It’s simultaneously hopeful, and hopeless but still with a faint light at the end of the tunnel that represents almost any current situation! It’s genuinely haunting and thought provoking and like a lot of great songs, incredibly relevant no matter what time/era/decade/ whatever it is! In this case, with all the stuff going on in both entertainment and tech, it really feels like this song resonates with the atmosphere of all that stuff! (And not just because of the name “California”)

This song brings such a mix of emotions. I'm a Californian and I can honestly say that I have never seen so much trash and homeless on our streets. The number of wildfires that are happening annually, or the looting of stores and the same ones getting away with it because they know the system will allow them to. People can say whatever they want about California, but if your home, where all of your memories of family and friends are, was treated like it's a lost cause, I can almost promise that you would want to do anything you can to preserve it. We cannot expect other people to care about us, if we don't even care enough to help ourselves. And I do say "us" as a whole. California itself is not what sucks or is the problem, it's the people who have been here for years and have chosen not to care anymore, or the people who keep coming in and don't care about what it's doing. I'm only one person, but the anger and disappointment I'm sure is shared among many of us, as well as our love for this place. I mean no disrespect by this, but shame on the ones in leadership who prioritize everything else but their own people and refuse to acknowledge the truth of our situation. We are not doomed, but enough of us have to care and not just talk about it. If we keep doing what we're doing and allowing what we're allowing, we will be doomed, and it'll be too late to do anything about it.
