are really tiny or 200 kms away from the city centre.
