This is my second Street Photography Challenge: A night in Mexico City
I didn’t expect it street photography in low-light situation would be a difficult as it was. But I think everything becomes more difficult when taking pictures at night. Everything from editing, to exposure, dealing with the high ISO and nailing focus - everything gets more difficult at night, especially when it comes to street photography at night. I filmed this with a GoPro and the Fujifilm X-T3 with the 1.2 56mm lens, in the night, in Mexico City.
The low-light performance of the Fuji X-T3 is actually pretty good I think and with the 1.2 56mm Fujinon lens, it becomes a bit easier to keep the ISO at a decent level with doing night street photography.
If you have any ideas for what street photography challenge, I should do next, let me know here :) Thanks for watching!
The camera I used in the videos: geni.us/TheFujiX-T3 & the lens: geni.us/FujiPortraitLens
I would suggest a shoot in one of the colorful markets.
You could do a shoot in the subway.
You could focus on street performers.
Cute kids hanging around while their parents are working.
Got it :) my latest video hit 7 min!
Good ideas! Thanks! Noted!
Les métiers de la rue....les façades des magasins....les travailleurs du petit matin....
An iPhone or phone camera challenge!
Street photography at night. But 1st, "TACOS" 👍
Priorities!
Hey the next time you do a night streetphoto vlog could you layer the settings that were used e.g. 50mm f2, SS1600, ISO 1200. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, I'll add that going forward! :)
Why?
I love your work so much, please keep posting!!! I can't stop watching, your videos are amazing and you have helped me grow as a photographer providing me with so much knowledge. Thank you so much !!!
Thanks a lot mate! Don’t worry. I’ll keep posting :)
Street photography at night is particularly difficult. I think it helps to accept that your photos are going to have deep shadows and some noise, and focus on finding good artificial light sources on the street to use to illuminate your subjects.
Yeah. I think it's a lot of playing with light. But yes. Everything becomes more difficult at night. Focus, noise, editing etc.
These photos are so beautiful... really captures the city’s aura
Amazing photos
Thanks!
what the hell? i wouldn't expect you of all channels to like something like this. I really like your videos btw ^^
Please can you add camera sitting for each photo. Its helpful for us to learn more
The photo at 2:01 it’s amazing I can see it frame and hanging in my living room .. really enjoy your work .
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it! :)
@@FTrovatten How much did you crop it?
@@photonmx Not much actually.
Excellent work once again my friend. I always enjoy your journeys.
Thanks mate!
I very much enjoyed this video. I also have an x100F, and was contemplating picking up an X-T3. Please continue with the good work!
Interesantísimo ver esta ciudad a través de tus ojos! You made me want to take my Fujifilm camera and go out at night for some fun!
edmendoza photography Thanks is good to hehe! Have fun shooting!
Awesome! So many incredible photos!
Thank Katharina :)
love your way you talk with people
Beautiful video, but I would love to have seen your photo settings. The only reason I found your channel was looking for night street shooting with X-T3 hoping to learn from you and by seeing what settings you used.
Thanks.
Hi Ciaran! Cool name btw! I want to remake my street photography at night video! The GoPro could not handle the low light well :)
Bro you’re amazing!! I’m a Sony shooter just starting out. Currently I have a Sony a6000 with the sigma 56mm 1.4. I’m into sports, action and a little street photography. I like the X-T3 particularly for sports and action but I’m seeing now that it’s really an all around camera and that 56mm 1.2 is incredible. I’m honestly thinking about making the switch to Fuji. You’re killing it out there keep doing what you’re doing ✊🏽
i love your style! great video
Thanks a lot Neil! Appreciate it!
That taxi shot is cinematic!
Thanks dude!
such a great video dude!
Thanks Yoswer!
Awesome brudda.. i love your videos.. so much so that i bought the xf 56mm 1.2 today to go with my 27mm pancake. Thanks for the inspiration 🙌
A Freaking YES! A man after my own heart. Great video! Please let me know if you're going to be in Los Angeles anytime would love to shoot with you
Thanks dude! I’ll let you know once I visit LA again! :)
Great photos, Going to Mexico DF in January to do street photography for a couple weeks! cheers
Cool! Enjoy it!
Fantastic shots with awesome lens.
Sweet shots man, enjoyed the video.. wish I could take a trip over, miss Mexico
CJamesPhoto glad you liked it! Yeah I feel you. It’s a fun city!
You got some pretty good shots dude. I enjoyed this.
Stunning!
Thanks Rich! I post a video like this every week :)
Good job, j adore cette vidéo et les photos beaucoup de naturel , encouragements. Je pense acheter cet appareil xt3 vous me donnez envie.
Thanks a lot :) glad you like my approach! Tomorrow I’ll publish I new video! Stay tuned :)
Super fun... and tacos. Nice.
At 1:28 ... I was there. Taking photos. The niño feo graffiti kid. I wish I knew you a few months ago it would of been nice to have you take me around doing street photography

never thought 56 mm f1.2 would be this damn good. Did you have difficulty in focusing while using it?
Its such a fun lens I think! Sometimes the fast aperture makes it a big slower than a faster lens. But it’s my favorite lens at the moment.
¡Que valor!
You got some really interesting shots! Nice challenge, like to see more of these. I know it's easier to take low light photos with the XT3, but I was wondering if its too distracting to turn the AF illuminator "on" to help nail focus?
Kepano 808 Thanks a lot. Haha what is the AF illuminator?
@@FTrovatten You know, the little light just to the upper left of the lens. It flashes for a split second b/c mirrorless cameras need light the acquire focus.
@@stkuj Arh!! I havn't used that at all! I'll test it out! Thanks!
@@FTrovatten It can be distracting (esp at night) , but might help it acquire focus quicker (I use it on the X-Pro2, but I turn it off & on depending on situation).
Tacos is always a good idea. 😁 56 f1.2 is on my wishlist preowned ones is still expensive for me. Anyway hope you make another episode xt3 with the f2 lenses in lowlight. Curious to see how the photos will turn out 🇵🇭😊
Hey bro, next time you go out at night, you’ll get much better low-light video performance if you shoot at 24fps or at least 30fps. Shooting at 60fps means your shutter speed has to be much faster. Know what I mean?
Awesome shots! 🙌
2:00 - Love it.
It was my favorite one of that night as well! :)
Really enjoyed! Thanks
Que valiente de noche en la cedemequis! Si de día le pienso! jaja
haha gracias amigo!
I'd love for you to get some shots in CHAPULTEPEC!!! (The forest)
I will note that down! Could be fun!
Great work man!
Thanks!
Frederik, when you say "ISO at a decent level" you mean do you go below 6400? (i have a x-t1 and pictures sucks at 6400)
I think my limit is somewhere around 6400 on the X-T3 and it's looks alright I think.
nice shots, but why not using the xf35 f1.4 for the street? is the 56 better becaust the famouse bokeh?
Money. Because of money haha. But the 35 is on my radar for next buy! I'd also like to play with a really wide one.
I just bought it :)
Great game u got there... Mexico City looks real nice I have to say... and also one of the biggest cities in the world I think... ? //freddie
Yep, it is! It's a fun place. I've lived here for two years and for street photography it's a perfect!
at 1:28 ,...a romance, like shoot film fuji superia 200 and push it to 1600,..lovely
Thanks mate!
I wish X-T3 had IBIS. For night photography it would be helpful.
It would be nice a video of "how to make street photography" because sometimes, it's creep or strange to take pictures of random people and they notice it, specially to children or women. Great shots!
cacaloca234 I’m brewing on a video like that. It will come I promise :)
He Frederik are the shots you show out of cam or developed/filtered? Great work man, really inspriring!
...I have to get a better camera...
They are all shot raw and edited :)
@@FTrovatten Ok thanks :)
Could you share your Night settings? please! looks great
Thank! Most of them are shot with 125/s, 1.2 F and ISO 2000-3200.
awesome (I got the XT3 for just 4 days and love it. Only JPG shooter?@@FTrovatten
@@richonguzman Dope Congrats. It's a cool camera! I shoot only RAW and edit all in Capture One. I have a lot of more videos on my channel with X-T3 if you are interested :) And another one coming soon!
Does the Fuji TX3/4 need a specialised lens for taking night photography like this or is the default lens also sufficient?
Great video. What settings did you use? I love nightstreet photography with my xt3. I have it paired up with 35mmf2, but was looking at 50mm f2 or 56mm f1. Was leaning towards f2 because of speed of focus, but how do you find the 56mm compares for night street?
Most photos in this vide is 2000-3200 ISO. f1.2, 125/s. But you can see individual settings on my Flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/trovatten/ - I only own the 56mm 1.2 lens. Before that I used my x100f. For low-light situations, I would go with the as fast aperture as possible - so the 56mm. And it's also awesome for portraits. But I haven't used the 50mm f2. So can't really say.
My last 3-4 videos are shot using the 56mm. So it's easier for you to watch them and make your own opinion I think. But I think it's fun. It's like a sniper with bokeh :D
@@FTrovatten Thanks that's really helpful. I Will check out your other vids and flickr! These shots are pushing me towards the 56mm now 😂😂 check out my Instagram if you like- my shots at night are posted there :) instagram.com/jonbarbour22/
Hehe I have a thing for high contrast black and white, like you I see. Cool! :)
you should have set the shutterspeed higher. photos are too blurry
You should go to Cineteca Nacional!!
lets visit in my country Indonesia, there is much more a good shot for street photography :)
Would love to go one day!
Nice Video. What was the average photo ISO, shutter speed and f stop combination that you used?
Thanks! All of them are 125/s, ISO around 2000-3200 and 1.2F on all of them.
Interesting, thank you. One more question, if you don't mind --did you use auto focus or manual?
@@HavanaNewYork Sure. I use Auto focus on all of them :) You can see my photos here as well and the settings on each one: www.flickr.com/photos/trovatten/
Cool. Thanks for the link, really wonderful work. . BTW, I sent you a friend request on Facebook. My name is Ed Castaneda.
@@HavanaNewYork Thanks a lot! Appreciate it :)!
What max ISO were you using? I noticed a lot of camera shake in many shots, reason I say this is because I also struggle with that lens in low light street, focus is pretty average and anything below 1/160 and camera shake becomes a problem. It's the one big reason I am considering switching (back) to a system with IBIS.
I use 125/s and yeah, it's difficult when it's completely dark. I wouldn't switch because of that though.
Great video.. would you recommend xt3 for photography..?
Yes! Love it! You can see my gear here if you want: trovatten.com/gear/
Nice as always. Why don't you go to teotihuacan?
Richard Millan Thanks Richard! It’s not a bad idea. I haven’t been there with my camera yet. I’ll do that! Thanks for the input!
@@FTrovatten awesome I'm sure you will get some good ones. Keep rockin' bro
@@richardmillan8859 Thanks dude!
Cool videos.
So why are you living in Mexico City if you don't mind me asking?
Mexico City is amazing!
Thanks a lot Alex! I've lived here for 2 years and I'm working for a company called Storytel.mx :)
@@cacaloca234 Yes it is :)

What a great life experience. I love Mexico City . My father is from there so I have been there many times to visit family I'm planning a trip in the near future and looking forward to shooting some Street photography when I visit.
When you get a chance shoot some street photography in Chapultepec I love that area.
Keep up the great work.
Alex Casares arh that’s so cool! It’s a beautiful city! I’ll go to Chapultepec soon :)
Great video. It's the first I see of you and there are already so many things that I found relevant or challenging. Challenging to me is to ask people if I can take their picture, and even someday to take picture of them in the street. In bars I may ask the bartenders for permission. But usually my rx-100 is so small that I can go stealth. Once again, great picture, great video and you give Mexico a nice PR job. What about security at night compare to other city ?
I get that. It is a bit intimidating sometimes, but you get used to it I guess. Glad you liked the video. I upload videos like this once a week :). I'm aware that Mexico City can be dangerous, but I think it's like any other large city. You just have to be a bit smart about it.
@@FTrovatten Thanks for your answer. Great pics, great videos and really you make asking permission so natural and the result still candid that It makes me wanna try.
@@AxelCalvet Thanks a lot dude! Appreciate it :)
what is your iso at night? thanks :D
Dejlige billeder:) folk virker åbne og accepterende for at få deres billeder taget.
How do you take photos of stars?
you go to hollywood and do street photography.
@@andres-gu8yu lol stars in the sky not over paid twats
Didn’t you fear getting mugged?
I was advised not to “wear” a camera in Mexico City…
well i was not so happy shooting the XT3 at night, and it was a lit city, with 50mm wr f2. I need to say this.. it was/is my first Fuji camera. I come from a Canon background. I used a EOS M5 w f1.8, its fast and must say a bit faster then the XT3.. specs can say what it wants but real world is real world. I would say M5 is more pin point sharp. I do understand that I may not be using the camera at 100%, it was my first week shooting. Now in day light!!! WOW great camera.. but so is the M5. So I could use some feedback.. I post on Instagram instagram.com/aps_c_user/?hl=en what ever help would be great. So when Shooting at night the photos look hazy.. I was shooting AP and f2. I am sure I must be doing something wrong.
Is it not dangerous to walk around at night in Mexico as a white man?
Not really. I mean a bit. But like a lot other big cities
Be careful bro, it could be dangerous
Yea, I'm trying to be careful :)
