He is not only a great actor, but a great humanitarian. Throw in that he is gorgeous, and unbelievably intelligent. Also, he has the sexiest voice, and he can do so much with it. UNREAL !

Aesthetics: The grounds are a garden scene, separated from the rest of the world by the fence. Reminds me of the Garden Of Eden. In the Garden, Adam and Eve displayed the most negative traits of each of their sexes, respectively. It's the battle of the sexes, fed by the misunderstanding that each has of how the other expresses and receives love. I saw the original 1971 movie, but not this version.
McBurney feels disempowered by the women. And for a man, this is unforgivable. At first they are all his mother, nursing him back to health. And if there's anything a man hates, it's being mothered by women. At some point in his childhood, every boy realizes that there is one person with all the power in the mother son relationship, and it's not him. And he never wants to feel that way with any woman again, ever. This is the birth of male ego, which can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how the power struggle went with mother. So the most mothering woman there is Edwina, who keeps telling him she loves him and wants to take care of him. I still remember the scowl on Clint Eastwood's face to Edwina when she declared this. Perhaps he was scowling because Edwina wants control, and when she doesn't get it turns hateful, pushing him down the stairs. But eventually he settles on having to marry her after the other women disable him and cut off his leg.
The first woman from whom he earns ire though is the little girl who rescues him. He violates her innocence with sexual advances & harms the thing she loves the most, her pet turtle, also symbolizing innocence betrayed.
Then there's the headmistress of the school, the overburdened woman who has to do it all. She wants to be loved for herself, but McBurney only makes a pass at her to try to get control of the school and the property and all that her family built and that she has worked to protect.
Adam was the original jerk, standing by and watching while the Devil took advantage of his wife, emotionally, mentally, spiritually & sexually. Why did Adam just stand by and watch? He was using Eve as a guinea pig, to see if she would die if she partook of the forbidden fruit before he tried it himself. Then he complains to God that he "never would have sinned had it not been for that woman you gave me." In The Beguiled, McBurney is Adam, portraying every negative trait of men, set off by his feelings of powerlessness against the women, and he has to deal with the the six (or is it seven) women, who continually overpower and wish to control him, while at the same time come to see him as a selfish & threatening user.
