The characteristic and mantissa are the two parts of a logarithm:
Characteristic
The integer part of a logarithm, or the number to the left of the decimal point
Mantissa
The non-integer part of a logarithm, or the number to the right of the decimal point
Here are some things to know about characteristics and mantissas:
The mantissa is always positive and less than 1.
The characteristic can be positive or negative. If the characteristic is negative, it is represented with a bar over the number. For example, −4 can be written as ¯4.
If the logarithm of a number is negative, the mantissa can be made positive by subtracting 1 from the integral part and adding 1 to the decimal part.
For example, in the logarithm log10 200 = 2.3010, the characteristic is 2 and the mantissa is 0.3010.
