An 8.1 is not an LS variant. It's a variant of the original Big Block 366, 396, 402, 427 and 454 series that goes all the way back to 1965. The big difference of the 8.1 is the firing order and the multi port fuel injection. When introduced, GM called it "The Duramax Killer" because its torque was closely matched with the early Duramax and it was only a $600 option, while the Duramax cost $7,000 plus an additional $1,000 for the Allison tranny.
The 8.1 is nothing like the original bbc none of the parts from any of the pervious big blocks for 1 everything is different. The 8.1 is reverse cooled like the mid 90's lt1 vette/Camaro and all ls engines. There is a company in California that specializes in this particle engine and gets big hp numbers. Also mercury racing uses this platform from 525hp and up Theyade very capable of 600hp with computer tuning
The 8.1 Vortec is not an “LS” variant, I don’t want to be a UA-cam nitpick but the 8.1 Vortec is a BBC, the ignition fuel delivery and controls are all it shares with the LS family of engines.
That's not an EGR on the back, that is part of your crankcase ventilation system. 8.1's don't have an EGR. if you want to remove it you will have to add a breather in the valve covers or on the oil filler cap.
@@amospgarcia9152 Yeah, that is the inlet. which goes right to the control valve, which you think is an EGR. Tell me how exhaust gas would make it into your combustion from the back of the engine. All crankcase air on a 8.1 is filtered from the main intake air filter. once it gets into your crankcase and does its thing, it has oil and such contaminants. So that valve will control the pressure and shoot any excess into the exhaust to be burned.
I have an 8.1 intake in front of me upside down and the egr runs right into the plenum. The crankcase vent goes right into the plenum to. Completely separate.
Yeah, it is EGR on the back of this one, there is a flexible pipe just under the egr valve that goes to the passenger side exhaust manifold. You can see it @ 5:13. However my 8.1 in 2005 does not have this at all.
Glad I found this. I have an '81 I'm putting an 8.1 in. It's a complete rebuild and cam upgrade. Can't wait to see the next video!

8.1 has it own head bolt pattern. That's why not much after market stuff only made from 01-09

There is also a water crossover that comes out just passenger to the intake.
Looks good - look forward to next video on this engine!
Good move captain ,I hear when you clean a chevy motor it will make 5.78 more horse power at the wheels and 3 ft/lb torque. 👍🇺🇸
I have this vortec 8.1 in my eagle 230 eliminator, could hit 80 mph if the water and my trim is spot on!!!
8.1 is based off a 454s 4.25 bore with a longer 4.37 stroke. 496 cubic inch
Youre going to want a different accessory drive system for a c10 swap. If you plan on running ac.
Just asking , I have an 8.1 that began to knock. I saved the core when I swapped. Is it worth anything ?
yes
@@DailyDriver24 what should I do with it ?
@@rickyburford2012 Assuming you don't want to find the problem, I would sell it to someone who does. One option is to ask Engine Rebuilders in ND
Do you still have it?

Where are you located? I have a K5 Blazer in Washington DC that I recently picked up a 8.1 for now I need somebody to do the swap

It is egr. 8.1 crank case ventilations is on the bottom of the intake.

Does the Tin Man have a sheet metal c0çk?
Awesome
Does anybody ever use those 3 in 1 paint roller tools for painting? Lol
