A Single Man....one of Elton' most under rated albums. And this song should have been bigger than it is.

One of my favorite Elton John Albums, "A Single Man"; and a wonderful song! Thanks!

its a shame songs like this, Part Time Love, and others from this album never get played. He says he hates them but it is most certainly instead simply that that time period was a terrible one for him, after coming out and dropping in the charts. This album was better than Rock of The Westies in my opinion.

I prefer the vocals on this (would have been nice to hear them a bit more developed in the mix though) than the studio version as it's more in touch with his initial 70s voice before it started to disappear from 1978 and go into a lower-range. He seems to use different styles on his concerts (the Russia tour voice didn't work for me) and albums after 1977.
I'd like to hear a live version of 'Return To Paradise' - it has been done and is amongst collectors.

Somebody ought to cover this song just like the Elton version and make hit out of it. That'll show him that it was an excellent song. Some great piano and interesting vocals.

I'm thinking of adding a EVH type guitar to that beginning. What do u think?

This is great. I love the song, and I definitely love this. What a shame he can't stand behind his works of this period, just because sme jerks dropped him. Surely better to show ''outsiders'' what a multi-layered artist Elton is than any of the Disney stuff.

I always think of how "Madness" would have turned out with Gus Dudgeon at the helm. A good song that could have benefitted further from Gus' managing/producing of Elton in the studio. Did Gary Osborne really write all of the lyrics for this one? Elton was contributing a fair amount to the lyrical content of his songs at this time - despite credit being given to Gary. Even "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" has a lyric that is actually mostly Elton's. "Shine on Through"?

One of the weaker songs on the album. The lyrics are trite (as are most of them on "ASM" -- hiring Osbourne was one of the bad artistic decisions Elton made in the late 70's ). I mean, "madness caught up in a world gone mad"? and the music is corny and melodramatic. The "mad ending" reminds me of his version of "Give Peace a Chance" from the 80's. Interesting, at any rate...

It's heavyhanded and not very good. I skip over it on the occassion I listen to this album. But I do remember listening to it right after 9/11 and feeling like it was suddenly relevant
