"My job, as I see it, is to save what's left of America and to help keep up some sort of civilization somewhere or other. Ezra Pound speaking from Europe for the American heritage. F.D.R. is below the biological level at which the concept of honor enters the mind."

    RADIO ROME - July 14, 1942:
"You are in black darkness and confusion, you have been hugger-muggered and scarum-shouted into a war, and you know nothing about it. You know nothing about the forces that caused it. Or you know next to nothing. I am in the agonized position of an observer who has worked twenty-five years to prevent it, but I'm not the only observer who has so striven. Apparently no man could prevent it, that is, up to the point that it was not prevented. But a belief in destiny does not necessarily imply a belief that we have no duty; that we should not attempt to learn; that we should sit supine before an age-old evil. Given a little more knowledge, given the elimination of a small number of shysters, the war need not have happened."

    RADIO ROME - March 30, 1942:
"No one for the past 100 years had dreamed of threatening the United States of America with extinction. A damn fool or a half-hypnotized vacuum in our White House threatened Japan with starvation, sent silly school-girl notes to Mussolini and Hitler, threatened to starve the world, talked 'tosh' to the Axis powers and to Japan. The world has seen that propaganda, smelt the stink."
    --Ezra Pound
    RADIO ROME - April 16, 1942:
"For the United States to be making war on Italy and on Europe is just plain damn nonsense, and every native-born American of American stock knows that it is plain downright damn nonsense. And for this state of things Franklin Roosevelt is more than any other man responsible."
    --Ezra Pound

@DarKool8 Pounds, contribution goes much further than his writing, What about his influence on Eliot and the Wasteland? I think of him and Pound european, at least in what concerns their art and lifepathos. As a european, i dont think the actual birthplace makes much difference by both these writers when they have embedded themselves so much with classical european culture. And for what there is to Pounds' writing i think as has already been said by other users that his influence I think is beyond and not only through his writing and enormous (in european culture).

    RADIO ROME - July 22, 1942:
"Europe calling. . . . Ezra Pound speaking. I hear that my views are shared, most of them, by a large number of my compatriots, so it would seem, or maybe an increasing number of my compatriots. And there is a comforting thought on a warm day in a fine climate. I should hate to think that all America had gone haywire. I should like to feel that the American race in North America, in the North American continent, had some wish toward survival. That they wanted there to be a United States of tomorrow. . . .
Well, you have been fed on lies, for 20 years you have been fed on lies, and I don't say maybe. And Mr. Squirmy and Mr. Slime are still feeding it to you right over the BBC radio, and every one of the Jew radios of Schenectady, New York, and Boston - and Boston was once an American city; that was when it was about the size of Rapallo. . . .
And how much liberty have you got anyhow? And as to the arsenal - are you the arsenal of democracy or of judeocracy? And who rules your rulers? Where does public responsibility end and what races can mix in America without ruin of the American stock, the American brain? Who is organized? What say have you in the choice of your rulers? What control of their policy? And who does own most of your press and your radio? E.P. asking you."
    --Ezra Pound
    RADIO ROME - May 4, 1943:
"What are you doing in the war at all? What are you doing in Africa? Who amongst you has the nerve or the sense to do something that would be conducive to getting you out of it before you are mortgaged up to the neck and over it? Every day of war is a dead day as well as a death day. More death, more future servitude, less and less of American liberty of any variety."
    --Ezra Pound
    RADIO ROME - May 8, 1943:
"There is not one ounce or atom of honesty in either Churchill or Roosevelt. Most of the reasons for England and America being in the war are unconfessable and indecent. . . . A clean England and a clean United States might collaborate in a new world, but it will take a hell of a lot of Sapolio to wash off the mess made by Roosevelt and Churchill. I'm telling you, I'm not giving you the Axis point of view."
    --Ezra Pound

"The day Hitler went into Russia, England had her chance to pull out. She had her chance to say 'Let bygones be bygones. If you stop this Muscovite order, we will let bygones be bygones. We will try to see at least half of your argument.' Instead of which Hank Wallace comes up saying no peace till the world accepts the gold standard. . . . Whom God would destroy He first sends to the bughouse."

+nozecone Probably so, but in that case he would have went to his death like a man and full of pride, but with righteous arrogance for his captors. Ezra Pound: A REAL MAN, as well as full of intellectual courage. He is my greatest historical hero. Hail the Internation Third Position, and hail Fascism. Have reverence for the sacred symbol of the fasces - that bundle of sticks bound together with rope to represent strength in unity, with the axe blade placed on top to smite our foes. What the hell man. Haven't you ever wanted to become unbrainwashed and join the winning team? That of IMPERIUM EUROPA, which will take Europe by storm someday, led by Norman Lowell and possibly the very radical Finnish revolutionary Kai Murros. If they led the fight, Europe's streets would be awash in blood. This blood would be a cleansing process. Europe is so sacred it must be saved by any means necessary. All non-whites OUT! The spirit of Rudolf Hess marches by our side. I doubt any mercy will be shown this time though whenever real chaos is provoked by the coloreds over there. And I imagine even whites who betray their own kind will just be immediately hanged from the nearest lamp posts. All Jewish banking assets would need to be seized without compensation, and all the TV stations they own will be TAKEN! No compensation! They may be put on a boat to Israel, but that big boat might just have a leak in the hull and the sharks will have a nice little lunch that day. RIVERS OF BLOOD. DEPOPULATION. Even the ecosystem needs this. Animal Liberation, Human Annihilation must be our watchword.

According to Eustace Mullins, Ezra Pound's final protege, "fascist" is derived from the Roman fasces or rods bound together (which is where people confuse it with people uniting) in English, which signified the Law of Rome, where the jurist punishes the wrong doer. A certain type of people at the time had their own laws and hated the Romans, so we find those same people in the 20th Century using the word fascist as a smear or derogatory term.

    RADIO ROME - March 15, 1942:
"Parlando da Roma. Ezra Pound speaking from Rome. Parlando da Roma. . . . It is an outrage that any clean lad from the country - I suppose that there are a few English lads from the country - it is an outrage that any clean lad from the country or any nice young man from the suburbs should be expected to die for Victor Sassoon. It is an outrage that even a drunken footman's by-blow should be asked to die for Sassoon.
As to your Empire, it was not always won by clean fighting; but however you got it, you did for a time more or less justify keeping it on the ground that you exported good government, or better government than the natives would have had without England. But you let in the Jew and the Jew rotted your Empire, and you yourselves outjewed the Jew. Your allies in your victimized holdings are the bunya, that is, the money lender. You stand for usury, and above metal usury you have built up bank usury, 60 percent as against 30 and 40 percent, and by that you will not be saved. . . .
Was it an instinct to save the butt end of the race by not fighting? Is there 'a race' left in England? Has it any will left to survive? You can carry slaughter to Ireland, but will that save you? I doubt it. Nothing can save you, save a purge. Nothing can save you, save an affirmation that you are English.
Hore-Belisha is not. Isaacs is not. No Sassoon is an Englishman racially. No Rothschild is English, no Streiker is English, no Roosevelt is English, no Baruch, Morgenthau, Cohen, Lehman, Warburg, Kuhn, Kahn, Schiff, Sieff or Solomon was ever yet born Anglo-Saxon. And it is for this filth that you fight. It is for this filth that you have murdered your Empire. It is this filth that elects, selects, elects your politicians."

You've every right to your opinion on Pound's poetry, I just think we in the anglophone world should put his influence into a global perspective. It's not simply because I'm Irish that I defend Joyce. His work has been described by French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Latin American critics as the most influential of the 20th century. Pound is barely rated in the literatures of these languages.

He was like a literary impresario, but the crowds don't flock to see the impresario: and there is no way he was more influential than Joyce, who buried the 19th century novel. The French and Germans don't give a toss about Pound, btw, but they all know the Irishman. And where one is born does make a difference. I don't believe in writers that have a louder bark than their bite. This man was a racist, anti-semitic, traitor to his country, and a literary poseur whose reputation, thankfully, is now shot! Everyone's heard of him (because he rubbed shoulders with far greater writers than himself), but no one reads him.

I think his poetry is crap most poetry is crap Seamus Heaney who wrote my favorite poem in lyric and word , I was not happy to see most of his work is crap. But when you dig through the dirt long enough you find a jem, and poetry does have its Jems when they cut a broad swath and are not confined to time or man. But anyway I like Ezra Pounds method to writing his Cantos ( and I am going off my head so be gentle with your critic) was done through his life never the finished product ( as it is crap as he lays dying) but I admire how he constantly refined, pruned, and ploughed.

Pound also wrote what are called the Fascist Cantos. In these he took joy in an incident that Canadian soldiers were trapped and murdered. They are horrible to read. He was anti-Semitic, deeply so. He realized that as a human being he had failed. His political views were bizarre, simplistic and childish. His father, no one he knew benefited from credit? He knew no one who used a bank? The US (indeed the world) economy recovered because of it. You cant feel much sympathy. Much as I like and love his work and it's significance I can understand he could well have been executed. He did have a point re WWI as his friends were killed in it. There is a longer version of this documentary. A sad case. His Cantos needed to move from the tendentious to a kind of universalism: he could have opposed war as Russell did and others. He also praised the killing of Jews, broadcasting: "See! You Jews (in the US) are next!" Even after leaving the hospital he gave the Nazi salute. A sad, pathetic end. Like that perhaps of Celine, or Hamsun. Meanwhile millions dead and he did nothing to stop or ameliorate that. He needed to work in some neutral place. And he did great work, his project, economics and childish politics aside, was great also. He got diverted into the abys, the fosse.

As great a crime as hiroshima was, it pales in comparison to the Wannsee agreement. Who said I enjoy the Wasteland? And For whom the bell tolls is a very flawed book. Besides, I'm European, I don't have your Amerocentric bias. Joyce, Beckett, and Proust wipe the floor with Pound and all his yanky cohorts - who of course didn't begin modernism, they came to Europe and discovered it.

    --Ezra Pound
