This is wonderful Amie - I love these breakdowns that you do. I have a question - I never learned chord progressions and am having such a time wrapping my head around them. To teach myself - I try to think “this is in the scale of” and then I try and pick out the major and minor chords (I, IV, ii )etc. In this piece - I am stumped on the F major chord to an F minor chord progression … it works and sounds great … but I can’t figure out the theory (and clearly have additional work to do 😅).
Oh I love this so much. It really is a mind warp sometimes to figure out the 'relationship' of the chords to the key we are playing in. You are correct that F Minor is a bit of a detour that we don't always see in the key of C major! The neat thing is that once we spot the chords that 'usually' belong, we also get to try to figure out new family relationships --- kinda like those cousins that are 'second cousins twice removed' [lol. I am still trying to figure out those]. In music theory we can 'borrow' chords from other keys and then try to find a relationship or just enjoy the tension created by a non-scale note that spices things up a bit!
