It's beautiful. I am dating myself here when I say that my mother made me a beautiful beautiful muu muu and I wore it to school and the school called my mom and said I was inappropriately dressed! Scandalous muu muus!
My mother got in trouble for wearing pants to her school. After she did, the school ended up changing the dress code to allow girls to wear pants, too, instead of just skirts. Something will always be too scandalous to wear!
SewRena you look 👀 like a $1,000,000 people probably think you have $1 million😁 but I will say this and people will disagree with me, but that’s what I like about school uniforms. Everyone is dressed alike no complaints hopefully no bullying but I still don’t see how a m could be inappropriate. I couldn’t wear pants in school either until the 12th grade, I lived in a cold climate, so we wore pants under our dress or skirts until we got to school or froze to death😂
Very cool. Reminds me of growing up on O'ahu in the 60s when many ladies, including my mother, wore mu'umu'u. There is a more formal style called a holoku, with a train, worn at very formal events. It was popularized by Princess Ka'iulani, the Hawaiian Kingdom's last Crown Princess.
I love how it’s so fitted and shape-flattering in the front, but so “flowy” and breezy in the back. That front shaping elevates it above Muu-Muu status.
Yes, it is a muumuu. I'm old enough to remember the original dress from Hawaii or South Pacific islands before the fashion industry marketed it as everyday wear. Thank goodness they did. My maternal grandma lived in them, and now I wear them from May through September. This was a great video. I enjoy all your great sewing tips as well as your lovely voice. I'm just about to make one from a pattern I've had for over a year, from fabric left from a maternity dress I made for granddaughter. Yes, it's late in the year but I must do it. Thanks for the inspiration!!!
My Mom sewed for her sister who did a lot of traveling, and she made this very dress for Tessie’s trip to Hawaii. And she seed it on a Kenmore of similar vintage!
I love the idea of using elastic for the internal tie. I have a caftan pattern that calls for spaghetti straps to tie the waist, but elastic would eliminate the knot at my back.
I was born in the mid-1950’s. My sister and I wore mum muu dresses all summer, every summer, growing up. They were just wonderful, particularly cotton ones on hot days.😊
I live in muu-muus during the summer. It's the best house dress. The silhouette reminds me of Samantha on Bewitched. Her "witch's dress" has that same flowy back, but the sleeves were long. Hmmm...I bet with a different fabric this muu-muus could become a formal dress.
You are correct on the name. This IS a mu'u mu'u. The term gets thrown onto anything these days including shapeless jersey T-shirt gowns from Walmart. I find it frustrating, especially pertaining to patterns and clothing, when words no longer mean what they mean. If I search for culottes I get everything but. As always, everything you create is beautiful. Well done!
My parents had a chance to vacation in Hawaii, and Mom brought home a muu-muu. It was a little more substantial cotton, but she wore it for a couple of decades, and it thinned with time. It truly was a great garment for living in the Southwest.
🙋♀️Call it whatever you wish, it's beautiful! I haven't sewn in years. I know how to sew, ball gowns, coats cocktail dresses and draperies/curtains and dust ruffles, pillow shams, and even a wedding dress for a friend. You have inspired me to pull out the machine and get busy. Thank you, I love your videos! 😊
You wear bright colors so well! Lovely! I have almost that identical Kenmore sewing machine - have had it since 1972! My husband got it for me for Christmas our first year married. I've made many, many garments, including clothes for my 2 children, bathrobes for the family, and my own wardrobe for many years. I love seeing your make these vintage outfits!
Elizabeth Taylor and other actresses of that era wore that style in many movies. Depending on the fabric, it was styled as an evening dress for a home party or casual at home attire. Loved your video; it is the first I have seen of yours. ❤
You have put together such an excellent video! Your instructions and tips, your pleasant and lively voice and how well the auditory and visual parts combine are outstanding. Of course, the dress is unusual for a muu muu, beautiful, and you model it very well.
You are Fabulous! I'm a child of the 60's and the women wore these Muu-Muu's. Actually D.V.Furstenberg had a gown version more recently which you could undoubtedly recreate.
My granny wore what was called Muu muu in the 70s . I think for her it was a carryover of the 50s sack dress , bright and colorful. She’s kinda joke about taking her bath and putting her muu muu on . I had the feeling it was from maybe her younger days. She was in her 60s in the 70s. And she wore them all the way through the 90s . Thst turned out so pretty!
Wow, what a beautiful garment. Totally not what I was expecting when you said moo-moo. I do not sew vintage clothing but watching your videos sure makes me want to sew a vintage outfit.
I would definitely call your dress a Muumuu, but you wear it so gracefully that it could be considered a semi formal, especially because of the back. If you made it in a black or bright satin it would be amazing for a holiday party dress.
I think I work on summer time projects even in the winter!!!! Because by the time I get a summer time project done in the winter it is summer ⛱️🌞⛱️!!!!!!!! It takes me a while to get things done. I have sewed the most projects ever this summer though. I was so excited and happy. Love the muu muumuu.❤
Good morning/afternoon! Beautiful muu-muu. Brings back memories of the 1960s and a house with no air conditioning. 😂 My mom had a blue muu-mu. She only wore it around the house.
This would have certainly been my mother's mu'umu'u! I'm sure she had one in this cut in red. And here in Hawai'i she would have worn them for special occasions.
In my opinion, a Muumuu is something that is usually worn around the house, however, that dress that you have made is elegant and beautiful. I would encourage you to wear it out with your sweetheart on date night. 😀
Muumuu's have a really interesting history that unfortunately involves colonization. Folklore Patterns has a good pattern for it that includes some of the history. I will certainly be looking up more information for my own curiosity (and education).
You always see the vintage wardrobe of my dreams. I really really. Ees to get it together and focus on sewing the vintage patterns in have and finding the vintage patterns I wish for to fill out my closet
Lots of french in this lovely garment make me smile!French closure, french seams ( we call them english seams in France 😉) but I 've never heard of Muu muu, I understand with the comments that it is a loose dress for staying at home but that your dress is too cute for that...Can you explain the origin of this word? The silhouette reminds me the Watteau pleats : this is the most practical robe à la française !
I don't know what the correct definition is of a moo moo, we always called everything that was shapeless and flowing a moo moo. This isn't your average moo moo though. This reminds me of a hawaiian- esque garment and it is gorgeous!! U look stunning in everything, but this is so pretty on u! I love sewing summer garments, but I'm about to switch to fall/winter myself. I'm on a mission to make a complete vintage wardrobe and I've only scratched the surface. Looking forward to your next beautiful creation ❤❤
There are different types of muumuu dresses, with a variety of silhouettes and details. I think the ones with a higher neckline and long sleeves are suitable for formal luaus, but this doesn't seem to be a hard rule. Yours is really pretty and would be great for parties!
Thank you so much for going over the making of this. It wasn't quite what I thought it was either. I was imagining something that wasn't fitted at all, except for where there were the bra clasps were hidden in the back. It looks amazing on you.
I hate school dress codes. How is a muu muu inappropriate? By what standard?
SewRena you look 👀 like a $1,000,000 people probably think you have $1 million😁 but I will say this and people will disagree with me, but that’s what I like about school uniforms. Love your muumuu. Spent summer 1974 on Oahu and they would have called what you made a muumuu then. Fwiw very Hawaiian inspired
Thanks for the explanation and the cultural history. 🌻
I love how it’s so fitted and shape-flattering in the front, but so “flowy” and breezy in the back. That front shaping elevates it above Muu-Muu status.
…and, your intro dress is so colorful and cheery.
I was born in 1954. We called the shapeless ones mu muus.
I would call this gorgeous dress, that you have made, a fitted shift with a Wateau back.
Love that you mentioned you wore it to the grocery store AND felt fabulous❤It looks stunning and you made it look easy. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, it is a muumuu. I'm old enough to remember the original dress from Hawaii or South Pacific islands before the fashion industry marketed it as everyday wear. Thank goodness they did. Gorgeous! It’s a mullet muumuu! Business in the front, party in the back!🎉
My Mom sewed for her sister who did a lot of traveling, and she made this very dress for Tessie’s trip to Hawaii.
The most elegant Muu Muu I have ever seen and perfect fabric. Yellow really is your color.
I’m no longer sewing. Watching you and how you are creating things gives me so much joy. ❤❤❤
I live in muu-muus during the summer. It's the best house dress.
The silhouette reminds me of Samantha on Bewitched. Her "witch's dress" has that same flowy back, but the sleeves were long. Hmmm...I bet with a different fabric this muu-muus could become a formal dress.

So happy you did a muu muu!
My grandma and mom wore these all the time.
So pretty! Great fabric!

Beautiful summer dress on a beautiful woman!
My parents had a chance to vacation in Hawaii, and Mom brought home a muu-muu. It was a little more substantial cotton, but she wore it for a couple of decades, and it thinned with time. It truly was a great garment for living in the Southwest.

It's gorgeous! And you look smashing in it!

Don't laugh, but as soon as you revealed the gown I thought how spectacular it would look in gold lame. ❤
So beautiful and elegant!!! Definitely not an average moo moo!
Elizabeth Taylor and other actresses of that era wore that style in many movies. Depending on the fabric, it was styled as an evening dress for a home party or casual at home attire.
Loved your video; it is the first I have seen of yours. ❤
I collect the brand "polynesian patterns" because they are gorgeous like this dress.
Its a Nuu Muu! Beautiful🎉
How beautiful! This is my dream muu muu ❤ It looks comfortable & stylish
It’s beautiful and needs to be worn outside ❤
Who cares what it's called? It's lovely, and looks so cool and comfortable
That's a muumuu! And a very pretty one!
In Hawaii, it’s a traditonal dress and used to be worn daily, but now it’s only worn for special events.
Very lovely.thankyou for sharing❤
I wear mumus out. Mine are fabulous and this one is, too.
A very elegant muu muu
IT'S BEAUTIFUL, UPDATED A LINE DRESS 👗
I looooove muu muu dresses, they are comfy and cute, you’ve inspired me to make one. As expected, yours turned out wonderfully! ❤
It’s a caftan. Beautiful!
You look gorgeous! Great job.
Wow, what a beautiful garment. Totally not what I was expecting when you said moo-moo. I do not sew vintage clothing but watching your videos sure makes me want to sew a vintage outfit.

You look so beautiful and classic in that gorgeous muu muu!!
Love the print on the material.
Gertie has a modern pattern very similar that I've been lusting after! This is absolutely gorgeous, your seamstressing is top notch!!
I have her pattern I just don’t feel like printing so I used the original instead
You are so much fun to watch, your positive high energy is amazing. Thank you for upgrading my mood.
Thanks so much for watching
I'd call it a muu muu...a lovely one, but a muu muu just the same. And I'm inspired!
Love this pattern, I hope they bring it back. You did a great job with it.
Gertie has a version hers seems to have a lower back I love it
It’s so beautiful! I love it.
Good morning/afternoon! Beautiful muu-muu. Brings back memories of the 1960s and a house with no air conditioning. 😂 My mom had a blue muu-mu. She only wore it around the house.
What a cute dress!
I love this! So beautiful on you
Came out sew perfect! I can definitely see how relaxing it would be to wear. Love a zip and go outfit 🤩✨✨
Beautiful! Initially, Hawaiian mu’umu’u were a type of undergarment (similar to a chemise).
That is so gorgeous!
My grandmother used to wear mumus when i was a little girl in the 60s. 😊
It's beautiful. I like that neckline, too. I used to put french felled seams on my kids' pajamas and robes. They always lasted a long time with them.
I love that dress!
You look fabulous! ❤
My mom has this same machine! It was the first machine that I used and can still hear the sound of it in my mind. 😄
Beautiful! 🌹🌹🌹
Most flattering moomoo!😊
This would have certainly been my mother's mu'umu'u! I'm sure she had one in this cut in red. And here in Hawai'i she would have worn them for special occasions.
Beautiful muu muu thanks for sharing back in my days 60& 70 mu mu always heard is for large Hawaiian women 😢
I prefer the "shapeless granny" outfits. Its all i feel like wearing in summer.
In my opinion, a Muumuu is something that is usually worn around the house, however, that dress that you have made is elegant and beautiful. I would encourage you to wear it out with your sweetheart on date night. 😀
I didn't finish all of the summer projects I had in mind but I'm happy I at least started a knitting project and finished a pair of shorts.😅
This was a really nice video to watch. A very uplifting and heartwarming way to start my Sunday!
Wowie! That’s the prettiest muu-muu I have ever seen! Great pattern and gorgeous fabric!
I love the idea of the muu-muu. In the summer I live in sarongs around the house.
I love your muu-muu, Serena, and it looks beautiful on you.
Muumuu's have a really interesting history that unfortunately involves colonization. Folklore Patterns has a good pattern for it that includes some of the history. I will certainly be looking up more information for my own curiosity (and education).
The only thing it needs is deep pockets. Gorgeous
This dress is absolutely fabulous
You always see the vintage wardrobe of my dreams. I really really. Ees to get it together and focus on sewing the vintage patterns in have and finding the vintage patterns I wish for to fill out my closet
Beautiful 😍❤️❤️
I wouldn’t call this a muumuu. This seems like a lounge dress. It’s beautiful!
Your dress is beautiful!
Once I learn to sew a muu muu, I will fill my closet of muu muu 😂. Best lounge wear when working from home.
That is the prettiest 🐮 🐮 Ive ever seen! ❤
So cute and looks comfortable too.
I was born in 1967. Good times
I luv your choices of materials! So beautiful!!
You are my comfort channel
Such an honor❤️ thanks for being here
It’s stunning❤. Great video, thank you for sharing 😊

I love the top especially... awesome job!
Beautiful and love the fabric.
You are so great!

Breezy and beautiful
BEAUTIFUL🎉

What ever it’s called, it’s fabulous!
Thanks! And yes it is
PERFECT!!!!!!👍🏽 Love it!!♥♥
So pretty! Putting this straight onto my sewing project list
