I'm currently in High School and it's just horrible, Hockey and Your videos are my escape from the rest of the world, thank You so much for all you do

Don't worry. It's tricky. I'm a fella from Europe but anyway, this should apply to you just as well. My elementary school was terrible. My high school was awesome. My life is great now. Life just has his seasons, just like hockey does. You'll come through it all stronger than before and become a better man in the long run. Everything's gonna be just fine, trust me.

Hold strong. I’m not gonna lie, even in the working world, I think school is EXPONENTIALLY worse than adulthood.

I have to say, Shan. There were parts of this that got me extremely choked up. Between the ages of 13 to 15 were undoubtedly the darkest in my life.
Thank you so much for sharing. I hope you realize how much better you make many of our days. You're a great man.

Shannon, I can relate to so much of what you said; I almost feel like your female doppelgänger. I went through an early puberty in 5th grade and was bullied mercilessly. Like you, my schoolmates (esp. the boys) all agreed that being seen with me was a social liability. Remember those ragers kids would have when their parents were out of town, the ones where EVERYBODY showed up? I always found out about them after the fact, because I was never invited. The only reason I had a boyfriend my junior and senior year was because he moved from out of town and I nabbed him before the other kids got a chance to tell him I was social kryptonite! I, too, tried to find my people at church. The problem with most churches is, they’re so geared towards marriage and children; they have no clue on how to handle a single childless person like me. Despite going every Sunday, singing in the choir, and participating in Bible study, folks always treated me like a guest instead of a full-fledged member of the congregation. I was never asked to serve as an elder or join in any important discussions like the budget or the 5-year plan. I’m now 65 and find myself in the odd position of having zero friends. I do have what I call “work buddies,” ie, colleagues with whom I’ve shared some personal information, but we don’t have the kind of relationship where I can call them and say, “Hey, you wanna’ go see a movie?” I know it sounds depressing, and sometimes it is, but for the most part I’ve made my peace with being a loner. I appreciate candid revelations like yours; even though we’ll likely never meet, I can identify with your story and thus feel less alone. Thank you.

My wife and I moved to an island over 12 years ago and knew NOBODY. We found different interest groups and have now made lots of friends in the different groups. One group is a pottery that I joined in my 70s, having never done pottery previously. Another group is Zoom Bible study and the people are wonderful and accepting.

Like a lot of people, your story definitely resonates with me. I was miserable all through high school and well beyond. Had a lot of the same social and home situations as well. You're right when you say that things can/do get better. And here's hoping that the things you alluded to at the end of the video pass soon.

Wow, that feeling of not belonging anywhere basically defines my grade 7-12 experience. Sometimes it also defines a lot of my adult life too. This totally resonates with me. Thanks :)

Great video Shannon, and much appreciated. I think your story is very similar to many of us - I can relate to many of the topics you brought up today, including high school relations and current relations with friends/associates and trying to organize get togethers that don't end up happening. I do want to add, even though I'm in Ontario, if you invited me over I'd do my best to come. I feel like I've really gotten to know you through your videos both here and THG and I could see us enjoying sitting on the deck in the backyard and just shooting the sh*t for an afternoon.

Thank you for sharing. I'm nearly 40 and feel like I could've made a very similar video myself. Similar issue with friends and my time in school growing up.
I also like to think your family and mine would be friends. Watch some Traitors, hang out with cats (we have 7 of our own, and 9 fosters right now). Plus the whole hockey thing. Much love to you and everyone.
    LGRW.

I had a pretty crappy school experience, too. I wanted out of school by grade 9 and was depressed in high school. Bullying was part of it, but it just sucked. Now that I'm an adult, I've been blessed beyond my comprehension. The only thing I'm missing, it seems, is finding a nice Christian girl to marry. That has alluded me thus far.
I'm really sorry about your crappy friends. I can't understand how so many stand you up. You definitely don't deserve that and seem like a real solid guy to me. Thanks for continuing to share your story!

I didn't get picked on a lot in school, but the weirdest experience was people acting like they don't know you. People I had been friends with since we were kids would have classes with me in high school and not say a word to me. Not because I was a nerd, but everyone was so on edge about who they talked to it seemed like.

I relate so much to the floor hockey stuff. One time, the gym teacher made half the gym for basketball and the other half for hockey. The six quietest guys in the class, including me, went to the hockey side. By the end of class, the people on the other side were sitting on the benches watching us. It was like we were all trying to prove something. My team won by a goal. That's a high school memory I'll never forget.

My cousin had the best response many years ago about his 20th high school reunion: “I couldn’t stand these people 20 years ago, nothing’s really changed.” Perfect. My response too to high school. University was such a trip though! What a blast.
