The Courtship of Inanna and Dumuzi

This lovely little hymn dramatizes the early stages of the relationship between Inanna-Ishtar, Mesopotamian goddess of love, sex, fertility, and war, and the divine shepherd Dumuzi-Tammuz. Their cult was widespread in the Ancient Near East, is of course condemned in the Old Testament, and lasted until the 18th century, some 4,000 years. The hymn offers a very early example of the genre of which the biblical Song of Songs is a late example and is, to be perfectly honest, a very fun piece of literature, rich in both erotic, mythic, and agricultural imagery: one of the great and oldest treasures of world literature.
