    Impressive! I grew sweet potatoes this year, just 3 plants because I was a newbee to them. I also got a HUGE harvest. I planted them near the fence and just let them climb all over. I did find some "surprise" bonus potatoes in other places, as the plant did send out runners. I felt like a kid at Christmas when I dug them. Such a rewarding and nutritious crop. Agree that consistent watering did help.

    Great harvest. I'm going to place very well composted wood chips in the bottom half of my raised beds for sweet potatoes. Conventional gardening/ potting soil the rest of the way and the added fertilizer and I believe you said bone meal. And I'm thinking cattle panels for the vines. Nice harvest! I put out about 40 plants. I had similar results. Total harvest was 132# several tubers over 3# most plants produced 10 to 12 tubers grown in a new no-till garden with leaf compost and wood mulch paths 8 inches deep. Last year we grew twice as many plants and harvested about 180# The key is the high phosphorus fertilizer. Our Red Norlands and Kenibec potatoes were exceptional this year also. The Red Norlands grew to an unbelievable height of 42" and the tubers largest I've ever grown. 120 ft row produced 320# of potatoes. We canned over 120 quarts and still have 100# in storage. My wife started canning sweet potatoes this week and so far added 48 quarts to our pantry. Only half way done. It was a great year for potatoes and the garden. Loving the no-till and raised beds. Our pantry is overflowing. We are truly blessed 🥰
    We still have half of the sweet potatoes we harvested last year.
    Fresh and canned! It's very exciting when you start digging up 3 and 4 pound sweet potatoes!
    Thanks Gary nice video great harvest.

    An informative and FUN video! We had our first successful, Big harvest of some huge sweet potatoes, this year!! Lots of "Wow!!" was going on. Haha! I'm a bit confused, though. The organic farm I bought the slips from, as well as other places, said to water them well for the first few weeks, then leave them be, afterward. They "don't like too much water". But, yours look beautiful! Gardening can be so confusing sometimes! 😋

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 роки тому +1

      Nice harvest! So watering is always confusing. All I can say is this year I spent more time ensuring the soil stayed moist, not soaked and puddling, and so many more crops did better. The issue becomes places that dont get a lot of rain, weeks of hot sun, etc. If you let container SP dry out, they will suffer. If you let ground planted crops dry for prolonged periods, youll still get SP but not as many IMO.

    Nice harvest! I've been told that you actually want the medium size sweet potatoes since if they get too large they can become fiberous. Also, I've read that you might want to lay them on the soil for several hours immediately after harvesting so that the skin can dry out and toughen up otherwise it can bruise or tear easily.
    Did you notice anything like that?

    Do sweet potatoes/ yams need to be cured? I live in a suburb north of Los Angeles and planted a few eyes from market yams many months ago. Now the shallow raised bed is filled with with the pretty vines. I am wondering if the vines will die back since we only get frost a few times in winter.
