    Absolutely embarrassing. I'm 16 years old and I think George Washington is one of, if not the greatest leader of all time.

    Washington is my favorite President. This is so depressing.
    The man tried to free his slaves but Virginia was a difficult state to work with. Even in death, it was his will that they'd be free, but the state wouldn't allow it for many since his wife was alive. Could he have fought more for abolition? Yeah. Anybody can always do more. But he was a respected man worldwide.

      Carlos Rodriguez am not sure Washington can use the law as an excuse. I think there were also laws against mounting an armed rebellion.

      @OokinaChungus 6 років тому +3

      silly sailor Well, to be fair, America was kinda tired of war after the Revolution- the small Shay's Rebellion terrified them so much they tossed the Articles of Confederation. An attempted rebellion by anyone to abolish slavery would have cemented support for slavery, with abolitionists viewed as the villain. That's why it was illegal to release slaves, even inherited ones, in Virginia, where Washington and Jefferson lived (and no, they couldn't just move and do it-they'd have to sell the slaves if they moved to a free state)-people feared a slave revolt more than anything, as slaves outnumbered freed men in most slave states.
      To put it in context for you, Thomas Jefferson put forth a law in the Virginia congress to allow slaves to be freed as he wanted to free his slaves-that was illegal. It failed by just one vote, despite Jefferson's best efforts, as the people feared a rebellion by slaves like you propose. While people vilify Washington and Jefferson as rich white slave owners, the Founding Fathers that are remembered were all anti-slavery, which speaks to our country's nature.

    • @flintfredstone228
      @flintfredstone228 6 років тому +1

      Also, just cause you own slaves does not mean you starve them, beat them, rape them, and work them to death. The concept of owning another person does not seem crazy (kids are your belongings), but if you assault that person and keep them without basic necessities then it becomes messed up.

    • @CarlosRodriguez-dh7mm
      @CarlosRodriguez-dh7mm 6 років тому +3

      silly sailor Freeing them regardless of the law would have been worse for these slaves. They would have likely been found and sold to a less humane owner. It had to be done legally; if not, living in the Washington estate was their next best option.

    • @flintfredstone228
      @flintfredstone228 6 років тому

      I'm saying that people say all the time when they bring up slavery that "owning another person is unthinkable". People own kids, this is 'thinkable'. Your kids are your possessions. If they run away, the cops will return them. If you tell them they cannot do something, they cannot do it, and you are allowed to punish them if they disobey you.
      Now, I know this is NOT an equivalent to 18th century slavery, it is more like indentured servitude. You belong to someone for a set amount of time. When that time expires, you are free to go. Being a slave, you could never know if you would be released or not. If a person wants to sell themselves into that, go for it. Slaves did not have a choice.

    What I heard one girl say is history isn't important anymore. This I why we are repeating mistakes of the past and a lot of people don't see it. It's just happening in a different way. There is a pattern of swinging from one side of the pendulum to the other. That is why history is important.

      Piet Andersen being prepared for a war doesn't hurt. Being prepared for a disaster doesn't mean you want it to happen. Does insurance mean you intend to crash your vehicle or get cancer etc? Rainy day and all that. Same as w firearms - tou don't necessarily think you'll need to use it, but fuck not having it should the need arise.
      So what exactly is the difference here? Is it because the fringes are racist and therefore we need to be bound by their perspectives in some respect?

    What a Sad state of the country we live in. Slavery was normal worldwide in the 1700s. Yes the past is filled with evil and horrible Acts that were committed. But we got rid of it. I would say that his contributions to the country far surpasses him owning slaves which was considered a worldwide Norm for that time.

  • @koyettsu
    @koyettsu 6 років тому

    The problem is most children today aren't taught actual historical facts. Such as, George Washington advocated the end of slavery, he was one of the first in his age. He attempted to release his slaves, but in Virginia it was actually against the law for him to do so. The only options available to him were to release them at death, so he paid them while they were alive. At his death bed, left a fortune to his slaves, he had purchased them land so that they could start a life of freedom that he had wanted for them in life.
    Another fact most people are not taught, Thomas Jefferson has not been proven to have slept with his slaves. The guy that did the DNA testing has flat out said the information spread about this is not true. There are familial similarities but more likely from his brother, there was a very quiet media retraction after they spread the nonsense around to begin with. Jefferson also was against slavery, his former slaves founded a country and named a city after Thomas Jefferson.

    Suggestion: give the interviewees a list of Washington’s accomplishments; the number of battles he fought in is truly amazing. He risked his neck many, many times for this country’s freedom.
    Then, ask them what THEY have contributed to thIs country; …likely nothing. As unaccomplished do-nothings, how do they figure their opinion carries weight against someone whose accomplishments they will never come close to matching.

    Martin Luther King Jr. promoted & provoked violence at the beginning of his political career. Should we tear down all of his statues as well? Can we just appreciate someone's accomplishments for once instead of renouncing them for their sins? I could go and vandalise MLK statues in the name of all of the people he harmed or I could celebrate the non-violent movements he popularised. I choose the latter, because A) tearing down history is stupid, and B) As MLK said, hate cannot drive out hate.

    The comments on this section are about as bad as comments in the video.
    Listen George Washington owned slaves. that was bad. Period. However the subject is gray since he was a product of a time where abolishing slavery wasn’t even a clear option. He did personally tried to do his part to free his slaves.
    Now you take someone like Robert E. Lee. You can’t use the same reasoning. There was a paradigm shift in his time where many agreed slavery was bad, and African slaves deserved freedom. REL didn’t agree with that and fought with many other to keep slaves. The country was thrown into civil war because some states wanted to secede from the Union to keep slavery active.
    In context, it’s much less ambiguous to discuss renaming a building or toppling statues for people that fought FOR slavery than those that were less disposed to brake the wheel.
    Not to mention most confederate monuments were erected way pass the civil war. These types of monuments don’t really celebrate history as much as they want to “honor” people that shouldn’t. To be fair REL didn’t even want a statue himself.

    let he who is without sin, cast the first stone. history can't change what it did, or didn't do for that matter. it is what it is. it was a different time with different norms and traditions,
    you can't judge the past by today's ideology or morals, today's standards are so far from where they were its crazy, but thats progression, with each new generation things change
    both in law and in society in general. mostly for the good, developement of people takes generations. if you want to ban everything that doesn't comply to todays moral and social standards,
    then you start burning a lot of books destroying a lot of art, re-write and denounce anything pretty much in history. lets rename everything that doesn't hold up to today's standards.
    yes he was a slave owner, but back then that was the norm that was the standard, over time we learnt it was morally wrong and those same men and those that followed changed things. s
    o you could have the future you have today. at least be grateful for that. put it this way to make it personal to you. in your life you have had many choices many left turns and many right turns, you have done good things you have done bad things, we all have , that's how we learn. all your success and all your failures all the hard knocks have made you the person you are today, without learning from your mistakes you learn nothing,. George Washington was a great man, ain't nobody said he was perfect.

      Ligerpride You guys build a confederate statue (which as far as I know is an enemy of US) in public place, even fighting for it when someone tried to take it down.

    • @Ligerpride
      @Ligerpride 6 років тому

      Farhan Ihram - I did no such thing, I'm not even American, but taking your point as read I'd say as follows. The Confederacy was something which certain States fought to bring into being, who is to say that they were wrong in wanting to secede from the United States? It was only the weight of numbers which forced them into submission of staying in the Union, why is that the just outcome? They were effectively not granted the freedom to enter the form of governance that they had determined they wanted, hardly something to celebrate.
      If certain people fought for the rights of Southerners, or certain states then why is that a bad thing? People can move on from wanting to break free of the Union while still celebrating historical figures who were prepared to fight for the status of those from the same state (and similar states) as them. If you look at the voting patterns in the United States there is still a clear divide between how classic Yankee states vote versus the rest of the country.
