- The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Ep. 156
How in the world did people become Nazis? How could it have happened? These are questions we grew up with and, maybe, always hoped against hope we wouldn't be able to answer. There's a comfort in them remaining mysterious, but in that comfort we're vulnerable. How can we possibly make good on "Never Again" if we do not know how it happened? Sadly, today we're threatened with the same menace. Sadly, today, we're learning not how it could have happened, but exactly how it happened because it's happening again around us. More and more of us know, with our stomachs sunken, that it is now time to speak up, but that raises another question: how? We don't even know how it happened, much less what could have stopped it. Enter Melita Maschmann, former Nazi, and her admirable book (at least so far as I've read!), Account Rendered: A Dossier on My Former Self (amzn.to/42rimB2) (1964). In this book, written in the form of a long letter to her teenage best friend, who was Jewish, she endeavors to explain how it could have happened to a good, respectable, well-off, conservative girl like her who went on to join the Hitler Youth and become a Nazi. She wrote it so we can know how it happened. She wrote it because "Never Again" means never. She wrote it in case "Never Again" ever again becomes now. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay introduces the book and reads a few poignant excerpts with ominous parallels to today. Join him, just in case "Never Again" really is now.

12:30 James, you’re reading into it. “Because she wasn’t a leftist…” No James, she was as leftist as it gets. I have known many leftists throughout my life who grew up in conservative families and towns. That’s why they became leftists - it’s part of teenage rebellion, and if the kid’s narcissistic enough the leftism will stick with them for life. Growing up in a conservative home doesn’t in any way make a teenager become a conservative. The fact that she rejected her parent’s conservative ideals shows my point plainly.
✔️
It was clearly teenage rebellion. Also. The notsee party was always at odds with German conservatism.
The example is how influence from outside the home led her down a bad path. Better parenting would have helped prevent that.
I was a bit of a lefty in hs until my dad and I started bonding more.
The mid century Germans were leftist fellow travellers until they had a fallout with their frenemies. See Molotov Ribbentrop pact.
Bit like the feminist TERF schism.
James subscribes to the iron law of leftist projection. Eg. Woke right. And claiming that the German socialist were conservative.
The problem with the entire approach is considering the Nazis to be abnormal or monstrous. They were quite predictable and “normal” both for their time and in the range of historical human political and psychological expression. To see them as un human is to misunderstand humanity itself and to understand ourselves. Much of the so called Liberal Politics we practice today is completely harmonious with the Nazi experience. To deny this is to fool ourselves and ultimately to make ourselves vulnerable to falling for the mass hysteria and dehumanization that accompanies all modern technologically enhanced politics.
So again, my issue with these narratives and Nazi self criticism stories is that they tend to separate us from the Nazi experience and obscure us from our own political selves.
This is a reasonable statement. Germany was FULL of antisemitism long before the Nazis took power. Since Martin Luther and maybe before. The Catholic Church has been an enemy to the Jews for 2000 years. Martin Luther was no friend to the Jews. Calvin was no friend to the Jews. Much of the late 19th and early 20th century resentment against Jews were against the assimilated Jews (Reform movement), as the author herself says she respected the poorer Orthodox Jews. It was people seeing that a particular sub group in a society were successful. And people resented that. Couple that with the existing theological anti-Jewish propaganda and you have a powder keg.
_"To see them as un human is to misunderstand humanity itself"_
The left collectively live in a fairyland which has historically always been completely wrong about human nature, in every situation.
Rousseau was the dumbest rock to ever be birthed on this great earth.
yep the only thing separating us from those nazis is time, the culture that made them still exists.
We only need to look to isreal for examples
The british Cecil Rhodes, a kind of viceroy of the British crown, was equally r#cist, and committed worse crimes. His fortune founded the Fabian Society, which is behind worldwide promotion of marxism, and w#k1sm.
The cognitive dissonance of not hating any individual in your personal life but that the politics that you support, for supposedly all the right reasons, could spew hate and danger if you are not thoroughly checking... is eye-opening! Thank you, James.
Being swept-up emotionally is something I try not to let happen to me anymore. Not by fear, not by any mass-movement, not by the media.
I'm a German born and raised, and an American citizen after 10 years of honorable military serve in the US Army.
What you're addressing so plainly and to me, very clearly, is EXACTLY what I spoke openly and clearly and with great horror, in 2020/2021. My own nat8ve country and Austria, used the harshest, unconstitutional, inhumane measures in the Covid Coup against their peoples. And the Penelope went so enthusiastically along with all of it, even fanatically denouncing their own families and friends. I said it then- NEVER AGAIN IS NOW AND NOW EVERYONE KNOWS HOW IT WAS POSSIBLE THEN.
But it was conveniently dismissed by, this is totally different". A but, but iys the language, the patterns, the methods, used that were very eerily similar. And to THIS DAY, the obvious is simply dismissed. Buy the indoct8nayed and cult-like Woke Left and Woke Right both. The danger is ever present and aided by unfathomable proliferation of technol9gy and AI.
I've been sharing yoir powerful videos and writings but mist simply can't be bothered to read or listen. Even the "awake" ones. THANK YOU for your work. May we all come to our senses and commin sense before it's too late forever.
MEP Christine Anderson made the same observation. She asserted after the Covid fiasco, no-one ever again need wonder how the German people fell under the influence of despotism back in the 30's - this has now happened round the whole western world. I had come to the same conclusion - something I wondered about for a long period of my life, I recognised it happening around me at the time and finally understood the common or garden mechanism happening at scale, comprehensible to any school child.
AI is based. ❤
@@petrawagner4946 I condemn the wars the USA has done in my life. They have mostly been evil.
I live in Austria, and I can confirm that there was a mass psychosis and mass formation happening, incited primarily by politicians but most notably and strongly by state media. The media eagerly provided a platform to individuals who labeled those criticizing or deviating from the mainstream narrative as dumb, esoteric, asocial, conspiracy theorists, tin-foil-hat wearers, right-wing extremists, antisemitic, and more.
This phenomenon also ties into the idea of being "clean" and "healthy" versus others who are perceived as "dirty" and "unhealthy," a concept Jordan Peterson has explored in one of his lectures.
The Austrian government created posters targeting young people, emphasizing that those who were unvaccinated would be excluded from social life. Like "Everyone goes to the party, except Ted, who is not vaccinated."
Yes, we have seen how quickly and easily such dynamics can unfold, especially when fear is involved. And fear was indeed spread - relentlessly - by state media and most politicians.
One particularly striking example I've witnessed involved a 12-year-old boy who went to his sports club, where he was a member. Knowing that unvaccinated individuals were prohibited from entering, he waited outside and politely asked adults to bring him his sports equipment so he could practice outdoors, which was allowed. However, the adults refused, simply stating, "Unvaccinated people are not allowed to enter the club." When his mother arrived, she was verbally attacked by a club member, who called her asocial and reckless for not vaccinating her child.
These individuals were completely unable to recognize or reflect on their actions. They failed to learn from history, and I believe I can at least partially explain why: While they were taught that National Socialism was bad, they never truly understood the psychology nor propaganda mechanisms that lead to mass psychosis and mass formation.
Mattias Desmet also called it out pretty early on. Mass formation psychosis is a perfect description
About a half hour in. There's a great irony in all of this: That "never again" attitude is the reason why it is we have so much more antisemitism in the modern day. Any discussion about Jews, Judaism, or Israel that wasn't blanket praise was aggressively persecuted with extreme prejudice. When I was a kid, you weren't even allowed to say that the Israeli government could make a mistake. The ADL has over 200 listed "hate symbols" many of which seems to be the most random string of phrases and numbers. They've done this to obsessive seek out and slander anybody who doesn't express unconditional praise.
If there is one thing that creates a contrarian reaction, that is being an unrelenting wet blanket.
While many have seen the signs for decades, the mask has come off and a lot of people no longer are fooled.
The ADL is only scratching the surface.
The ADL originated as a Freemason secret society.
There is nothing Jewish about the ADL. It is a left wing interest group first.
On the surface, that sounds logical but if to you listen to Jews though know anything about Jewish history, you'll immediately realise it's a post hoc rationalisation.
Jew Hatred is a Constant, the rest are Variables.
Again, I would direct you to all of Jewish History and the commentaries on it.
So to Thomas Sowell and his Middle Men Minorities argument and the history around that.
There's also much research on how bigots and fundamentalists dig in, in the face of irrefutable evidence.
It makes me think of this quote from Frederic Bastiat: " Men naturally rebel against the injustice of which they are victims. Thus, when plunder is organized by law for the profit of those who make the law, all the plundered classes try somehow to enter - by peaceful or revolutionary means - into the making of laws. According to their degree of enlightenment, these plundered classes may propose one of two entirely different purposes when they attempt to attain political power: Either they may wish to stop lawful plunder, or they may wish to share in it."
Sorry, James. I'm sick of the need to read between the lines. What actions are wrong? What values behind them are dangerous?
Are you against the expulsion of invaders? Do you dislike calling illegal immigrants "invaders"? Are you against being able to enact change? Do you think nationalism itself, no matter the values it's based upon, is the wrong value to hold?
Be direct or become irrelevant.
It's often between the lines where the meaning of things can be found.
In regards to your questions, additional questions or observations should be made:
For what purpose?
Who benefits? / Cui bono?
The how matters.
@emilymiller1792 that's the point... James keeps labeling things without a clear reason. I loved when he pointed out the actions of the woke, then the academic reasoning behind it. Now he says Trump is Hitler but doesn't point to the actions that make him one. Care to clarify?
Being direct opens one up to counter-argument. Better to shame and imply things like a 14 year old girl. Scaremongering videos built around anything resembling the thought process of a 14 year old girl can be immediately disregarded. There is no value there, only social posturing.
exactly so he’s now buying into the left narrative that Trump is hitler and conservatives are Nazis @@henriquesousa4994

58:00 There's a point your neglecting. The "others" the that the conservatives want gone are the people who define themselves by a hatred of America, its history, its values, and its people. It's kind of hard to say that we're being divided to weaponize our morals as a conspiracy theory when the group I'm dealing with have told me to commit sudoku multiple times because of who I am.
When we're talking about immigration and ethnicities, that's sort-of the big problem that we're dealing with. In the past (particularly before the national welfare system), people moved to America to be Americans. If they were chasing opportunity, they were doing it in a old liberal sense. Nowadays, they come here to squat on our welfare system and profess a constant hatred of America and Americans. That isn't just talk, either. They act maliciously, too.
This whole video seems like a hasty generalization. "You know who else had social division? Newtsies!" "You know who else had national pride? Newtsies!" "You know who else appealed to the kids? Newtsies!" The fact is that WW2 was complex, and we can draw endless parallels between anything and WW2, but that doesn't mean we're headed for WW2 part 2. If you keep doing this, you become a paranoid moral nag that loses everyone's respect, much like the ADL did.
Neveragainism is about disempowering the 'strong God's' of the west, the legacy of the greco-roman world and its absolutism.. therefore immigration, cultural diversity.. we don't want a strong dominant culture here it might lead to an ethnostate and they are only allowed in our favorite middle eastern country
America was built through Europeans creating a european culture. The "others" actively say "having your culture exist in America as the dominant one is exclusionary, now tear it down and make room in your space for our culture and ways". In no other case is an endemic culkture/population told they must convert, except for colonialism, and colonialism has always been seen as evil... until it happens TO whites by BIPOC.
_"This whole video seems like a hasty generalization."_
James is a Gen X, 1990's liberal Democrat.
Nothing more, nothing less.
His entire worldview is based on that.
I don’t think you’ve listened earnestly enough to the warning. What we have been subjected to over the past few years is begging for a counter reaction and why is it unreasonable to think that could take a dark and radical turn? I think James is highlighting the moral dangers of getting sucked into the very real threat of taking political revenge.
as you might know, James is just an Israel shill, he's only concerned with his paymaster.
Having listened through to the end, I can't help but recognize that you spend a lot of time *hinting* at the presence of things that I just don't actually see anywhere in the wild.
Where are these "memes" and "trolls" who are "only joking" about division and destroying "the other"? Because I never see them in the wild, yet you seem to imply that they are quite prominent.
What's more, where are the youth groups that are propagating these things?
Where are the party officials espousing them?
Where is this so called "woke right"?
Can you show me any of their *actual* propaganda? Can you point out who their prominent leaders are? Can you cite for me the dangerous rhetoric you have spent about 90 minutes warning about?
Because throughput this video you seem to be shadowboxing against a supposedly rising movement in right wing spaces, that I don't see anywhere when I go to right wing spaces.
To the best that I can tell, this "woke right" doesn't exist; or if it does, it is so small and shunned as to be of little or no consequence. Why are you worried about this somehow sweeping the country?
On twitter somewhere... Or campus protests where at least these misguided kids were against military violence and not micro aggression or nebulous climate scare. Oh wait those are the commies 😂 He is haplessly jumping the gun on a full pendulum swing when we just came from "racial looting is coof safe'. His time is over I used to listen intensely now just come for the lols
Do you follow Tucker Carlson or Candace Owens? They have millions of followers and the views they propagate are exactly what James is warning about. As I have a Jewish name, I receive hateful messages online regularly. It’s lucky for you that you don’t see it.
@elkegoldberg3876 I'm sorry you experienced this kind of behaviour, a lot of idiots out there eager to scape goat. the personalities you mentioned are quite explicit about the government of Israel and not Jewish people. What was the worst thing you heard?
@elkegoldberg3876
What precisely has Tucker Carlson said that falls into this category?
This is the same issue I'm having with the video, it's too nebulous for me to judge it.
Without specifics, how can I ever apprehend whether this trend is real; or mere scare mongering?
As long as this is kept nebulous, it's a rorschach test.
And, to put it bluntly, when I've seen every even *slightly* right leaning political movement denounced as the resurgence of the bad mustache party since the year 2000; I'm gonna need something more concrete than this if I'm expected to take it seriously.
How about Matt walsh?
Has he said anything like that?

I'd call those guys woke right, since that would just be another forever war if it had come to pass.
Never forget the Pro Hamas protests. Never forget what elite colleges taught those students. I won’t forget how the Jews in America were treated.
The problem, is that many of the teachers who taught those students for blame the west for evil colonialism.
That now turned on Israel.
Are many jews who had no problem as long as the students attacked the west.
It was only when it turned on them, they started complaining.
So, this is not how the Jews in America was treated. This is how all Europeans have been treated since the 1980's.

Been through the whole thing now. I can ease your mind a bit on the whole situation. Let me regale you with my perspective on the foundation and history of the alt-right. It's going to be a long one.
Our environment influences our politics. People in the country go conservative, because they live largely self-determined and independent lives, where family and friends are the most important things. To them, the government is just the tax man that comes around and demands a share your hard work. People in the city live in a world surrounded by infrastructure and social structures. To them, the government is the one who builds the roads, gives financial aid, pays for the school, etc. This lets the city people sever the close ties that hold the country people together, letting them focus more on their high ideals while being supported by the government. This is a general trend, as some exceptions apply. But, important thing to know here is that without a supplementary support structure, you'll end up going quite conservative.
So... what if you end up creating an environment where someone is, in a synthetic sense, on their own? We had that environment in the 90's and 2000's internet. It wasn't like how it is now, where 10 websites have basically everything you need. If you wanted to find stuff or do something, you were on your own. The early internet was a frontier of exploration, where you were likely to find just about anything. Weird sites, dangerous sites, useful sites, funny sites, you'd have to find them all by trial and error, or word of mouth. The internet was like the wild west, in that it was dangerous, unexplored territory. But, more important to this topic, it was like the wild west because you were on your own. There was nothing your parents, you police, or your government could do to help you if you got into trouble. In a similar vein, the busybodies and moral guardians had no say out there. You could be as mean as you wanted.
This has created a unique generational perspective, one that won't be replicated in the foreseeable future. In a very metaphorical sense, us 90's kids were raised in a potentially dangerous wilderness with neither the safety nor the oppression of morality. Previously, the conservatives of America had 3 different fundamental basis. You had the religious right, the historical/traditional right, and the libertarian right. This new generation of conservative, however, developed their ideas partly as a way to thrive in the frontier internet, separate from all of the previous cultural mechanisms. Thus, the "alt-right" was born, with a fierce sense of independence but a disdain for all moral condemnations. At that time, the political stance of any of these people could be best described as adversarial to anybody who would tell them what to do, no matter what side of the political spectrum was speaking. It just so happens that the dominant cultural perspective was that of the Left.
What we're witnessing right now is the inevitable progression of this group of people. There were some similarities between the woke left and the alt right, in the sense that they see the world from the perspective of power structures built primarily to sustain themselves. How could they not, after the life they have lived? However, that dialectic is where the similarities end. For one, the alt-right tends to believe in human nature. Second, they also have some notion of an ideal structure to the world. Third, they rarely stay alt for long. As part of their reaction to the cultural hegemony of the Left, they consume large amounts of right-wing literature, which causes them to go into the 3 fundamental basis of conservatism. Fourth, there is no uniformity of belief in the alt-right. They split into all different directions with their ideas, not even necessarily to the conservative direction in the end.
I am only so-much of an expert on WW2 history. From what I understand, the 1000 mile view is that Germany was saddled with the blame and the debt for WW1, which caused an economic depression and a great dissatisfaction among the German people. A couple of socialists used this animosity to gain power with pro-nationalist sentiment, but then began instituting their own form of socialism. A brand that focused primarily on race instead of economics. Using this and their adversarial nature with Poland, they began to institute their own globalist view, turned on the Jews as part of it, and the rest is common knowledge.
When I apply this knowledge to the current political structure, there is no way I see this going into the direction of some kind of racially based mass purge, or something similar to that of WW2. For one, there isn't some kind of unifying fervor for everyone to unite under. The Germans still had their pride as a nation and the ostracization of foreign powers. The disillusioned youth of America doesn't have this unification at all. They're just as likely to follow a priest as they are the dreaded Tate. Second, the cause of all these people that you're lamenting isn't truly some deep, ideologically based principles that the Newtsies had. They're from a generation who was adversarial to morality and existing power structures because they found them annoying. Their edgy tough-guy talk, if it isn't satirical provocation, is LARPing. Third, the living conditions are completely different. We may think we have it bad now, but this is nothing compared to post WW1 conditions. We still have the internet, we have "the herb", we have amenities and recreational activities in abundance. We no longer have to work to the bone just to get our daily bread.
This is a lot of words to say that I don't think edgy, contrarian fad personalities are going to cause a mass genocide. Now, time to see how many tries it will take before youtube stops auto-deleting this post.
I've saved your comment, INTP nerd. Thank you.

This seems a great book for our time. I don't see the MAGA movent turning into some kind of Trump-jugend or a bunch of brownshirts overnight but this book seems to give great insight about the working of a mind-virus combined with the counter cultural tendencies of teens and young adults.
MAGA is hardly what you need to worry about, and I would think that the tyrannical actions of the left during the pandemic would have proved that to you. MAGA is ALL about smaller, less oppressive government and personal freedom. How does that translate to brownshirts to you?
The brownshirts will come from the democrats, they are already much more violent and radical.
I think Trump somewhat distanced himself from it, but they are there simmering in the background to try and gobble up support from the main grassroots movement.. just look at the H1B debacle.

1:18:00 There's an irony in the whole message about letting one come to their own conclusions. The implied conclusion you're making here is that we're not allowed to make jokes, period.
Jokes are generally made to release anxiety held either consciously or unconsciously. If you’re constantly making jokes about a particular people, then it means you are spending a lot of energy on worrying about them. Jokes are good, great even. We get tense about certain things and it’s good to relieve that pressure in a positive way. But if you’re constantly joking about one subject then it could mean there’s a darker animosity underneath.

@@acmhfmggru he made 0 arguments against Trump. You are a bot.
The murder and persecution of Germans between the wars in Poland and Czechoslovakia was a not an excuse, but a dynamic in the events that followed.
National Socialism is as Socialist as Marxism and Fascism. Critical Social Justice is Socialist too. Socialism is NOT left or right wing because it is not in anyway liberal, and liberalism is unique in it's ability to debate and elect to adopt a variety of solutions to problems.
Right wing liberalism is defined as minimal state interference in private business and relationships between private people.
Left wing liberalism is defined as maximal interjection of the state in private relationships and business while retaining democracy and freedom of speech with a legal system and laws that doesn't descriminate between individuals.
Trump's use of the state to manipulate the economy (tariffs) and create an underclass of citizens from the illegal immigrants is redolent of other nationalisms like the Fascists and the separate but equally socialist National Socialists and Marxists.
James seems to think Trump is leading an antisemitic pogrom - I don't see it. It's the critical Social Justice movement pushing antisemitism as part of its support for the oppressed brown Palestinians.
I don't get where Jame's is coming from. Trump moved the American embassy to Jerusalem, he got the Saudis and Emirates to view the Israelis as a bulwark against the Islamism that the Iranians are funding. Trump's daughter has married a Jewish man.
Am I missing something?
Your analysis starts to go astray at the point where you bring up Trump. Tariffs appear to be being used as a negotiation tactic to garner concessions from other countries. He is not creating some kind of oppressor/oppressed class dynamic by enforcing the actual law (instead of actively facilitating its circumvention as the previous administration was). As you note, his track record also demonstrates clearly that he is not antisemitic: he's not who James is talking about.
James is talking about post-liberal individuals who pretend to be under the banner of what you define as right wing liberalism (a phenomenon James calls "LARPing as conservatives"), and have embedded themselves among the conservative populist movement to ride its momentum and use it to push their own goals. They purport to hate communism/woke but adopt their tactics for their own brand of collectivist conflict theories. He has been explaining this at length in his videos and online posts for a while now.
@Exa4096 James has been asserting there is a right wing woke for some time, but if you aren't American your understanding of what conservatism is is very different, and it just doesn't translate.
Here in Australia the Liberal party promotes the right wing of liberalism and stands in opposition to the left wing liberalism of the Labor party.
The Liberal party when voted in are always in coalition with the National party, which promote the interests of primary industries in rural regions.
There is no conservative party because being conservative is not a political philosophy, it's a resistance to change, not a promotion of an ideal.
On the topic of tariffs, Trump may be using the threat of tariffs to bend foreign government's policies like a stick to the carrot of "trade agreements".
But the very idea that a tariff is a valid tool of trade is intrinsically anti free market and state interventionist.
I understand Trump using the tariff cudgel to bring into line states that engage in hidden state subsidies of their private sector through state subsidies.
For example, China does not charge for mail on exported goods.
But as a normalised feature of international trade, protectionism impoverishes countries that are otherwise competitive.
Tariffs are effectively the 'mirror image' of state subsidies - both responses warp and distort the free market.
This makes it impossible to discern what the true value of goods is, it's why state command economies fail.
We'll see if Trump frightening the bejeesus out of Peru's President (for refusing to accept returned migrants), can be as effective when it's taxing imported iPhones from China.
I'm concerned he's steering the US economy into iceberg territory at full speed, and it's not an icebreaker he's in command of
I don't remember much of my education on the Holocaust, but what I do remember is we were taught (in spirit, never explicitly) that the Nazis were space aliens, that was an absurdity. We didn't get taught Weimar or Hitler's decent into... Hitler. It was all very remote, inhuman by the quality of any party's humanity never being touched (the Jews were taught as absolute victims, which is also dehumanizing).
I think that this could also be titled ‘how a movement takes over by becoming a religion’…

The thing that is confusing me, and confusing me *very much,* about this entire schizoid rant of James' is: No one is going 'there.' No one is even close to going 'there.' Not on the right, anyway. The left is very close to going to a worse place than 'there,' that I am concerned about. But as someone who never has been, and never wanted to be on the right, I am not concerned about where the right is going. Yet. But I am deeply concerned about where the left is going. Because they *are* going 'there.'

Thanks for clarifying this point. I do harbour concerns that seeking an antidote to liberalism's elevation of the individual over the family and extended family lays people open to exploitation by the artificial "family" of the state. This was the dream and common thread of all Socialisms.
There is a problem that lies in the deracination of people from a true community of people with a common interest, and the introduction of the state as a surrogate family (nationalism).
I am reading Larry Siedentrop's "The Invention of the Individual". It goes into great detail to illustrate how the family was once the building block of the broader society.
The introduction of a Christian God who demands moral duty from His followers usurped the family from it's central position in the private realm and allowed the European Enlightenment and Liberal democracy to eject the nuclear family from it's central position.
I am very confused that Americans view "Conservatives" as "right" of centre. To me they are not espousing any liberal ideal other than dragging their feet in terms of the progressivism project.
True right wing liberalism is the retreat of the state from it's interference in our private relationships with each other, and in our private business activity.
Trump is acting as a left wing pro state anti globalist.
I can see fundamental clashes between Trump's nationalism and Javier Miles and Elon Musk, who I consider proper right wingers.
Minimise the income, size and influence of the state over people's private relationships and private industry.
Musk wants to import workers and reduce government size, reach and cost (DOGE) while Trump wants to throw around the State's weight to subsidise American corporations with tariffs to increase the value of the dollar on international currency markets to reduce the size of the debt.
A very left wing statist manipulation of the free market justified (I presume) on the basis that states like China and India already subsidise their own industries and businesses as Trump is now proposing.
My eyes are on Milea and Argentina, I just hope he can maintain the trust and goodwill of the Argentinian people and demonstrate freedom lies in doing things for yourself free of state interference and "support".

You are not fooling anyone. WW2 is perhaps one of the most well-documented conflicts in human history. No other conflict has been so thoroughly picked apart for analysis than WW2. People who frame the well established history of the conflict as "80+ years of propaganda" have never seriously engaged with the subject in good faith and don't understand how the field of history works and it shows. Daryl Cooper is one such example of a "fake historian" and Nazi apologist and is contrasted against the well versed and well researched Victor Davis Hanson, an actual historian who along with Niall Ferguson have rebuffed Darly Coopers claims.

Amazing podcast. I bought the book and can’t wait to read it. Thank you for the recommendation! I have a teen and I will have her read it as well. My dad used to recommend things like this to me when he was alive. He dedicated his personal time researching the horrors of Nazism so I grew up learning about the Holocaust from a young age. He could always explain these big subjects with so much knowledge. I loved learning from him and miss that intellectual exchange and ‘story telling’ that our relationship always gave me. Even though you and I are about the same age I feel the same sort of comfort and intellectual satisfaction from listening to your podcast, especially when you take apart papers, books, or philosophy…I always feel like I learned so much because you explain so well and take your time explaining in detail with the harsh truth but also with hope. I always leave with the same satisfaction I used to get after a great conversation about history with my father. And I miss him very much and that aspect of my life which we shared. So listening to you means very much to me. It touches my heart and inspires my mind. Thank you.

James is just fine with identity politics and being "awake" to oppression - as long as we talking about this one, seemingly very special group. Care to explain, James?
James has gone from devout anti-woke warrior that estranged all his friends, like Helen Pluckrose, to doing these shows out of 2016 "crying person in the street" opposition to the right. I wish you’d be a lot clearer about exactly what you’re saying, James because I see things from two different angles and each angle is so different that it completely changes everything.
To be short, it’s either about Jews or Islam. The far right has both of these in their sights. Maybe me being in Britain gives me a different perspective on things but I can’t tell what you are talking about exactly.
Edit, so further in the video you do become more specific. My judgement was heavily influenced on me being British and living in Britain and I do think that fact makes a massive difference. Over here we have had to deal with the so called “grooming gangs” which frankly completely changes the story. We’ve had to deal with certain individuals who have built huge audiences, people such as Dilly Hussain and Mohamed Hijab who are openly hostile towards the native people.
Our troubles in the old world are not the troubles of the new world though they do overlap.
I personally believe that men and women relate to authority in much different ways, maybe especially so in their teenage years . That being said, it seems like her book would only address a part of the phenomenon.

TL;DR, It's not enough to compare similarities, but we also need specific key differences that separate a conservative from a fascist/Woke Right.
As someone who has followed and appreciated James' work for a while, and has also kept tabs on people who could possibly be "Woke Right", I'm kind of on the fence. I have no interest in fascism, and I think the Woke Right is real, but I think the latter group does make some good points that are hand-waved by others in mainstream thought. I genuinely don't want to fall for some trap, but we need more specifics on what separates fascism from a more hardline but valid conservative stance. This will help to spot saboteurs, but won't undermine true conservative voices either.
For example, the authors of the Federalist Papers wrote about how cultural homogeneity was an advantage for our country. So while I see your connection between that stance and the fascist "scapegoating the other", I'm not convinced that holding that stance is fascistic, because our Founders held it.
I will say that specifics help a LOT. I did see a lot of "AIPAC" stuff, but when you mentioned it was the #173 of all the lobbies, it helped me see that their claims were factually incorrect. That helps, because it is giving more clarifying information to dispel the propaganda. What helps is engaging and dispelling, rather than hand-waving the subject because distasteful groups had similar ideas. It actually will drive more people to their side if we do that.
I think the threat you're bringing up is real, I've seen some pretty questionable things from some people, and I appreciate you bringing awareness to it. But I think pointing out some similarities isn't enough. We need to know what the key differences are. And the mark of a conservative can't be defined on liberal terms. But that doesn't make a conservative a fascist.
Your message is important both to remind us of what happened and what is happening, but I am massively conflicted about this particular story. The narrator is unclear about her motives regarding her parents. Is she rebelling against the bourgeoisie parents? Is she at the same time accepting their thoughtless antisemitism? Why is it worse that she accepted the National Socialist ideology but her friend’s family accepted the Globalist Marxists?
I am not quarrelling with your message. However, I am from a generation that was taught that Germans were uniquely evil. You are not saying that. But when I listen to the German language news, I can hear that many Germans still feel this way. Many panic when confronted with non-leftist views. They think that the Nazis were far-Right.
Christian Nationalism is a danger that we need to be armed against. That said, a better example of what happened in Germany is another religious group who have a different book. These are people who are also very nice, kind to their neighbors and apparently tolerant of other beliefs. As we speak, individuals and groups who fully imbibe of their religion and its teachings suddenly commit acts of extreme and (apparently) random violence. I speak of Islam. Do not forget, that not only have they been happy to form a temporary alliance with the Woke Left, the religion has much more affinity with fascism.
James Lindsay: can you do a video on “Project 2025”? I’m looking for an objective informational video on this subject. I bought a couple of books. But trying to find a conservative view on it has come up with mostly nothing. Trying to make the American ship to turn around to more conservative laws and thinking, would be hard. The fringe is just screaming about how dangerous this is. So far what i have been able to get on it, does not seem bad at all. However, i haven’t been able to find the 900 page book for sale. Ok, but when are we going to address those criticisms and claims on things like free trade, immigration, and others that are substantive like you have pointed out. I understand the part of people spurring on hate tactics and such, but what about the actual substantive debates. At first they came for James Lindsey, and I did not speak up because... Lol.
I disagree as usual. I have priorities. One is to unoppress those oppressed by Woke and possibly get them reparations. Repeating history similar to what you mentioned is not my first option to support. But, I would join that side if they have the most power to stop the worse side.
It all begins with the 1848 revolutions that swept across all of Europe. It forced the feudal elite to grant rights, guarantees, and liberal freedoms to the population, ultimately ending serfdom. To recover his power, the nobility started to use propaganda to promote ideas of their inherent superiority as a justification to rule Europe.
Most of the European nobility is Germanic, as Germanic tribes invaded and took control of most of Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire.
To maintain control, they also infiltrated socialist movements, which they saw as the primary threat to their power. They financed figures like Marx and Lenin. Marxism is used as a tactic to restore feudal structures under a different guise.
The Fabian Socialists, an arm of the British monarchy, use a coat of arms of a wolf in sheep’s clothing, representing their deceptive nature. They present themselves as the opposite of what they truly are. They take pride in their manipulative tactics, misleading people into supporting the restoration of feudal systems while pretending to oppose them.
The ideology of the german painter was not an accident. It was a system promoted by the nobility, and after its collapse, it was reimagined into a modern form, disguising it with liberalism, and this dialectical mix is what you call W [ W word Im not allowed to write]. They use division as a tool, as they have always done, claiming to support marginalized groups while simultaneously framing those groups as responsible for W oppression. It’s the same strategy: the wolf in sheep’s clothing.
W is a creation of the "[LARGEST CITY IN HESSE] SCHOOL", which are nzi rescued after the end of the war and sent to California, to rebrand the nzi ideology as "the opposite", and to blame the croimes of the nobility as the fault of "[certain skin color] people". And they pretend to "fight against oppression", but apparently the nobility has nothing to do with it, and is never denounced, criticized, or talked about..
