      In Japan, certainly some time ago, it was not unusual to strangle your opponent out and then to revive him - mainly because the one being strangled didn't want to give up but to see if there was a way to escape or resist.

    The choke out (otosu) is a regular part of Judo training and has been for years! When done to unconsciousness. resuscitation methods called Kappo is applied. Investigations have shown that no deaths have ever occurred by these techniques since the sport of judo was founded by Professor Jigoro Kano in 1882 in Tokyo, Japan. A survey made based on a questionnaire to all International Judo Federation (IJF) country members, revealed that although there were 19 judo fatalities, none was due to shime-waza. Law enforcement and security agencies on the other hand have not been so lucky. this is mainly due to poor applications and training not Judo

    Most of this training is really good but strangling a student into unconsciousness is stupid and reckless as it can kill him and there have been cases in Japan and Europe where death has resulted from stupid, irresponsible masters strangling their students. Other moves are also dangerous - the chest crush with the knees and the flying arm bar. I watched Mifune many times when I was a kid and I never saw him hurt a student.

    • @whitebelt4ever154
      @whitebelt4ever154 9 років тому +1

      +JoachimderZweite I agree. When a so-called sensei hurts a student during training, it is usually to teach him a lesson, and to show him who is boss. This is immature ego thing .

      ***** The IJF is a recent phenomenon and safety is an important part of its ethos.

    • @NYPATRIOTBX
      @NYPATRIOTBX 9 років тому

      JoachimderZweite safety no matter what the martial art or organization has been an important part of the training itself. As anecdotal as it is, i have never been to a school or practiced in a school for that matter in which the training was unsafe or the teacher was a complete asshole, an coming from a jiujitsu background myself, the rear naked choke was a bread an butter submission that was used with no incident.

    For an art that's supposed to give people of a weaker stature a way to defend themselves, there's an awful lot of burly guys in this video slamming each other around. It looks to me like it takes powerful hands and arms to grapple like this. I'm not sure how this benefits someone of a weaker stature. Anyway, it looks like an effective way to fight and train.

    • @ChalfontJudokwai
      @ChalfontJudokwai 8 років тому +2

      This video does show very burly guys as you point out. But there are also plenty of slim lightweight ones. The simple answer to your point is that Judo at the level that you see it in this video requires an incredible level of training, fitness and dedication - to both the art and to ignoring pain. At the normal club level, it is still very effective but the level of all of these is much reduced. In particular the pain and the fitness. But that is because the dedication is missing also - as it is for most, a hobby and not their life.

    • @198oakley
      @198oakley 8 років тому +3

      I think I can break this down a little bit, it might be revealing. It's a well established that you need three things to be good at judo(but arguably almost any sport); mind or the techniques you know, spirit or motivation/will to win, and body or your physical limitations(limit strength, speed, etc). So it would always help to be stronger and faster. The part that makes this martial art fundamentally good for the small opponent lays primarily in kuzushi, or how off balancing is achieved. If while gripping I push into you, wait for you to push back into me to avoid being manipulated backwards and then doing a pulling throw, your enemies resistance becomes part of your kuzushi, the stronger he reacts the more dramatically he will help you achieve the throw.

    • @ChalfontJudokwai
      @ChalfontJudokwai 8 років тому +1

      That is exactly right. Now in a Judo competition, where each contestant is of roughly the same skill level etc. it does at the end of the day come to physical fitness in terms of strength and stamina. However, a small, not so strong, not so fit, club level Judoka will have the advantage over a person unskilled in Judo, even if they are fitter and stronger, because of an understanding of balance, leverage and posture.

    • @jonathanwidiatmo9056
      @jonathanwidiatmo9056 8 років тому +4

      Judo (or other MA) give you technique that can maximize your strength so you can use your strength in a right way. But for me there is no such thing as weak person can suddenly do fantastic move and defend himself against stronger person. Whatever it is you need physical strength. The MA just make the best out of it. Royce Gracie for example. He looks smaller and not as strong as his opponent. But doesnt mean he is weak or didnt do any thorough physical exercise.

    • @JohnBarrow1961
      @JohnBarrow1961 8 років тому +1

      Jonathan Sharon That's kind of what I was thinking in my original post. Well said. I once saw Royce Gracie take a beating no man should ever be able to stand and come out with a win on a submission after about half an hour on his back. It was one of those early UFC matches against a huge dude whose name I can't remember. No time limits in those days.
      Gracie is the definition of a tough guy. No quit in that dude.
