Stargate Universe had so much potential and had great two seasons.... It's a shame these guys at MGM cancelled that show. I had never followed other formats of Stargate, but Universe was something great. Grown up, serious, often sinister, almost like dark romanticism, no clear stock characters... it was wonderful. Really, really sad. I was really depressed when I saw they cancelled it...
I watched an interview with Brad Wright and he said that the cancellation of SGU was like the perfect storm for a cancellation. The Sci Fi Channel ordered 2 seasons of SGU (which was unusual because normally a show is ordered one season at a time). Into the 2nd Season the Sci Fi Channel expressed an interest in a 3rd Season of SGU, unfortunately MGM was going through bankruptcy and all of the people that the Sci Fi Channel had spoken to two years earlier were no longer there. There was simply no one still around and the show had not been performing as well as MGM was expecting it to. So MGM cancelled it, but expressed an interest in one or more tie off movies because the series finale had already been written and another cliff hanger was planned. But when the Stargate Trilogy movie was conceived, MGM cancelled the SGU Movies in favor of the Trilogy. Brad Wright did confirm that there would be more Stargate and the previous shows would be 'Recognized' not honored but recognized. There were also supposed to be a series of SGU Comic Books released, but those were stopped after only 6 issues. The SGU Comic books were selling well, so it wasn't stopped due to lack of demand. I am hoping that this means we might be seeing more SGU some time in the future.
The way I see it, by the end of season 2, the SGU writers had finally gotten to the point where they could really begin to tell some amazing stories! And it's terrible that we never did it will get those stories! They had done all of the character building, and establishing such a rich & details set of contexts, and of course learning to survive and basically communicate & get along; as well as gaining some control over the ship... It's a real shame!
I wish I watched this day one but I was a bit upset they changed up the formula . Ten years later n seeing it, all I got to say is why did they cancel after 2 seasons . 2nd season was opening up so many pathways .
It's really great to hear that you finally came around and have been able to truly enjoy it and see it for what it is despite how different (in some ways) it is from the other two preceding series... I been seeing and hearing quite a bit of that over the last 4-5 years; which is nice...

Yeah, you know what is 'really' funny? That you took just one expression from my comment to pick on. SG was worn out, the Stargate Franchise was at its end & SGU was an attempt to change fossilized characters and plots... But well, everyone has a different opinion. I personally liked SGU because it was unlike its predecessors; not because it was aimed at 'teens'. Furthermore you mix up the target group and characteristics of the show itself. Anyway, good everyone has a different taste.
I can't understand why anyone would believe that SGU was specifically geared towards teens! That's just ridiculous and clearly not true! And I don't believe there were ANY characters or actors in the series that were teens... I do believe that they were going to attract new fans. Ive been a stargate fan from the first movie but the one thing they did wrong with universe was makingnthe first 4 episodes crap . We want action not looking for air and water . Then atlantis ( best by far ) was cancelled , bastards ! Bring back stargate !!
So... what happened?! After hearing the introduction to the cast you'd have a hard time believing that the show could've been cancelled just a few short months later! I think the real answer is rooted in the bankruptcy of MGM and the deep financial troubles at SyFy as opposed to the reasons provided after the fact about failing ratings. BUT the extent to which the ratings problem was real/true is to a HUGE extent the direct result of terrible decisions made at SyFy to repeatedly change the time of the show's weekly time slot (not to mention multiple last minute changes in airing time which were VERY poorly advertised!) as well as the decision to split up the seasons into smaller chunks (giving fans too long to forget about and lose interest in the show). There was also some major discrepancies in how the ratings were collected/measured/counted; On-Demand views were apparently counted as repeat views, TiVO or DVR recorded views were not counted at all, and probably most importantly: there was not even any way for them to account for all the fans who (like myself) had grown weary of the changing time slots and post-poned airings (due to wrestling broadcasts running over) and who had begun watching the show on unofficial streaming services (which became available even before On-Demand) or via torrents which were available almost immediately. The popularity of those sources was easy to assess based on the number servers hosting streams and the number of users seeding the torrents―all of which reflected a high degree of popularity and availability! The sum of all these factors makes it seem as though SyFy actually wanted the series to fail and was doing whatever they could to find and even create excuses for why it should be cancelled! I think that the biggest mistake by the producers/creators/writers was the secrecy leading up to the premiere of the series. They REALLY should have introduced curiosity, mystery and questioning about the 9th chevron and its purpose, etc. into the consciousness of the fans!!! Even just a few little comments and questions on the topic could have been inserted into dialogue on SG Atlantis and that would have been sufficient to generate interest and conversation―even if it wasn't revealed until watching the pilot that the series had anything to do with that. They also should have been quicker to somehow introduce more about the ship earlier on―information about Destiny's purpose and creation, and more about the Ancients in general would have brought some welcome positivity, altruism and "light" to the series. I found the characters very plausible in the context of the circumstances! They were certainly flawed and often unlikable, especially early on, but they were very realistic, believable and plausible―and the actors gave stellar performances! The shaky camera, obstructed and bizarre perspectives were very annoying, utterly stupid and totally unnecessary though―and didn't even make any sense although they were supposed to be from the kinos because the kinos were always shown to fly in very smooth and stable trajectories, and given how they were depicted as being able to support a huge amount of weight (when used to transport ice through the gate) and that they had night vision it made NO sense that they would have been responsible for all those awful, dark and obscure angles.
EXACTLY!! Well said! I'm not a sci-fi fan, but just watched SGU due to Robert Carlyle being in it. Absolutely loved it and couldn't t understand why they'd cancel it. I researched it and read about things you mentioned, but you encapsulated it all in one place. What a missed opportunity! Really wished they'd have been able to continue, even just one more season to attempt to wrap up some of the story.

Nicholas Rush was certainly one of the most important characters of the series, probably THE most important; and Robert Carlyle was just as much an absolutely crucial member of the cast. His talent & dedication really brings the best performances out of the other actors as well. I'm still very upset that we didn't get more stories from the Destiny, or even some closure and resolution of the cliff-hanger they left us with. Sadly, it seems that Amazon is not especially interested in doing anything with this IP; and even worse: they apparently don't want to keep Brad Wright at the helm of the franchise. I fear that is going to be a terrible mistake...
I love Stargate I really do. But the Stargate brand is in NO way rivalling the Star Trek brand, which aside from having 5 live action shows and eleven feature films, the most recent of which was a huge box office hit. Let alone Star Wars, which dear god, even Trek has trouble keeping up with it.

Star Gate Universe was an awful attempt to make Star Gate more gritty like the crappy remake of Battlestar Galactica!Now it seems that Star Trek Discovery is attempting to this same crappy re-envisioning of that show!
That simply is not true (SGA cancelled for SGU). And that has been established & proven SO long ago! You've been so far out of the loop for so long, I can't help but snicker... Just because you don't know that for some reason or you don't accept that doesn't change history! LOL To claim that SGU "sucked" is silly and absurd, and it's a really lazy criticism! Of all the stargate tv series, SGU had the most amazing, beautiful, unique & extensive sets, the best visual effects, the most diverse & emotive score, many of the best actors and performances of the franchise, as well as a number of the most creative & engaging stories. You don't have to like it, and obviously you don't. It's not for everyone... Nothing is! But I do find it ather amusing and pathetic that you clearly do not grasp the difference between your personal tastes/preferences and the level of quality of a product.

Just saying all the people who supported SGU still didn't make the show get a third season and that season 1 was really that great for those who watched it and many said season 2 is where the show hit it stride. But i never watched season 2 so i can't really understand if that is true or not. If you are comparing cast member between SGA and Sg1 to SGU then i would disagree since sgu was filled with new cast who weren't as famous or as interesting in my view. And at least sg1 and sga had year for the cast to get better as a show. All the sets, visual effect, music don't make a show great, just improve it. Key is the cast and the cast of SGU never got me to like them. May be due to SGA issue but still i found the show boring, and tons of other people did too, hence the show SGU was cancelled so quickly.
