When I was young my Grandmother would take me to a local IHOP near her home every Saturday morning for about 5 years , between the ages 11 and about 16. I'd always get the largest stack of those delicious butter milk pancakes 🥞 and pour a ton of syrup on them. Such beautiful memories.

On my birthday, back in the 60s when I was little, my family and I would always go to the IHOP (my request) before buying our Christmas tree. My favorite was a stack of buttermilk pancakes with a ton of butter and Boysenberry syrup. Such wonderful memories, thanks.

I was in a rock and pop cover band in the SF Bay Area in the mid-'70's, and have many fond memories of us all converging on the International House of Pancakes (pre-IHOP) in Hayward, California, at 2 or 3 AM after our gigs. I'd load up on their delicious corn pancakes, or "Pigs in a Blanket," floated in 3 or 4 flavors of syrup, then go home to bed on a very full stomach! Sure couldn't carbo-load like that today!

I remember going to IHOP many times over the years with my family as a kid. what was nice was it was the only place where you could get boysenberry syrup. I remember my late Father having fun when we went there by ordering the rooty-tooty fresh and fruity meal. One of them recently opened a few years ago in the mall in my downtown area. Nice to see they're still going strong. Great memories of this place.

Another COVID casualty! 😞 I hope they'll bring em back. Those teeny tiny caps of microwaved "maple" are stingy and quickly get sopped up before you dig into the stack. The franchise owners must have got spoiled by all the money savings as a result of the "pandemic" restrictions.

I-Hop is my Favorite Place to eat breakfast, if there was one much closer to me, I would be there quite a bit, I could eat I-Hop 24/ 7. When, I was in Florida on a vacation quite some yrs ago, there was one across from the hotel we were staying at, for about a little over a week and, we ate breakfast there everyday, I thought, I’d died and gone to heaven. I have so many good memories of this place from so, many vacations.

i can appreciate international house of pancakes. i did not know understand how important it is to my friend chet lau.(chester) his dad a chinese owner of a restaurant in china town in new york city. it is not the american chinese food many of us so called american think of but true chinese delicacies like chicken feet chicken with the head still on duck with the head still on. i will i did not under it then. but it was a celebration banquet that chets parents had to rejoice that their son married a lady from china and invited good friends of chester from connecticut to they celebration in honor of the married couple.
back to the ihop story before it was ihop. chester went to ihop for breakfast on saturday mornings with his dad religiously. i am not certain if it was a bonding of two cultures the american born son and the chinese born father. a way to blend cultures so no one culture dominated. but i know that chet went with his mother to find a bride of chinese birth and/or friends of the family in the proverbial old country.
i am not sure chet might have been the youngest son. he has an older sister brenda who suggested that my eventual life partner and eventually my wife should get together similar to chet and his life partner ping. maybe a prearranged marriage. since i believe in god i will think of as divine intervention with humans guiding the way. chet settled down in west hartford. with his ping and thier three sons a couple blocks from an old ihops looking building
my dear wife's autistic but functional to normal standards whatever normal is. clayton loved celebrating his birthday at the newer ihops.
and i can be a glutton and eat for an hour on eating all you can eat pancakes and wash them down with a gallon of coffee. and the stand joke where did it go. i pointed to my legs saying that my stomach was full and i was filling my hollow legs. at least it was for a good laugh.
      until later my friend.

When I was a little kid, a new one opened in the neighborhood. I nagged my parents, who were kind of hard, until they grudgingly finally took me. I ordered a big waffle, and I was dazzled by all those colored syrups. My parents warned me to choose only one, but I wanted them all. I started pouring a different one into each of the quadrants against their warnings. Well, the syrups flowed into each other because it was a bad idea to begin with, and I'd put on too much as well. The dyes mixed, and it turned into a soggy, gray, inedible mass. My parents got angry and told me to eat it anyway. The trip to the pancake house had turned into a disaster. I sat there under their glare and quietly the tears flowed. The waitress came over and asked what was wrong and saw the mess. She offered to bring some pancakes. Dad angrily said he wasn't buying anyless else and to leave the waffle. The waitress gave me a pat and left. A little while later she came with a plate of pancakes, removed the dead, grey waffle, looked at my dad and said, "It's on the house," and mussed my hair. Yeah, I only used one syrup.🥺🤤😁

When I would stay in Rhode Island in my youth, during the late 60’s-early 70’s, IHOP was one of the few restaurants open after nightclub hours. For this reason it was a haunt for many a teen on date nights, (Wednesdays and Saturdays). Needless to say, many pots of coffee arrived at tables so as to “sober up” before returning home. (The purchase of alcohol was permitted for those 18 years and older at that time. For those too young, there were a myriad of invalid id’s exchanged...to pass getting “carded” by bouncers a club doors.)

IHOP and Sambo's were our go-to restaurants when we went on our summer trips to family in the south in the 70s. Tasty food, whole family, decent price. I loved the boysenberry syrup, this was before you could get absolutely anything at the grocery store so it was a summer vacation thing for me and I really soaked my pancakes with the stuff. I also remember their waffle irons being broken all the time.

LOL, the waffle irons weren't broken, they're The International House of PANCAKES..........not waffles.

I've always liked IHOP. There is one just a couple miles down the road but I haven't been there in a few years. I used to go to this mom and pop place instead because I like supporting small business but COVID shut them down (just one of a million heartbreaking stories there). Anyway, when I think of IHOP I always think of Father Edwards. He was a priest at the parish I was part of as a kid and I used to do Saturday morning Mass with him when I was an altar boy. He was always kind to us and would take the altar boys who worked Saturday's to IHOP after Mass. He was a good and decent man and I miss him and the wisdom he imparted on all us parishioners way back when. RIP Father. I trust God had a few cigars ready for you and a little something for that flask you kept near your vestments. God Bless and I'll be along directly.

Good to hear recollections about a Catholic priest who was kind to the kids he had contact with. There were many of them, but unfortunately we hear too much about the ones who weren't so kind, and that causes the good guys to be overlooked all too often. Thanks for your comment.

In 1973 I moved from small town to Kansas City. My parents came to visit and I took them and my little brother (12) there for their 1st time. This was the 1st time my little brother ever saw a round scoop of butter on top of his pancakes. He thought it was ice cream and popped it in his mouth. Not relevant here but a good laugh.

I live in Los Angeles and haven't eaten at IHOP for years. Last weekend we went to Dublin, GA for a wedding and at 2 am, the only place open was IHOP. The food was mediocre, but the service was amazing. Never had that attentive, smiling service in LA. Thank you Dublin IHOP.

The last time I went to IHOP was about 15 years ago. I got up to go to the restroom made a wrong turn and ended up almost in the kitchen. That kitchen was absolutely filthy. A kitchen that filthy meant filthy food. It turned my stomach. I left and have never been back since. Not saying they are all like that, but just that one was enough to turn me off....forever.

MANY good memories of IHOP from childhood to today and hope they NEVER go out of business!😁Memories as a child when me and my parents ate there after going to outdoor events (dirt track races, music festivals ,ect) and talk with the waitstaff about what we saw (loved the inviting diner feel). High school cruising out late with my friends and after midnight wanted something to eat (back then Taco Bell, ect all closed at 10), and all of us chipping in for the appetizers. When me and my friends Finally got our 21st birthdays and hit the clubs....and after that was starving, ate and people watch the 2am crowd. College...late night studying and me and my friends getting the pot of coffee at our table and snacking. To just a few years ago going to drum circles, made new friends there then afterwards went to IHOP talk about the night. 😁

It’s definitely gone way downhill since the 1960s. It used to be fun when my dad took me there, but now my experience has included so-so service, dirty bathrooms and almost no hint of the international pancake offerings like before. All they have now are different flavored syrups!

Have you heard of Alice's Wonderful Kitchen? It seems like it was trademarked by Restaurant Association and I've found advertisements for it with the same roof, but purple. I think they tried to convert or have double restaurants but failed. There's almost no info about this other than old advertisements in newspapers

Our two primary locations were East Brunswick and Menlo Park , NJ. The building was rustic and service always friendly. The modern IHOP, as another commenter said, is just another corporate kiosk. Food still good, but....a sign of the times.

Growing up I remember them having “all you can eat pancakes” right around my birthday. We would always go there for breakfast on my birthday. I loved how they had different flavored syrups on the table. I haven’t ate at IHOP in years tho. Last I remember it was overpriced and portions were not big. We like Black Bear Diner now for breakfast.

I worked at two different IHOPs in two different cities. The first one was in Wood River, Illinois when I was in high school. The second one was in Lakewood, Colorado - after
I was discharged from the Air Force. Both experiences had good and bad times. The first location, when I was a Sophomore in high school, started as a busboy and dishwasher
and eventually became a cook. The franchisee was kind of a mean man but I managed to survive due to an endless stream of cute waitresses that worked there. The second
stint was as a cook and overnight manager (open 24 hours). I was there for a couple of years but that ended when we were robbed at gunpoint - too scary after that ! About the
steeply pitched blue roof - it served a purpose ! It was the second story that housed all of the dry goods and employee break room. It was a pain when ever we would get a food
delivery because it was back breaking work to carry all that stuff up the stairs. Finally, the upstairs storage room served as the location of a s*xual encounter with the managers
daughter on New Years Eve when there were no customers. Those 50 pound bags of pancake mix served as just the right "platform" for our escapade. Nice memory indeed !!!

I used to work for a company that sold coffee, tea and was a distributor for the syrups, flours salsa and spaghetti sauces. I never went into a clean kitchen they were all filthy. The franchisees were most often pakistanis who were rude, mistreated their employees and these peiople did not like to pay their bills, we would constantly have to get oks the charge orders for them on a routine basis . I slipped once in a kitchen and pulled a groin muscle and another time in the same restaurant fell in the same place due to the floor constantly being wet which was common among all of them as was the practice of piling the trash generated at breakfast time and lunjch time into a huge pile against the back door. Beware of these places.

There was one of the classic A-frame stores just a few blocks from our home growing up.
Passed it all the time, but very rarely went there. Dad preferred Denny’s, just another block away, so that’s where we went. They could be the same business. Don’t think there’s enough to distinguish them from one another
