In this video I will present three works by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, all well known and much loved, which belong to the golden phase of the artist or to that phase characterized by the very abundant use of the gold color and also of the leaf of d ' gold or thin metal sheets applied to the canvas. The paintings are: Judith I, The Kiss and the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer.
There is therefore a first very precise fact in the paintings that I will show you, the presence of gold which naturally has a decorative function, but which also brings with it the suggestion of something precious, unique, of great value. This aspect necessarily influences our perception of the paintings and also the very meaning of the works. In a portrait, for example, in the video I will present that of Adele Bloch Bauer, the conspicuous presence of gold also embellishes the content or the subject, in this case the woman represented. In the same way in the Kiss, another painting that I will show you, the embrace of the two lovers is embellished with gold decorations to the point of almost making us lose sight of the action itself: the kiss becomes in itself more precious immersed in this waterfall. , in this golden aura that surrounds him. The presence of gold therefore acts on our perception of the content of the painting.
Klimt had studied Applied Arts in the School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna. His father in turn had been a goldsmith and decorator. After a very successful career start linked to the decoration of public spaces such as the Burgtheater in Vienna, where the pictorial style was still linked to academicism, Klimt will become one of the leading personalities of the Viennese Secession of which he will be founder and first president in 1897 The Secession in Vienna intercepts a spirit of renewal of art that was spreading in Europe and which has one of its most important elements in the encounter between arts and crafts. This idea of ​​art renewal will take different names in various countries: Art Noveau, Secession, Jugendstil, Liberty etc.
However, the term Secession is misleading. Klimt is never revolutionary, he never breaks completely with tradition. Klimt has been called a "conservative revolutionary" and it seems to me an appropriate definition.
Klimt goes beyond the academic style that characterized the first commissions, and opens up to a two-dimensional decorative painting that coexists with the naturalism of the figures, but never goes beyond the limits. He never comes to a position of total rupture, rather, as a Viennese, he seems to grasp the decline of the Habsburg Empire and describes it from the inside. Klimt is the singer of a golden decline that survives in the aesthetics of forms. An aesthetic decline that absorbs symbolist suggestions in some themes such as that of the fatal woman that we will see in the Judith. According to the always enlightening art historian Federico Zeri, Klimt captures in his glittering works "the cheerful decadence" that represented the essence of Vienna at the turn of the century.

Klimt è uno degli artisti che preferisco per l'unicità del suo stile (ma chi non lo è tra i grandi) e la sua inventiva materica. Molto interessante l'analisi di Giuditta e Il bacio dove il tema del rapporto uomo-donna e essere umano-natura è centrale e affrontato con un approccio filosofico-sociale.

Ecco che i dipinti dorati di Klimt ci abbagliano di luce quasi a confonderci. Le figure non solo vengono arricchite e impreziosite dall'oro ma l'artista supera il mero intento decorativo lasciando risplendere il volto di Adele come in un sogno di bellezza e gioventù. A ciò si erge a contrasto l'aspetto esile e rigido del corpo come fosse esso stesso un elemento brillante e geometrico ma che diventa in realtà un'allusione alla caducità dell'esistenza. La preziosità dei dipinti dove appare l'oro è una componente del valore.. Genio, bravura, grande tecnica si uniscono nel determinare il valore stesso. Giuditta, altera, splendente,. il ritratto della signora, sempre la stessa modella, circondata, immersa nell'oro, una dea, così antica, così attuale,. E il bacio. Celebre, innovativo, passionale ed evocativo. Tutto riconducibile con grande intuito alla fine dell'impero..

Grazie per questo prezioso video! Espone numerose informazioni su Klimt che non conoscevo. Il dipinto che preferisco è senza dubbio il Ritratto di Adele Bloch-Bauer soprattutto per la sua storia: una delle tante opere d’arte confiscate durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Ho una piccola domanda: è quindi possibile stendere colore ad olio su foglia d’oro? Ed inoltre suggerisco un’idea per un possibile altro video: presentare tre o quattro opere che non è più possibile ammirare in nessun museo perchè irrimediabilmente distrutte o rubate. Grazie ancora

Non conosco bene la foglia d’oro ma mi pare un materiale decorativo per alcune zone del quadro e che quindi non va dipinta. Interessante l’idea del video delle opere distrutte o rubate. Solo di Klimt purtroppo ne sono andate bruciate diverse

Tutte opere molto belle, la mia preferita è il ritratto di Adele Bloch Bauer. Il bacio, altrettanto bella , ma forse il surplus di riproduzioni in ogni dove, hanno creato, almeno per me, una assuefazione che non rende merito al quadro. Sono d'accordo con un commento che precede in cui si chiede un video sui paesaggi. Grazie sempre utili ed esaustive le sue spiegazioni.
