  • Sharing the technique for collimating a Schmidt-Cassegrain astronomical telescope - model Celestron C8 in two stages - daytime using a home-made collimating tool and by night using a bright star. If a telescope such as this is carefully stored and handled collimation, is an infrequent exercise, however it is always useful to know how. Written article coming shortly. #CollimatingCelestronC8 #CollimatingTelescopebyDayandNight

This is GENIUS and just what i needed today to get a head start before the stars came out and it gets really cold. I could do this from the warm and cosy indoors to get a head start. I found there are at least two sizes of camera film case. One was too big and one slightly too small. I used the slightly too small one with 4 pieces of electrical tape on the outside (abut 5mm each). Each was at 90 degrees to each other. This ensured it was a nice snug fit and kept it central.
Once again, thank you very much.

Hi Chrys, I'm so glad you've found this video useful. It's great to get feedback and your comment is really appreciated. Hope you've got clear, dark skies where you are, I've just been putting the animals away and the sky is clear so I'll be having a look myself. Once again many thanks for watching and commenting, best wishes from Normandie, Andy.

The Cheshire Ep should be in the diagonal to compensate for the Ep tilt later once tightened. The method you used is perfect for astrophotography

For the C8 and all Schmidt Cassegrains you only need the collimation cap (the film canister with the hole in). I'd never thought of using it in the diagonal. Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it. Cheers, Andy.

I have to disassemble my C8 to clean it. It is exactly like yours.
So this will definitely help when I get it together.
I think it is hilarious that I have easier access to chickens, then I do film canisters.
Being said, will the chickens help? Hahaha.

Hi there, thanks for your comment, I know that you can buy the canisters on ebay or amazon, but not the chickens. Before you start your project, have a look at this exercise undertaken by a C8 owner, I found there were useful tips in it. www.cloudynights.com/topic/559380-celestron-orange-tube-1975-c8-cleaning-and-refurbish/ Hope this is of help, good luck with the project. Best Wishes from Normandie, Andy.

The Dark Outer Rim....this would be a great name for the new Pink Floyd album. Slightly Eccentric Doughnut could be the title track 😁

Hi DH, sorry for my tardiness in replying, but have had serious computer problems and I'm still trying to catch up! Love the suggestion, why not make it the title of your album of Floyd's covers? I've just listened to your 12 year old cover of Satriani's masterpiece and I'm seriously impressed. Still I don't suppose you'll want to 'meddle' with their works or maybe 'one of these days' you might. The astronomy is fine as long as the sky is not 'obscured by clouds'. You never know you may make some serious 'money'. Thanks for watching and commenting I really do appreciate it. Best Wishes from a stormy Normandie, Andy.

I have a Vintage Celestron C8 like yours I just inherited and I think my primary mirror is crooked. There is a tube inside coming out from the primary (I assume for glares) and when I look through the eyepiece hole without the eyepiece I can see in the reflection that it is crooked and the entire reflection seems to be crooked. Is it possible to move the primary mirrors? on a side note I have a Collimating eyepiece I got with it and Trying to use it I am a little confused. So it had a large hole in the side with a 45 degree orange peal style reflector on it. Am I supposed to let light go in the hole?

Hi there, have you tried using the 'scope yet to see how good/bad the image is? I would have said that it is very unlikely that the primary mirror has shifted. The tube you can see coming out of the primary is the baffle tube used to cut out stray light from a bright source to the side of the object you are observing. When you look down from the the front end of the telescope, how does the primary/baffle tube look?
The collimating device you describe is known as a Cheshire Collimator and there are plenty of articles /videos on how to use one. I've only ever used the film canister technique so am unable yo comment on the Cheshire device.
To give as much help as I can, here are some links you may find useful:
      neffj.people.cofc.edu/WWW/observatory/IntroLabs/celestron_manual.pdf (The owner's manual for a C8)
      www.cloudynights.com/topic/559380-celestron-orange-tube-1975-c8-cleaning-and-refurbish/ (for a blow-by-blow description of a complete C8 rebuild).
www.cloudynights.com/topic/402734-celestron-c8-registry/ (to determine the year of manufacture of your C8)
You're very lucky to have inherited this scope, I've had mine for over 25 years and I bought it second hand. I've found out it was manufactured in early 1982.
I hope this helps, if you need any more information, get back in touch. Meanwhile, good luck with getting the 'scope back in operation. Cheers, Andy.

Normalement, si l'on manipule l'instrument avec précaution, il ne doit pas se dérégler (se décollimater).

I have a celestron super c8. I got it from my grandfather. When I look through the 16mm eyepiece, i see all white. I can’t see anything. Does this mean it need collimating?

    • @Organikmechanic
      @Organikmechanic  2 роки тому

Hi Cliff, Hmmm, that sounds strange. What were you trying to look at? Do you have any other eyepieces and if so do you get the same result? Are you trying the 'scope out in daylight, which is a good way to get used to the instrument. Have you put the star diagonal in the tailpiece adaptor and then inserted the eyepiece? Let me know and I'll try to help, at the moment in sounds more like you're not achieving a focus rather than bad alignment.
      Cheers, Andy.

Hi there, Love the little gadget you made for collimating your scope. Unfortunately I have no idea where I would be able to buy one that came from a company. Do you have any suggestions? As some of the ones I saw were for Newtonians.

@@Organikmechanic ahh yes i like that rooster, speaking of roosters the funny thing lately where im living in the city i been hearing a rooster crowing in the morning and lately at all times of the day,,i think some chap in the building across has it for a pet or some kind, im surprised no one has complained yet or if he is even allowed to have one

@@ARCSTREAMS I know that people do keep roosters and sometimes hens in apartments, they are smart enough to learn how to use a litter tray so no surprises on the carpets! The animals/ livestock around us means that we get all kinds of animal noises, besides our own eg other poultry, donkeys and cattle, I prefer it to the noise from the road at the end of our lane. Cheers Andy
