  • The largest known gathering of Fokker Dr.1 triplanes powered by original rotary engines since World War 1 occurred at the Golden Age Air Museum in Bethel, PA on September 3 & 4. Three rotary powered triplanes were in attendance as well as the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome's rotary powered Sopwith Pup replica.

Strap a giant gyroscope on the front of your airplane. LOL, I laughed so hard it brought tears to my eyes. m

“As a flight commander with Jagdstaffel 15, he [Udet] had once gone alone on a balloon bursting expedition, only to find himself alone in a dogfight with another lone machine. As they looped, dived and circled, looking for an opening, Udet read the words “Vieux Charles” painted on the enemy fighter. He knew he was fighting Guynemer, the French ace.
During the combat, Udet’s guns jammed. Seeing this the Frenchman flew over Udet inverted - and waved to him before flying away.”
    - Len Deighton’s FIGHTER.

Chris Hill, Excellent interview, and even better event... So happy I got to attend. I hope you and The Golden Age Museum can make this happen again next year! Tailwinds.

I think it was Kermit Weeks that said the pilots wore the scarves so they had something to wipe the caster oil off of their Google's and stuff. Those engine were total loss oiling, the caster oil got everywhere and on everything!

He did. I’ve also heard that your head was on a swivel so much that the part around your neck kept it from chafing

My father knew the folks at Golden Age/Grimes and Old Rhinbeck well and loved his involvement in that community of aviators. I won't forget the time we flew into Grimes together around the time I soloed our biplane. He would be so please to see this news and interview.

He's readying up to fly a plane in it's historical configuration (rotary engine), well known for it's unforgiving nature.
      All for our viewing pleasure.
I think we can let Foe-kerrr slide lol

A powerless Dr. 1 has better flight characteristics than a 747....... Says my father who once landed a powerless 747.... Successfully. But i do not think he ever flew a Dr. 1.

Don't forget your burning the oil as well as gas; and you could run out of both...
