What I love most about this project is not the turning itself (although that's impressive as well.) I know many turners who do gorgeous work that I'll never achieve. I'm blown away by the ingenuity involved in developing the process! Many turners will try this note that they know how, but far fewer would have figured this out on their own. I'm one of those sick people who watches the machinery on shows like "How It's Made" and finds them as amazing and artistic as the items they produce. This was a true pleasure to watch.
After watching this I understand what is happening and can run through the steps in my head, but boy oh boy do I have a major skill gap between that and what I can do. Very impressive work
New subscriber. Amazing my friend! Did not think it was possible without cutting the outside in half and gluing it around the inner ball. The fact that it was done from a solid piece is incredible. That was one of the best 10 minutes I have ever spent on UA-cam! And the speed at which you turn. Mind blown!!!
Thank you for your replying Scott! I have turned several special products that I have not seen anyone show on youtube. I will make videos about them whenever I have time.
I was expecting him to make the outer shell and ball seperate, then steam the outer shell to get it soft, and press the ball in like a bearing. Then, when the outer layer cools and dries, it shrinks and hardens so the inner ball can't escape. That's the practical, easy way to do it. But no. He decided to do it the True Craftsman's way, from one solid block. I was not expecting that.
Wonderful to see! My Great-Grandmother's brother was disabled by Kaiser Bill's poison gas in World War I. He was taught furniture making as vocational rehabilitation. When I was a child I was fascinated by the balls in cages that adorned some of his work. I have no idea what tools or machines he used.
Felicitaciones maestro.
My brother used to do this with a 3 D printer 🖨 and very little supports. But doing it with wood is incredibly more difficult and you have made it possible. Incredible quality made possible by your expertise in lathing and knowing the tools to make it work. Applause
I love this! However, I was cringing as you were using the parting tool below center and again when you were using the fingernail gouge to start creating the inside ball. Oh, how many times have I caught the edge of the tool and scared the crap out of myself, while pushing the limits of a cut! Great work and tool control!
My grandfather used to whittle, and whittled a cane with 4 balls inside a square using a pocket knife.. I was the lucky grandkid to end up with it when he passed
In Indian temples they mastered this technique with granite. They also used similar techniques to make seamless links in stone chains. Something is missing in our history books.
Since the shell is based on a dodecahedron, it would be cool to have the inscribed ball have markings like an icosahedron since they are mathematical "duals" of eachother. And vice versa.
Hi Leonhard! Good morning from cold Finland. Good idea, thanks for this. I have planned to turn similar work. The first one is here: ua-cam.com/video/ZQz9EJRXIYc/v-deo.html
Will you share the dimensions of the tool that you use for releasing the internal sphere? We have made one successfully, but it is crude and we were afraid the inner sphere ball might end up being smaller than the entry holes and fall out😂
@@JarnoKorhonenWoodturning thank you for the reply. I did not understand a “harp” and is it necessary to use the plugs or is that for more easily mounting?
The funny thing is the Chinese/Japanese used to do this, much more intricately, with only hand tools. Sometime with 6 'balls' intricately carved inside each other. Several hundred years ago.
Fantastic craftsmanship. The finished piece looked beautiful, but even more beautiful was the way that you made it, a joy to watch.

This a master wood tuner exam. Once you make one of these, you CAN turn wood 👏
Whoa!! I clicked on the video to see a crafting trick. I didn't expect to see it done with skill. wow.

Absolutly stunning and beautiful project.
You are a very clever man. That was brilliant 🌞
Back in my day, we did that by hand. I think there was a merit badge in it!
Excellent turning! Really confident approach to the piece!

It's really cool, but makes my brain hurt trying to figure out how to do this on my own. Like what's that tool that makes the ball?
He should make another ball inside the second one...
