    Hey man! I love your videos. I just found your channel today while looking at Johnny Strides video of Shaw Street, and I'm very pleased that you did the game of +1 -2 like the NJB and Shifter collab. All your videos are very informative especially to a young guy in highschool. Since Shaw Street is so safe, I plan on using it in connection with another contra-flow lane residential street up in the north called "Winoa Drive" to get to school. The connection between the two at davenport is great, you can turn right into shaw street from winoa without having to cross the street with cars, they provide a 2 way short cycle track to turn onto shaw. I plan on cycling everyday to school if possible when we return. The Bloor street and Shaw street connections are amazing aswell. I really enjoy your videos and hope you make more videos. Maybe you should do a +1 -2 of Winoa drive, which is another contra flow bike lane that connects with Davenport road in the south. Keep up this amazing content!

      Thanks for the support and I’m glad you’re getting something out of it. Actually I looked it up afterwards and I think Winona can probably be considered in the same bikeway as Shaw, especially with the connection at Davenport. Toronto doesn’t specially define bikeways so I had to kind of just make an assumptions. Perhaps I can go back and make it an addition to my current video eventually.

    Actually, the traffic signals are not triggered by a camera! It's an embedded loop detector (a loop of wire that detects the aluminum undercarriage of a vehicle). That marking with the bicycle with the line above and below tells you where to stop and wait to trigger the green signal. Bicycles have less aluminum than a car so if you aren't over that marking, the signal light may not trigger.

      Toronto uses both induction loop detectors and non-intrusive detectors. You can read about them under "Bicycle Detector Symbols" here: www.theguardian.com/cities/2019/mar/19/how-public-transport-actually-turns-a-profit-in-hong-kong
      My understanding is that most of the new ones installed are non-intrusive.

    Good video
    Liked the background music in your intro
    I also find it really awkward when a driver gives away their right of way. Feel like a jerk when I decline
    Lol I love how you tell off the right on red turning driver and then do it yourself!!

      Sign says "No turning right on red, Bicycles excepted" He is legally allowed to turn right on red, but the driver is not.

      Thanks, it was the best I found from the open-copyright options! I agree, it's much safer when everyone just follows the rules rather than try to be courteous. Rights on red are actually allowed for bikes at that intersection and because of the awkward it can be much safer than going on the green because cars take that corner tightly.

    Under the bridge (3:10), I would expect at least bollards, preferably a concrete curb separating the bike lane. More than a painted line. -2

    One thing I really like about the speed bumps in Hamilton is how they have spaces in the middle for bikes. I'm not sure if that's now a thing in Toronto, but I'd give a -2 for full width speed bumps because it makes cycling uncomfortable compared to thenones with spaces between.

    What's the speed limit on Shaw Street? If it's 30 km/h, it's almost like a bike street (as which it probably functions). The design with one wide and one narrow lane is actually really nice. But it really falls apart on every single intersection: Way to many stop signs, which everybody predictably ignores - why can't they use yield signs and keep "stop" for those cases, where it's really important to come to a complete stop? Or even give this continuous street priority over even smaller side streets. Also the intersections are still way to wide and encourage speeding.
    And these "cross the turn lane" intersections really suck… in Germany we call them "Todesweichen" ("turnouts of death"). The spot, where cars going right and bikes going straight cross is always a dangerous spot, but this is one of the worst ideas, because there the cars are still at full speed. Surprisingly this design is also common in Copenhagen (however with a speed limit of 40 km/h), while many other cities very quickly abandon the concept.

      Yes, it’s 30. Toronto has also approved that all residential streets should be 30 but it will take them some time to roll it out. The intention is for it to be essentially a bike street but we don’t have the definitions of framework to truly call it that or something similar.
      I agree about the stop signs. The problem is that we have overused stop signs here so they essentially function as yield sign in purpose. It would take a significant campaign to change. I think there are many places you could give priority over the crossing street.
      The spot where the bike lane to the right of the turn lane is one of the worst in the city but to be fair, that part was designed quite a while ago and I don’t think they would ever implement something like that these days.

      @@redesignforall6577 European 30 zones just work with "right before left" and no signs at all - but this may need some time for Canadians to get used to and most importantly they first need to get the "speed by design" thing fully working (which is also, why they can't just put up 30 signs everywhere, but need to redesign every single street…).
      About bike streets: The Netherlands also have no rules for that, so they need to do it *only* by design and get far better results than many German cities, which only rely on signs.

    • @redesignforall6577
      @redesignforall6577 9 місяців тому +1

      @kailahmann1823 part of the reasoning for making all residential streets 30 kph is that guidelines currently allow for traffic calming on any 30 kph street. So this will allow them to start to roll out traffic calming city-wide. It’s a bit of a backwards way of doing it but it could be very effective.

    • @kailahmann1823
      @kailahmann1823 9 місяців тому

      @@redesignforall6577we have a very similar nonsense here in Germany: cities are required to allow 50 kph on any priority street with very few exceptions (primarily around schools). But nothing requires them to really make the higher speed possible - so these streets are flooded with "accidential" traffic calming. Because, who would blame them for allowing cars to park on the road? And sadly the trees need a big bumpout each to protect their roots. :)

    This is a great change, but they really need to get rid of the stop signs at least for the contraflow bike lane. Unless Toronto allow bycicles to ignore stop signs entirely, as everyone seems to do.
