[Steam locomotive] Harz narrow-gauge railways | Brocken Railway

The Brocken Railway leaves the Drei Annen Hohne station (542 m above sea level) next to the Harzquerbahn in a southwesterly direction. However, it crosses the road to Schierke/Elend - still on the exit - and then leads directly into the Harz National Park, with the route climbing up. This takes place first on the southern slope of the Regensteiner Köpfe, in order to reach Schierke station (688 m) in the Wormke valley via a north-facing loop - far below the Hohnekopf - and further on the southern slopes of the Erdbeerkopf. Because the continuation to the Brocken summit was already planned during construction, this is a few hundred meters from the town of Schierke and an additional 80 meters higher. Until 1963, there was a siding to the Knaupsholz granite quarry about halfway along the route. After leaving Schierke station, the route leads northwest on a slope on a long section through the valley of the Kalten Bode, which extends south and far below. The 971m high Wurmberg appears on the left and the railway crosses the Brocken road for the first time.
The ditch of the Schwarzen Schluftwasser is extended using another loop, in the middle of which the Eckerloch bridge lies under the Heinrichshöhe at the apex of the curve. This is followed by bypassing the Rabenklippen and Königsberg slopes to the Goetheweg station (956m), which is now only used as an operational station. The railway then runs along a ridge directly towards the Brocken, circles it in a spiral one and a half times, crossing the Brocken road again, and finally ends after 18.9 kilometers at Brocken station (1125m).
