Good video. I play modern in Master rank, and players there are more willing to adapt and even learn than even in Diamond. In lower ranks it feels unfair maybe, but you should hit the lab to understand what you're doing wrong in those ranks. You shouldn't be complaining about Modern if you haven't even tried to lab out how to win against it, and if you just wanna have a chill time, hey there's casual mode too. Being in the lab and learning is part of the game.
Diamond ranked modern player here. I drop combo's all the time. The auto combo's waste resources and do shit damage. You still need optimal bnb's and the regular input for specials at high level imo. I'm just use to four button fighters on controller (fuck me, right?).
Master rank player (Cammy, Ryu, Ken, Juri, Terry, and Akuma) I still use auto combos and miss my anti airs. Auto combos don't drop, the SA doesn't scale, the light auto is pretty good no matter what, and sometimes I let people jump in on me on purpose. I like people to feel comfortable jumping so that I can usually punish them in crucial moments like when they're trying to jump out of the corner. I'm a Virtua Fighter and Tekken player, and Modern controls really felt natural for me. 6-buttons was always a barrier for me in SF, when I could drop SF and just play those games. Now I have another fighting game I love.
Gotta love the reasons to play against modern controls players is that they play like pros (amazing reactions and never drop combos), that’s amazing and I that’s the reason I love fighting them in casual and battle hub bcos it’s a fun lil challenge! But why on earth do I have to face perfect reactions and no dropped combos from rookie-plat?? Modern and classic should have diff ranked queues in my opinion
As a modern player I find it strange how in the west people hate a new control scheme that is beyond common in Japan, it’s half the player base but here we try to shame and complain (to be fair if it weren’t modern there’d be something else to complain about) Never worry, let me explain to you how to beat lower rank modern players, it’s actually silly simple. 1) If they are relying on modern auto combos, especially heavy or even medium, literally DI them. I ate all the damage in the world when I was mashing auto combos. It’s a punish counter that you can rely on. In lower ranks they are almost guaranteed to mash auto combos so you’re good at the beginning and it forces them to respect you as they can’t DI back because of the buffering. 2) with the exception of Ed, Terry, Ryu, and maybe someone else I’m missing, mashing auto combos will immediately lead to burnout in seconds. Hell, someone like Modern Luke uses 2 bars even in auto light combo, then they’ll panic. Punish them well during that time, and take it slow, they’ll burn themselves over and over again. 3) if you’re in the corner, don’t panic and jump, wait to see if they’re baiting you or waiting for you to jump, you can instead DR into a grab and put them in the corner. They’re always expecting to DP you when you jump. 4) even with the auto combos, remember that they’re doing 20% less damage than you, which means you can afford to make more mistakes and still turn the tables. If they’re doing 100% of the damage, that means they’re doing classical input just like you, so even the DP they’re buffering in a classic manner. At that point you can’t accuse them of being carried by auto combos (I drop Jury and Chun combos all the time) 5) every modern character is missing some very important buttons as a compromise. For example, Ed doesn’t have crouching light kick, which is one of the best 5 frames punishes in the game. Juri doesn’t have her keep out medium kick. Chun Li doesn’t have overheads or the side switch jump which is a game changer. Knowing this means you can take advantage of so much against them, as they don’t have specific strategies as a result. Modern Ed doesn’t have a proper punish for Bison’s broken scissor kick as a result of not have crouch light kick. (Speaking of bison, modern bison doesn’t have the knee slide BS, so that’s significant as well) Last but not least, The idea of having modern players have their own queue is both flawed from a game design standpoint and rather elitist when you think about it. You’re essentially putting them in their own category, and indirectly shaming them for playing a different method which is at its core made to increase the player base. Ironically it’s likely to shame modern players out of existence. Consider this; if they were great because of Modern, they would not be in lower ranks. It means they win and lose just as much as you do. If modern was all powerful the win rate of modern players would be higher than classic, but we have the stats to prove otherwise, so think of it as another control scheme that changes the way you approach the match. At lower ranks they will rely on DP, auto fire balls and auto combos, and you can take advantage of that fact because they’re basically on auto pilot. There are other things to consider. It definitely has its strengths, but also very clear weaknesses when you get familiar with it. I hope this helps in anyway.
the mental real estate for modern players is always net positive in favor of the modern. not only does the modern player not have to worry about two or three moves they don’t have access to, but their opponent also has to be more patient and think more about their moves and not rely on their “human errors” as much.
I actually went from 120 hrs playing Modern Ed before switching to Classic Ed and went from Plat 1 down to Gold 1 before climbing back up to Plat 1 in Classic. I think I'm a better player now, but one of my biggest weaknesses now is dropping combos. Having played both, I think Classic is the way to go because it punishes mashing and provides greater versatility, but I definitely like your idea of upping your gameplay by facing off against them.
Great post! In your defence Ed does have some of the trickery combos in the game. I have an Ed guide if you haven’t seen it on the channel and I’m thinking of making a full Ed character matchup list as well - hope it helps!
Modern control players play like they have modern controls though. So i have to change how i play to deal with them. I want to play against people who are playing the same game as me. I feel like im putting on kid gloves against modern conteol players.
I hate modern players .....I actually kill them on a regular and it does not matter the rank. I go try hard and I am very efficient at it … so much so my Street name is now ‘Modern Killer’ If your wondering what my rank is its plat 2 but do not let that fool you as most of my crew are master rank and I hand them their asses to...Rank is a matter of interest and I am not interested.

It’s true, the cpu with the auto combos does not care about meter management at all lol
Same,a lot of the other fighting games I play use a I 4 button setup. So it feels more natural to me.

Get out of here with your reasonable observations and positive attitude
Haha, maybe I’ll have a heel turn in 2025! Thanks for the comment 🙏🏾

That’s actually an incredible point! I never thought about the hurdle of playing vs modern in earlier ranks. I can absolutely see that being a hurdle.

@@pyxelpub8251excellent post with tons of insight. I wonder how Ed players adapt without cr.lk

Why no one plays marisa anymore? She has really good modern.
