My very young self disassembled a Penn Longbeach bridge screws first. Removing the frame screws led to an overwhelming collection of parts spilling out. I was given five days to restore it to working condition with a dire penalty if it didn't work. A kind gentleman heard about my situation and invited me into his wondrous basement for lessons on reel repair. I reassembled the reel with guidance. It was a miracle that I paid attention in a basement full of tools, fishing gear and hunting paraphernalia. Everything a boy dreamt about was there. Presenting a perfectly functioning reel to the family authorities averted a serious meeting with a paddle.
Thanks for sharing your story, it is the kind of tale that makes me glad I'm doing these videos Ward. There is a great fishing community here and what you experienced is hopefully continuing through these videos - Best wishes - Dennis
Without 2nd Chance Tackle and a few other UA-cam fishing channels I never would have collected a single vintage spinning reel. Now I have almost 420 vintage spinning reels from 17 different countries. It’s a great hobby but don’t get addicted like me! - Chris
@@2ndChanceTackleoh it wasn’t a small way! In a very sure sense you are the father of my spinning reels collection. Back then I would watch your UA-cam channel every night and if you were doing a vintage spinning reel that I liked, I would immediately start looking for that reel knowing that you would teach me how to service it. I did that quite a few times. This is how I started collecting. - Chris
A friend is another way to learn. This was when I was about 12 .In my friends kitchen while we were getting ready to go fishing. He noticed my reel ( a Zebco Pro Staff 20 or 30) was not running as well as it should and told me I should oil it. While he was in another room I helped myself to a scewdriver and some canola oil from his pantry. He walked in just as I started dumping oil under the cover plate. I figured it was kind of like filling an auto engine block. He was mortified. I still remember the look on his face and the " NOooo" like he was yelling at the neighborhood dog.
That is an interesting story - and a great way to learn a valuable lesson - Maybe that's why I always recommend using only fishing reel greases and oils! thanks for sharing -
I really like the Shakespeare Service Reel they are perfect for big Catfish , I use one just for that . Hey ! I could watch these kinda videos all day . Thanks Dennis we enjoyed it .
Before UA-cam, I'd use a reel that needed service as long as I could stand it. Lube it over and over in the hope that a miracle would occur. Then finally take it apart to repair it. Then throw it away and buy a new one.
Thanks for sharing. One of my objectives in creating these videos is to keep the broken and poorly performing reels out of landfills - Best wishes - Dennis
Dennis thank you so much for your videos on learning how to fix reals and all of your fishing tips
I'm glad my videos are helpful. Thanks for the note and for watching - Dennis

Beautiful vintage reel Dennis. Gotta love the simplicity of the reels back then. You and your family have a wonderful evening my friend.
Thank you! It was a different world back then! Simplicity will always beat complexity when trying to accomplish the same task
@2ndChanceTackle you're welcome. Yes it was. Yeah it will.
