Winning Days is a great album. Way underrated...songs like Rainfall, Sun Child, Ride, title track, etc. They really should've been bigger in the states imo.
It might actually be a good thing, in a weird way, that the hype and expectation wasn't so intense for them after Winning Days. Often that kind of pressure can really affect your work, and it would seem that Craig in particular was extra-sensitive to that. The band are still popular enough to remain a full time job and commitment for them, I think.
It was a strange time. Rock was starting to get pushed aside for hip hop. Rnb and pop. It didn't kill all bands. Obviously. Like white stripes and so on. But it did leave a lot of bands that were still on the rise out to dry I think. Sadly.
@ I think there's enough space for different styles to co-exist, but in terms of the media latching onto particular trends, hip hop and R n' B definitely had their moment in the sun around that time.
Great video, and a spot on analysis. I really liked their first two LP's at the time, and I must go back and revisit their subsequent releases. 'Autumn Shade'- in all it's parts - is one of my favourite songs of all time, but especially Part I from 'Highly Evolved', and Part II from Winning Days'. The song 'Winning Days' itself really helped me overcome a severe bout of depression in 2004/05, which I will always credit Craig for unknowingly helping me with. I'm really glad that things improved for him, and he is able to continue making records and playing shows when he is up to it. Thanks for the upload.
the vines are an amazing band, each of their record has great tacks, their first two records are pure gold, but also their latest release. Even Melodia which is the worst has some good tunes. Craig continued to write music, his side project white shadows from 10 years ago is nice as well. I think the issue is fame, we should be able to enojy music without putting people on a pedestal or putting so much pressure on them, I am sorry I might never be able to hear them live but I am happy they keep on releasing new music
Turns out it wasnt them. It was the White Stripes instead. Worthy of the hype. I forgot about rhe Vines after about a month. White Stripes still get played! Great video thanks
Loved em since day 1. Fight me for saying so, but the albums just get better. Melodia is a cityscape of melody, Wicked Nature has some of the best tracks he's ever penned and Miracle Land is an ear worm that snakes the fav ladder with each listen. Currently holds slot 3 for me. And the drum tones on it. Wowza, so tasty. Really, really, really would love to hear more Craig soon :)
Saw them a few times during there first 2 us tours. Criag would break or throw his guitar and scream every song, even during the slow songs. I liked it but most of the crowd wasnt really into it. There bigday out set for the 2002 sums up the stage show. Also the lettermen show
Met Ryan Griffiths on a night out in Coogee Sydney in 2004. Was by myself having a few beers in the Coogee bay hotel before heading to a gig in the city centre to watch Sparta - Supergrass were playing at the CBH. Nice friendly guy. Had a few beers and chatted music and brought up the Nirvana comparisons lol.
love the content mate, when u drop a video I start rubbing myself off with a ceravie moisturising lotion and the squishy noise I make complements your commentary, keep up the good work.
The music press always like to write off the albums past Highly Evolved, but if they'd listen to them they'd hear amazing tracks like Dope Train, Manger, Autumn Shade 3, Future Primitive and Wicked Nature. The people who reviewed those albums never understood the influences behind them and what those tracks were trying to achieve in terms of sound.
They made one great and one very good album but sadly they never really Evolved (pun intended) beyond that sound and that was there downfall (along with Craig’s metal health falling apart ) and you are correct to call NME out who seemingly loved Craig completely spiralling out of control and at times seem to encourage it
Crap Aussie Nirvana wannabes, similar to the equally-crap Silverchair. This was around the time that the NME was desperately hyping any band that came along in the vain hope that they would magically turn out era-defining music. To this day, I'm not sure if they were cynically pushing music they knew was rubbish, or if their writers genuinely couldn't tell good music from bad. I mean, a couple of years prior to this, they tried to convince their readership that Terris (remember them) were the next big thing. I bought Highly Evolved on the strength of the rave reviews it got and, even with my tempered expectations, I was quite stunned that it wasn't even crap. It was worse than that - staggeringly mediocre. Bang-average songs produced and polished within an inch of their existence, airless sounds, plodding drums, thin "punk" guitar and weedy screaming. Oh, and crap cod-ska. I mean, listen back to "Highly Evolved", "Outtatheway", "Get Free" or "1969" - they're awful. Perhaps the antiseptic sound of the album wouldn't have been a factor if the tunes were any good, but Mr Nicholls just wasn't a particularly good songwriter. To compare him to Kurt Cobain as a writer is frankly ridiculous. They didn't have the goods to live up to the hype and the second album, and every subsequent one, predictably bombed. I quite like Autumn Shade, though.
@@liamw93 Each to their own, I guess. 'Winning Days' and 'Autumn Shade' are just a couple of other bangers... maybe you should listen again with fresh ears.

Animal machine, Amnesia and so on. The whole album is awesome.

A underrated gem!

Craig has a great ear for melodies, it's a shame they sort of got shunned away from the spotlight after their second album

Every single week during the early 00s the NME were saying that every 2 bit band was the new Nirvana!
Rediculous

Craig's 'metal' health wasn't so much a problem. His asperger's syndrome was, though. "-)
It's too bad this wasn't released on April 2nd to celebrate Autie Awareness Day.

Obviously!
There have also been numerous recent murderers that have later been shown to have Aspergers! Certainly no excuse in my eyes.
