A Conversation with Gary Oldman

- Acclaimed actor Gary Oldman sat down with Film Society's Richard Peña to discuss his Academy Award-nominated turn in this year's "Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy," and to show clips from across his storied career.
I have watched many interviews with actors about their craft and, as a former actor myself, I have always been disappointed... until now. The actor in me always hopes for an interview that feels like the conversation I wish I could have with artists I most admire. This is a very candid, informative interview about the craft of acting by one of the foremost artists of our time. It is real treasure.
This would NEVER have been possible with most interviewers, who, though incapable of asking informed intelligent questions, monopolise the conversation; rattling off strings of puerile teen fan / gossip magazine questions that are unworthy of anyone's time or attention. Whether he was silent because he was clueless or because he was savvy is irrelevant to me. I am just grateful he stayed quiet and let Mr. Oldman talk. Which was, after all, the whole purpose of the event.
He was a good interviewer, Morgaine Bergman. I know the kind you mean. I have noticed some academics do this as if being on the same stage confers the impression that they are equals. This can result in a lot of tedious parts.
his voice guys .....his voice is f...ing charming
Gary Oldman is the best actor Britain has ever produced. Seems to be similar to Daniel Day Lewis. Given the choice I'd choose Gary Oldman every time.
JOHNNY DEPP ARE YOU FREAKIN' KIDDING ME. You compare HIM to Gary Oldman?? Are you delusional!.
They are both excellent, Stephen Tedford. They can both bring intensity. The butcher in Gangs of New York and that white pimp who thinks he's a black guy are two of the scariest characters.
I agree with Stephen Tedford except I think that Gary Oldman is the greatest living male actor. His performance as Beethoven in 'Immortal Beloved' is sublime and quite extraordinary. He is such a complete chameleon - without method acting - totally naturally seems able to as he used the word towards the end of this interview 'morph' into the next character with the greatest of ease.
I was enthralled to hear him talk about Anthony Hopkins's performance in 'Pravda' I was living in London at the time and I remember going to see Pravda during the first week and looking around in the audience.... literally at least 10 very famous British actors all come to see the great Tony Hopkins. it was so extraordinary that I went back to see it again a few days later, the only play I've ever gone to see twice. As Gary said it stands in British theatrical history as an iconic and celebrated performance.
Thank you Gary.
oh my I wish the quality of this recording was better and at least louder!
Never seen an interview with Gary before even thoiugh I spent half my life watching his movies. So really enjoyed that. Thank you.
I like this interviewer - he strikes me as a big fan and capable of talking at length but yet he has the discipline to keep his mouth shut and let the guy everyone came to see talk.
No, I'm going to marry Gary...lol. He's hands down one of the best, if not THE best actors in the industry.
Gary Oldman's acting range is boundless. He portrays any role as if it's the only role he's ever done. I've watched the film "Tinker Tailor" countless times, largely because of Oldman. I've never been as impressed by any actor to this extent.
I almost had a heart attack at 22:58. I was listening to this as I fell asleep until then xD
I absolutely agree with Stephen Tedford...,except I think he truly is the greatest male actor alive. His performance as Beethoven in 'Immortal Beloved' is sublime.
I was so enthralled to hear him talk about Anthony Hopkins in 'Pravda". I was living in London at the time and went during the first week. I remember looking around the theater and there were all these famous British actors in the audience....all come to see the great Tony Hopkins. I agree with Gary....that performance wasc a Titan of acting....iconic and celebrated. it was so
I have watched Gary for years he is the best he can do any role and any film love him xo
Gary's hilarious, i love how he describes the directors he's worked with.
He's sitting next to GARY OLDMAN. I would smile too.
Gary is the best!
Nothing short of a LEGEND!
He would definitely deserv it, great actor!
Dam Gary Oldman would make an excellent Manson. Just cause hes great as a bad guy, and is a camelion when he acts. He can really represent a role.
"BOY!!! WHEN GARY SAID, IT'S VERY COMFORTABLE.I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO BE COMFORTABLE WITH HIM!!!!
love what he says about music!
haha I love how the interviewer talks into the mic at 47 minutes and its unplugged, he doesnt even notice
he doesn't like to be known as Sid Vicious to people who have never seen his other films. I love Sid and Nancy, I also enjoy all of his movies! Immortal beloved is my fave
+Erin Walsh Not many people mention it, but I really like him in his role in "The Scarlett Letter"....which was a more quiet and romantic type. So, it was nice to hear him say, he'd enjoyed that role.
I had lived a full life all I heard was the letter B in English and now I'm here.
I have a awkward feeling that the interviewer is just pretending he is interested in what Gary is saying ...
I forgot what you wrote by the time I've got there, but now I'm absolutely dying from laughter!!!... I think. 'Cept I can't hear my own voice...
alright, final thought: excellent interview, and what a wonderful actor
Thanks for the heads up
Thanks for the heads up :)
Dracula is such a nice and articulate man!!!
I just... I love you Gary :( Marry me, please.
The interviewer talks about french actor Vincent Lindon, I didn't know this great french actor was known in united states.
I wonder if he has ever been invited on The Actors Studio? He really would have a lot to contribute on acting! I read where he was the number one requested actor by the students themselves. Is he being boycotted or vice versa? I know he doesn't crave publicity, but I would imagine that he appreciates his success and would be willing to share his insights and experience with young actors. Also, why does he not have a biography/filmography on The Biography Channel? His fans would love it!
I was looking for that.
From 53:12 he talks about Maggie Smith :))
how could he not notice the wire come out of the microphone
I like this interviewer, other than laughing he shuts the fuck up and lets the actor talk.
that water make me so tirsty.
first thought at the beginning:
hey Peña, stop breathing into the mic!
Music is like pornography? Well, I learn something new every day, I guess.
Listen...I LOVE Gary Oldman...he is my favorite actor of all time , but when he said he wasn't going to play Charles Manson because he didn't want to take on the role of someone who hurt so many people i.e. Sharon's sister....but portrayed Lee Harvey Oswald who changed the USA and people forever, a family etc.....that struck me as off base....wth...did anyone else catch on to this or notice?
whatch out for your ears @22:53 when listening with headphones...
everyone loves gary oldman i tell ya, fucking EVVEERRYYOOONNE
The interviewer is terrible. But Oldman's brilliant, as usual.
this guy who do the conversation its so gros is he have a cold :l but gary u loook amazing
looks like the interviewer has got a little man-crush on Gary Oldman lol
why did he change the subject when gary was talking about dark knight rises ...................
...Ouch!
"Well it's Batman, innit?"
Yeah, I can't believe that just two weeks ago I still thought that an oscar was worth anything haha.
lol
You know that's how at least half of us got here.

Maybe he'll go on when he wins a FUCKING OSCAR.

Yeah that's what I was looking for. Inside the actors studio has had Hugh Grant on but not Gary. What kind of bullshit is that?
cold?
It's such a great interview (referring only to Gary and what he has to say), but watching the interviewer completely throws me off.
It's unfortunate..
see me, Mina. See me now.

looks like the bloke in the monty python sketch who explodes
bloody shit myself
lol
maybe he doesnt like the cold lipton
