  • Tourists harassing wildlife in Yellowstone is unfortunately a common occurrence. Cases of tourist petting or posing for selfies with bison or getting gored have become hallmarks of seasonal national news coverage.
    But few people realize that petting, chasing, grabbing, and otherwise harming wild animals is not just a Yellowstone National Park problem. Harassing and harming wild animals is an everywhere problem.
    This video captures a unique and thrilling encounter with more than 40 Rocky Mountain goats in Utah's Uinta Mountains and the story of how some travelers attacked and harassed these iconic animals in one of Utah's most sublime wilderness areas.

    I love your channel, mostly due to the same love and respect of nature. 3 years ago, my husband, (who had never seen wild nature like what Wyoming offers,) visited at the height of the summer season. It just blew my mind at the blatant disregard for every precaution the Fish and Game did to keep human life safe from the wild, instinctual 'self preservation', and 'keep our young safe' animal life. Signs were EVERYWHERE...and I do mean everywhere..."Bear activity on road ways, stay in your car" 'Bears are dangerous, stay in your car" "Do not harass the wild life". We came around a bend, halfway between Jackson and Dubois and nearly rear-ended numerous driverless cars stopped in the road. People were out of their cars photographing a Grizzly sow and her quite young cub. The sow kept charging at the utterly brainless people who were ridiculously close, and closing in yet more. I get it, she was beautiful and how many times do you get to see bears in Nature?! Fine, offer yourself as a teaching tool on how the cub will need to protect itself later on in life ON YOUR OWN TIME. But you put others at risk that are around you, AND those who are driving on the road, and have no idea that you left your brain sitting in your vehicle blocking the roadway. It sickens me that the animals ALWAYS suffers for the stupid actions of man. You are in THEIR home, you are HARASSING them, you are attacked...and the animal, doing what it does by INSTINCT, pays the ultimate price for your entitled attitude. And why would any be surprised were the Parks to do tours only, or be closed to the public. Man is so utterly destructive...grrrr....can you tell this upsets me, lol??

      I've often wondered if physical signs are much help at all. Especially in the "smart" phone era. People are often so focused on their little screens, or their social media portfolio that they seem mostly disengaged or unconscious of physical warning signs.
      I just returned from Yellowstone, and had numerous incredible bear sightings including a mother grizzly with cubs only 20ish feet from my car. Unfortunately, there were a number of people also leaping from their cars, "smart" phones drawn.
      One lady came on foot right between my car and the mother grizzly (only 20 yards away at that point). It's the only time I've ever commanded someone "Get back in your car!"
      While there were about three people who behaved incredibly irresponsibly, most people were respectful and responsible. Makes me wonder what it will take to get the minority to shape up.

      I am with you this is a symptom of the selfie generation. I’ve spend a lifetime visiting the wilderness Wildlife harassment at current levels only in last 10’years.

    This stuff makes me so mad. There have been articles lately that a couple dogs have been killed by mountain goats. The owners should be ashamed of their negligence in putting their pets in danger.

      These are the very same goats involved in those incidents. I mention those incidents in my most recent video on the hazards of taking a dog into grizzly country.
      I hope you'll check it out. It goes into depth on this very issue.

    I've had these goats walk right up to me in the mountains of Colorado. One stood 3' from one. I assume it's because other hikers had fed them. They are incredibly muscular and the horns look very ominous. I've heard they've killed threatening dogs. Beautiful animals, and it's a thrill to see them. But I try to keep my distance and I would never feed one.

      Thanks for sharing your experience! I actually recently released a short discussing those recent incidents in Utah that have resulted in the death of at least three dogs in three weeks.
      The goats seen here are the very same goats involved in those incidents.

    I'm new to the channel and just recently subscribed. I love the cool views and great shots. You seem to have good information as well. Keep up the great work. I am local and recognize many of place that you are doing a great job of capturing.
    I've noticed some negativity and slightly pious views in the few videos that I have watched. It is enough to have me considering whether I will continue participating. Maybe presenting the same information slightly different might be received better?
    I figured I would give you some direct, honest feedback. Hopefully you can receive this in the spirit it is intended. I think there is some real potential here and wanted to express my views. Maybe I am the only one that feels this way and maybe everyone else is okay with your tone? Maybe others will respond here and validate or oppose my thoughts.
    Nothing worse than someone getting on the comments section and negatively complaining about you being negative, especially when you have put in so much work to create such a great (and free) channel......Hopefully that is not how thIs comes off. Thank you for your efforts!
    Good luck. I am still invested and will definitely give you more of a chance!

      I really do appreciate the feedback. Negativity and piousness are definitely not what I'm going for and they are also somewhat subjective. Regardless, I'm always looking for ways to improve.
      That said, I am troubled by how internet culture is harming our wild spaces and putting people and wildlife at risk.
      Let me know if there are specific criticisms that you think are too negative or pious and I'll gladly consider your feedback. I don't claim to be perfect, but I do desire to produce the best resources I possibly can, which often requires addressing problematic behaviors or the internet's bad advice.
      Welcome aboard! I hope you'll always feel comfortable providing feedback.

    Those things are scary. Saw one on Bald Mountain. Was real cute, but those horns are no joke. Especially up there, where they have the advantage on movement with all the boulders.

    You do this so well...do you do public speaking on this?? EVERYWHERE needs to do public announcements....LEAVE THEM ALONE! People are too stupid. I'm sending this to the local colleges! You just rock. Thank you!!

      Thanks! I have actually been a guest lecturer at a few colleges. I don't think most people think they're being irresponsible, self-regulation is just a largely undeveloped skill and it does lead people to make very stupid decisions.
      Thanks so much for your continued support! Sorry for the late response, I've been traveling and only recently have been able to respond to my viewers.

    dogs are a big culprit of messing with these goats

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  6 місяців тому

      Very true, but it’s hard to blame the dogs. They’ve been bred to pursue or attack animals for centuries. This is what they’ve been programmed to do.
      It’s people who need to take responsibility.

    • @dogculturereveiw
      @dogculturereveiw 6 місяців тому

      YOUR correct the people need to not bring dogs , but it is correct to blame the dogs , they influence their owners to do stupid things and they attack the goats , take away the dogs and you got less issues for the goats and for the owners. Owners think a leash will help , but a dog can pull people off the trail to their death , so they constantly let them off leash. Saying "that is just what dogs do" does not take away the blame . When a goat butts a dog off a cliff the dog people ALWAYS call it a goat ATTACK well Goats are trying to do what they do too!! And no no no dog dogs do not naturally harras goats anyway, so it is not a case of "that is just what they do" , because they are an invasive species to the goats and not supposed to be messing with them at all.
