Jack Buck was indeed an American hero not just because he wrote a poem named “For America”, he served in the Army from 1943 to 1946. This 9/11 poem will remain as America’s famous poems in sports history. God Bless Jack Buck and America. (1924-2002)
I blame our country because this is a country known for its fads and its tendency to overreact to issues and then forget them as everyday life pushes them into the background.
Amazing speech by the absolutely great Jack Buck. He was heavily affected by Parkinson’s at this time, yet delivered this incredibly moving speech perfectly.
We as a city are so lucky we lived in the presence of greatness with Jack Buck on our radios and in our stadium each summer. No one will ever replace him, not ever could there be another Jack Buck!
As a long-time Tigers' fan, I couldn't agree more. How Jack impacted the Cardinal Fans in the St. Louis area was the same Erie Harwell did for us Tiger Fans % most of SE. Michigan for the matter!!!!
Was blessed enough to attend this game, somebody in left field started the USA chant and the whole stadium joined... not a dry eye in there. Powerful stuff
I was 4 years old when I first heard a Jack Buck call and it was perhaps the best baseball game I have ever seen with the most iconic calls we will see you tomorrow night.
"The one constant through all the years Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It’s been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again." Terence Mann
I know that this poem is about 9/11 but notice how we had more respect for men and women in uniform to protect and serve us. Now there is nothing but hate and disrespect. What happened? God bless the men and women who serve and protect.
How in God’s name did we go from cheering on our police and fire fighters to spitting in their faces in just 20 years time?! Those brave men and women run towards the chaos while we run the other way! We should praise them and thank them every day that we are alive!
My wife and I had tickets for the game the Friday before this game and were halfway to St Louis before hearing the game was postponed. We decided to continue on, and Saturday we went to JBuck’s restaurant. We saw Jack there having dinner with a group of friends. We finished around the same time and we were fortunate to meet him and get his autograph.
@@sdsmt99 the commissioner initially postponed the first three games through Thursday. It wasn’t until the NFL decided to postpone the weekend games (decision announced on September 13) that Selig announced the games Friday thru Sunday would also be postponed. We were halfway to St Louis when we heard that.
Listening to Jack growing up...being a Cards fan...we can only tell others how cool it is. Unfortunately, before the age of UA-cam we were sheeple, who thought terrorists actually attacked our way of life. 1000 foot buildings built to take multiple hits by airplanes fall at the same speed as a bowling ball dropped off their roofs. Another building falling at free fall speed and was never touched by outside forces. Jack did what he was always did this night and we loved him for it. Hard to see him struggle talking, when it was effortless for him for so many years. The patriotic responses to this event are America at it's best. The criminal acts that led us to do them is America at its worst.
4:02 I love Jack Buck, but the ironies of "War is just not our nature. We won't start, but we will end the fight". The first irony is that America is almost 244 years old and already we've had 12 major wars: America Revolution, War of 1812, Mexican-American, Civil, Spanish-American, WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq. The second irony is that, as of February 2020, more than 18 years after we first invaded them, we are still in Afghanistan and we'll still be there as long as there is Terrorism.
@@davidparnell5704there is no oil in Afghanistan. There was also no controversy over going to war there after 9/11 and all NATO countries participated. The second Iraq war was a war of choice, but Afghanistan was absolutely not.
War was unecessary when the guys who attacked were already dead. All that was necessary was to dismantle bases of operation at that time in existence, and to work with weak governments from which terror might stem, so to prevent more attacks in a life and cost efficient way, doing justice in a smart way. And so retaining our respect, honor, and freedom, things which ironically we have lost.
The government from which terror stemmed from was in Afghanistan, so we went there and successfully dismantled the Taliban regime, which America was universally in support of. Whatever came after that is a different issue, but for the couple years following the attack, with war brought to our doorstep, America was united in its resolve.
Brutal poetry and my estimation of JB has decreased. The blatant FOX adverts did not help. The "moving" speech did not move me at all. I found it boring and trite.
@@roderickcampbell2105 you deserve credit for changing your mind and admitting, you missed the POINT of the event---NOT award-winning poetry, but the HUMANITY of a frail old man, one lots of people loved, expressing himself...kudos .

Jack Buck's masterpiece.
Masterpiece? Rather...
This was his Magna Opus, his defining moment of his career.

pay attention to the 1st minute. every time Mr. Buck spoke, the _entire_ stadium hushed. such respect.
