- David Moen, M.D., is starting a healthcare strategy and physician leadership consulting company based in Stillwater, MN. At the time of this talk, he was President of Fairview Physician Associates (FPA) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. FPA is a provider network of more than 1,300 members that is affiliated with Fairview Health Services, an integrated health system of more than 20,000 employees and 3,000 aligned physicians. As President of FPA, Dave led the development of Fairview Health Network-an integrated, multi-specialty provider network built on the belief that providers are in the best position to transform care. Dr. Moen has held various leadership roles including medical lead for Fairview in partnership with Target Corporation, medical director of emergency and urgent care at Fairview Lakes Medical Center, member of the Executive Committee of the Fairview Lakes Health Services Board of Directors, member of the Board of Directors for Lakes Region Emergency Medical Services and board member for the Minnesota Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

This was a very thought provoking speech, Dr. Moen. I feel like this topic is discussed enough in our communities, let alone in healthcare settings. From the few conversations that my family members have had with doctors, they mostly pertained to medications, and whether they have made any improvements mobility wise. When I asked my grandfather, who has had some problems with his hips, about if he has gone to the doctor recently, he said no. I followed up by asking why not, and he replied that the visits he's had just involved giving him a prescription. So based on that example, I agree with Dr. Moen on the notion that establishing trust and belief with a patient is very important. From my grandfather's example, I believe that if the doctors that he visited would have taken longer to view what was bothering him, there would have been better results. The beneficence that is contained in Dr. Moen's speech is found when viewing how simple conversation could even show improvement. A doctor that takes to time to examine what is truly bothering a patient, will benefit that patient the most effectively because they will view the doctor as someone who cares about them.

Nice talk. It's now been over 9 years and still nothing has changed. If anything, it's gotten worse. There is no patient-centered care no matter how much they may profess it to be so or want it to be so. Is it hopeless?

I went to the ER yesterday and gave the doctor a lecture on why the American people distrust the medical profession after the last three years. I knew everything he would say before he came into the room (all dismissive).
I am changing primary doctors because I was homeless for four years and I needed a letter of referral to a apartment building. I asked my doctor for a letter since I had been going to her for all that time. She was much more worried about Virtue Signalling than getting me off the streets. Also, she said that she was only concerned with "medical issues." Her patients are walking collections of "medical issues," I guess, and where is the care for the Whole Person?

Great. My problem is I almost never meet doctors like him. It is all too clear they have not been trained to communicate. How about even a weekend workshop in psychology?
