Tarping 2:31 This is something I'm always wondering about. Why is the flatbed so popular in America? Similar loads in Europe would normally transported with a curtain trailer. From the looks of this video it's not only safer (as you don't have to clim on the load), but also must faster than manually tarping a (partial) load. Plus you get the additional benefit that you are able to trasport loads normally reserved for boxed trailers. It's not that curtain trailers don't exist in Amercia, it seems they are just no so common as in Europe...
It's mainly due to load width and height that open deck trailers are used. It ultimately gives the driver the option for more types of freight loads. Curtainside trailers are great and convenient but often hinder load size but weight capacity as well. Personally i would much rather try finding loaded specifically suited to curtainside work cause i have a bad back and knees but all the power to those willing to tarp loads as they are just far more flexible on loads then the others are.
@@peterbilttrucker83 Thanks for the explanation. I'm far more familiar with how trucking is done in Europe compare to America. That's one of the reasons I watch these types of videos. It's interesting to see how trucking is done elsewhere. If you don't mind do I have a follow-up question: The dimensions (length, width and height) of curtain trailers are fixed, so you are indeed limited what you can transport in them vs a open deck trailer. However in Europe these dimensions are based on the legal maximum length, width and height a load can have. Anything over and you need another type or trailer (for example a stepdeck trailer) or a special permit to transport the goods. This is one of the reasons why curtain trailers in Europe are so popular vs a open deck trailer. If its fits on a open deck trailer it's also fits in a curtain trailer. Which brings me to the question: How are the maximum dimensions handeld for open deck trailers vs other trailers (for example boxed trailers)? Are you allowed to transport goods that are wider or heigher on a open deck trailer which you aren't allowed to transport with a curtain trailer?
That works great for side loaded, unloaded stuff. There are many places that load from above. From cranes on moving ceiling rails, to portable Crane, track hoe... hard to get enough clearance. It would be great often. But also you have full wind fighting size empty, loaded with 4’ tall items. You still are bucking wind +8 ft tall
why did you go for that big of a wheelbase on your trailer? i'v tried them before and you can't turn them without squeaking the tires cuz the wheel are so far apart.
I thought you said it was a solo trip? But you have your BIL? I am too lazy to check sizes. Was each bundle 16’? They made 2 piles? You have a 48’ trailer? So you could have had a lower profile load... I realize your truck punches a huge hole. But wouldn’t having load @2’ shorter have been worth the extra straps? You wouldn’t let them go higher then necessary on a gooseneck/pickup load. I am wondering at your hill speeds. It was extremely rare I was under 40 mph on hills unless poor road conditions. (Where you had running start, not forced to slow down for traffic,..)
You asked a question. I answered it. If brake lights on coming on when your Jake’s are on, you have an electrical issue. Or someone is riding the brakes along with the jake. I’ve been in this game for 7 years and an owner/op for 2. I think I know what I’m talking about 😂

Pretty sure if he fell it would slowly take him to the ground. When he walks, the slack keeps getting taken back up so I’m assuming its a controlled fall to the ground.
