They use Ride of the Valkyries to tie it in to the original opera. The problem with that is Ride of the Valkyries wasn't in The Rhine Gold; it's from The Valkyrie. That's like playing the soundtrack to The Prince of Egypt in a movie about Adam & Eve.
TheAtticus Productions Worse, Ride of the Valkyries is also generally popular in action movies, so its presence here does little to put Wagner's signature on it.
Do you think Sage will review the other OVa series with Captain Harlock? Like Arcadia of my Youth? Given how much he likes him you'd think he'd review them. I think there's at least 3? This series doesn't show just how umm.. *legendary* Harlock is with the ladies^_-- to warrent Swaves worship. Lesse I think theres: Arcadia of My Youth (Movie) Endless Road/Orbit SSX Endless Odyssey the original run of Space Pirate Captain Harlock Then Captain Harlock - Mystery of the Arcadia this isn't in order though^^; The point is, Aside form Saga. there is a plethora of things Harlock was part of. This excludes the reboot movie.
Ragamuffin didn't even sound bothered when he got shot, sounded more annoyed like the guy ruined his favorite shirt. I guess he really liked that bulletproof vest. That ending was priceless. RAUGHHHH.
"Life is but a walking shadow; a poor player, that struts and frets his hour on the stage, and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, filled with sound and fury, signifying nothing." Macbeth (I love this quote.)
That was a good analysis of Shakespeare, Tolkein and the anime. Boy, could it have been a lot better. This could have been Harlock's version of Giant Robo! This attempt was mediocre!
Dear flaming penguins from hell... Did that conversation between Whatsherblondeface and Whatsherscaredface really need to be that bad? Its barely six minutes in and I want Sage to get his money back for this. Scaredface:"Are you talking about what I think you are talking about?" Blondeface:"Yes I am! Now let me explain it for the air between us as we already know what it is but the air does not." ScaredFace:"Okay but only if we repeat its name over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over -" Blondeface:"Over and over and over and over and over and over-" Audience:"Shut the fuck up and shoot something! Or kiss. One of the two."
Nadia Secret of Blue Water does a good interpretation of 10,000 leagues under the sea Also I feel that France also has had a strong influence in Japanese culture, like Tokyo Tower is a similar shape to the Eiferal Tower. Also Captain Harlock is similar in design to Captain Nemo
I remember renting this thing from a Block Buster over a decade ago. It was the most exhausting disappointing thing I had ever seen at that point in my life.
"Whatever you do, don't make the thing that will destroy the universe" *Makes the thing that destroys the universe* "Welcome aboard Harlock's crew, here's a gun and your job now is to hang around this hot time mage chick"
Sage isn't kidding, this series is horribly fucking boring. I remember buying it the second it was available from Suncoast, going past Pizza Hut to get a pizza to enjoy it with, then getting home and being sooooo disappointed in how dull and lifeless the movie was. I was honestly thinking of some way of taking it back, but the collector in me said, "You've got plenty of movies and games you don't watch or play anymore but still display. Put this one among them and forget it too." I really wanted to like this since I was really big into Leiji Matsumoto's work back in the early 00's, but this movie was worse than going to the DMV on it's busiest day.
woaw, are you talking about the serie or the actual movie? If you want the real serie, go read the original manga, it's easy to find because this was an online publication (and this is the longest harlock serie)
+Katojana Aleksielsis I thought it was kind of unfocused. I remember liking the scale of it all, and how eerie the ship was with that black smoke constantly coming from it, but that's it. I can not remember jack squat about the plot points, characters or settings.
actually the original adaptation was auto-censored by Leiji (and the other one, don't remember his name) to dodge a possible block in japan, the 2013 movie actually fused together endless odyssey (fucking darkness), ring of Nibelungen (the real manga one, not this... thing) and some parts of the pre-serie publication, like "captain switch outta nowhere". so yeah the movie is actually good at Harlock's character, but I can't accept they put a fucking ftl system for gaia's ships, it's so much bullshit for the Leijiverse ;).
Kiyan Shahab tell me a thing, in the english version is it even implied that Raflesia is actually a "godess" who terraformated earth (but yeah if you saw endless odyssey you know this is not the only thing) and created/educated later the life who grown on it? (and created/used the mazone race for her own purpose), but to say it the film would be placed chronologically in the middle of the series, as SSX/space pirate/endless odyssey (+râmetal end + "uchuu senkan death shadow") continuity shows the last Harlock trying to end the cycle (maybe the last anime with arcadia VII will close this thing)
I know this episode was about this particular Harlock story, but I'm surprised you didn't go more into how there are at least a few good ones out there that we're better off watching. Or at least gave an honorable (or dishonorable) mention of the latest CGI movie, personally I thought it was awesome, though being my first real exposure to the Harlock series I was a bit lost, but overall it was still entertaining.
I've been trying to put together Harlock's outfit for a month now. I really only got the cape. Making the shirt with the zipper down the arms is a level of difficulty like playing Dark Souls for the first time.
he's actually older than earth in the orginal mangas (and even before it, he's a war veteran who fought in "more battles than there is stars"), but since he's actually resurrecting himself by training Tadashi, it surely doesn't count ;)
really after the first two seasons of harlock it never managed to make another great addition everything after it was plain bad specially the last movie which fucked up his character the there was other ovas and movies that didn't really do much of worth and then there were spin offs which i liked like gun frontier but i can understand how it fell flat for some people as it completely changes the setting i just wish it didn't end on a god damn cliff hanger it never continued
I literally screamed when sage announced this review the last episode, never in my life have I thirsted for a pirate before as much as captain jack sparrow. now let's see if I eat those words.
Interesting review Sage, as always. One thing though: While it could be totally possible that Tolkien was influenced by Wagner's opera while writing The Hobbit und subsequently The Lord of the Rings, I would guess that him and Wagner both draw on the same source material (albeit Tolkien only lifted a few elements, as you said) - the Nibelungenlied. Tolkien was very interested in germanic languages and the nordic mythology - so it is more likely that Tolkien draw from the various sources of nordic mythology instead of Wagner himself. Tolkien was competent enough in German to directly influence the translation of The Lord of the Rings, i.e. he suggested to translate Elves not with Elfen (to certain degree a synonym for Faeries back in the days) but with Elben, derived from Alben. Alberich. Well, full circle. Sorry for nitpicking (it was more meant as an FYI okay?) but I'm fighting with a paper for medieval german literature studies right now, which is why I have all this facts a little more present right now. And of course because I'm a total nerd. The anime definetly draw from Wagner and not from the medieval source, sooo... yeah... I was totally pointless, right?
You forgot the complete stupidity of Albrecht letting Wotan's defence nodes obliterate the armada he spend YEARS building before using the ring to instantly destroy said nodes.
+Max .Shaver He's a character that was really popular in Japan during the 80s but never really made the trip overseas. He still has a cult following though.
I'm so glad I watched the original Captain Harlock all of last week, and the OVA, while I know it's a different continuity (maybe? Sorta?), it indeed could've been so much better. But it was doomed from the start, I don't think any knowledge of the characters would've helped nor worsened it. Although the dub made me realize just how miscast David Brimmer was as Tochiro, and that Nathan Price was replaced by Maddie Blaustein probably for good reason.
+the white knight rises Still on hiatus, but Dominic and I have talked about it, and we may be doing it again at the end of the year. We just still have to plan things out first.
He can rant about this all he wants. It's still a good little series with a good voice cast. And once again, the Yamato makes a cameo appearance. Thought your Outlaw Star reference was amusing, though.
Groan now I'm going to have flashbacks. I actually paid full price back in the day for this. Almost put me off of Harlock forever. Thank Haruhi I have Arcadia of my Youth to wash the memories of this out of my mind. Good review.
perhaps Harlock may be so in anime, but only Nikki Minaj is our TRUE Lord and saviour. also, get Gabe an award or something for his delivery of that line.
Ahhh, more badly pronounced german. I love you Sage, never change. :P In all honesty though, good episode. Every episode with Harlock in it, bad anime or good anime, is worth my time.
The reason this felt like this is because viewers of this should be familiar with the Leijiverse characters and know them to some extent. If you don't know who Captain Harlock is by now, you might not want to see it. Then again, I didn't get much of it when I watched it either. I'm more of a Galaxy Express 999 fan.
Question: How does the fact that most tragedies in literature come from characters making unsound decisions be considered a "flaw" ? Tragedies are, in essence, cautionary tales. The interest of this genre comes from the consequences of mistakes ! It is the whole point of tragedy ! Therefore, it cannot be considered a writing flaw. We, modern audience, expect characters in fiction to always make good or at least understandable decisions because we are fed up with conveniently stupid characters born from lazy writing (insert Prometheus reference here) but the bad decisions from Tragedy are not of the same kind ! They usually come from selfishness, pride, lust or greed. Mostly they come from personnal instincts overcoming reason, the good ol' greek Hubris or the christian deadly sins. Human beings have a long history of making bad decisions ! We CAN make bad decisions but think they were good the time we did it, later realizing our mistakes. Without error, without mistake, there is no story worth telling. At least in the classic tragedy genre. So no, not a technical flaw but a volontary decision based on the moral ground the genre stands on. But yeah, Harlock Saga seems pretty boring and stupid indeed ! XD
one of the problems that Harlock faces is when he gets adapted into stories retaining no consistency of characters; it's like if Kirk was like Picard in one Star Trek movie, and #3 just had spock back in the series as if Wrath of Kahn never happened
Anyone remember watching this on the Toonami Reactor online stream? Also, why don't you censor the boobs in the ancient pictures? Isn't that a bit hypocritical? Also, in case you don't know about Toonami's different streaming services, here's the rundown. *Toonami Reactor* - Ran from 2001-2002. It was like Netflix, but it only had four shows: Harlock Saga, Patlabor, Star Blazers, and Dragon Ball Z. It had a whole bunch of games on it and character profiles for all four shows. *Toonami Jetstream* - Ran from 2006-2009. It was like a Toonami channel, only it was an online stream. It had many original series, such as Hikaru no Go, and a few others. It ran for the next four months after Toonami ended, and all of the shows that were still going on Toonami finished their runs here. If they didn't, then they would move to Cartoon Network, and if not in America, then in some other area. Like, for instance, Blue Dragon finished its run on Cartoon Network in Pakistan. *Toonami Preflight* - Runs from 2015-present. Toonami Preflight has the previous night's Toonami broadcast on a 24-hour loop on Sunday, then for the rest of the week, it has six-day marathons of different Toonami shows that Toonami has the streaming rights to. At 7:30 PM, Toonami has its Toonami Preflight stream, where the two creators of Toonami talk about the development history in different Toonami shows and have different top 3 lists, as well as Steve Blum vlogging about his job and Dana Swanson (the voice of Sara) doing reviews of mobile phone games and reviews of anime that came out before 2000 (since shows that came out before 2000 are not allowed to air on Toonami by Adult Swim.)
I know its not really what you do nut have you seen the new CGI Harlock saga? If so what did you think? I see it pop up from time to time and I always talk myself out of watching it
Are we all ignoring the fact that there was another Harlock anime that came out in the 70s and was actually good.
I just realised that this is the same animation style used for Daft Punk's "Interstellar 5555"...
Leiji Matsumoto was a gift upon us. May he rest in peace.
They use Ride of the Valkyries to tie it in to the original opera. The problem with that is Ride of the Valkyries wasn't in The Rhine Gold; it's from The Valkyrie. That's like playing the soundtrack to The Prince of Egypt in a movie about Adam & Eve.

+RunyaEithelNar It's pretty much the only really memorable tune Wagner ever wrote, that overhyped POS...
TheAtticus Productions Worse, Ride of the Valkyries is also generally popular in action movies, so its presence here does little to put Wagner's signature on it.
Harlock rewrites the complete Ring cycle, as Harlock is clearly the "new man" Siegfried who brings about the Twilight of the Gods.
Captain Harlock doesn't fuck his sister and isn't the child of incest, either. Guess that's why it's INSPIRED by the piece.
harlock episode 1: the phantom menace of the one ring
Sage's reviews are actually what inspired me to go and watch the original Space Pirate Captain Harlock.
And now to wait a month for the next Anime Abandon.

Enjoy your month off Sage, we'll see you in October!

I wish he would talk about the ending credit songs for anime because those songs are probably the crowning jewels for this anime.

Try Gun Frontier, it has Harlock as a cowboy
He would tear that shit apart. Harlock actually started as that cowboy in manga form, btw.
Damnit Sage i was about to go to sleep!
Zachary Erickson "Time Zones"
I'm surprised loki didn't sleep with anyone in this story!

+MarsGundam Well, since it's based on Wagner's Ring it's only fair that it is as boring as watching a turd dry out and fossilize...
I've never heard of Harlock, but he looks pretty fine.
"Shiny but gold." I see what you did there.
WAIT...so the ONLY reason as to why Shakespeare is SO revered...IS LITERALLY BECAUSE HE MAKES EVERYTHING FANCY??
Yup
Enough time to watch the video hadn't passed... And I already saw a thumbs down.
This world... -_-
Well Sage saying a pretty well known anime is shit is a good way to get a knee jerk dislike
Hey sage. Did you see the 3D Harlock movie?
I really liked that movie, haven't seen anything of Harlock before.

3:52 So like Power Ring from DC's Forever Evil miniseries?
I won't lie, I've searched for over a decade to find a Harlock to cosplay with my Emeraldas. Never found him. :/
+Amelia Bee I'v got the hair for it. But I'll have to shave, so that's a bit of a commitment for me.
I've been trying to put together Harlock's outfit for a month now. I really only got the cape. Making the shirt with the zipper down the arms is a level of difficulty like playing Dark Souls for the first time.
You had me at No.4 Caster shell
😂🤣😭
Harlock is a badass.
Harlock has ungodly charisma? So, it's at least 20?
+Crowley9
At *_Least_*
+Crowley9 Harlock is an epic level character...so..higher than 20.
he's actually older than earth in the orginal mangas (and even before it, he's a war veteran who fought in "more battles than there is stars"), but since he's actually resurrecting himself by training Tadashi, it surely doesn't count ;)

Just because someone tells someone not to do something, doesn't mean they will listen, especially if they happen to be a child.
Andvaranaut! Its like a debt you cannot pay but a debt everyone wants to pay. Like a sort of cruel destiny.
You forgot the complete stupidity of Albrecht letting Wotan's defence nodes obliterate the armada he spend YEARS building before using the ring to instantly destroy said nodes.
Am I the only one who doesn't know who Captain Harlock is?
+Max .Shaver nope i don't either.
There's this wonderful place called Wikipedia. Look him up on it.
+Armageddon3035 You both need to fix that pronto. The 42-episode TV series is the best place to start.

Thought your Outlaw Star reference was amusing, though.

My father enjoyed the Harlock anime, when he was young.
Well, I guess I have to postpone going to dreamland for about a 20 minutes
Scottie Ray was awesome voicing in this OVA.
I only know Harlock from a CGI subbed film I caught on Netflix. He didn't leave much of an impression.
14:23 "I should get... SOMETHING!" I gave you a Like.
Thanks, Sage, have a nice vacation!
And here's the horrible thing: THIS WAS MY INTRODUCTION TO HARLOCK.
Loved the Wizard People, Dear Reader reference you slipped in there. :D
Captain Tylor. Please pleas pleas pleas. Go on. You know you want too.
Ahhh, more badly pronounced german. I love you Sage, never change. :P
In all honesty though, good episode. Every episode with Harlock in it, bad anime or good anime, is worth my time.

a month without anime abandon!? NOOOOOO!
I think I'll have to watch the original Harlock to get where your coming from with this.
It's on Crunchy Roll and I think Hulu might have it, too.
+Henny Zhi Harlock is the shit! its awesome/ dont let this title scar his name for you.
"Y'see this gold...? DON'T FORGE IT! It's the RHEINGOLD you FOOL!"
The Rinegold is at the center of the universe... give or take fifty feet.
Mime and tochiro die I don’t know if that makes you happy . But that was hilarious on how you made the video. And the drawing near the ending lol.
Look at how much gold there was! Ragamuffin could've forged a dozen rings with that!
Why is the Rhine Gold in space there when it's supposed to be somewhere at the Rhine?

I'm curious on sage's thoughts on 'Harlock: space pirate'. that 3d animated film that came out a few years back.
I don't understand why everyone's complaining about Harlock Saga. I enjoyed it.
Being bored to aggravation... somehow this phrase conjures the most recent mad max movie into memory... hmm.
So the Kid basically pulled a Magnus the Red and did what he was not told to do because Alberik said he'd be a little bottom bitch if he didn't
October... I wasn't expecting a season break till the end of the year. Oh well. Enjoy your time off, bud.
one of the problems that Harlock faces is when he gets adapted into stories retaining no consistency of characters; it's like if Kirk was like Picard in one Star Trek movie, and #3 just had spock back in the series as if Wrath of Kahn never happened
Stretching the Hobbit to 3 moves was a cash-grabby mistake.
October!?
Oh god, the wait is real...
Am I the only one getting flashes of Interstellar 555 in their head whilst watching this review?
One ring to enrage them all.
One ring to exposit.
One ring that Sage finds dull,
So he buried this show in his closet! ;-]
I thought that Tolkien got the dragon and its horde from Beowulf, even down to the dragon going berserk because of the theft of a cup.
LOL at the it doesn't happen through most of the anime, it happens through all the anime.
The Albatross? Fuck I have NEVER heard a reference to that.
Endless Odyssey, nuff said. Harlock... you can get out of the doghouse :)
Harlock + Sage. I ship it.
Harage? Salock?
excel saga was still harlock's best appearance.
What about the Heroic Legend of Arlsan OVA? that would be nice, especially comparing it to the new 2015 version.
Gosh, and I thought the CGI film bore me to tears.
Shamanic Princess...DO IT!!
Bennet needs to have a crossover with Brad where they review Bible Black.
I feel he should talk about Desert Punk, I personally like it, however I can see some things others might not like.
Oh boy this is going to be good.
It is October now and still no new video.
Some of the design of the characters were used for daft punk

At 7:30 PM, Toonami has its Toonami Preflight stream, where the two creators of Toonami talk about the development history in different Toonami shows and have different top 3 lists, as well as Steve Blum vlogging about his job and Dana Swanson (the voice of Sara) doing reviews of mobile phone games and reviews of anime that came out before 2000 (since shows that came out before 2000 are not allowed to air on Toonami by Adult Swim.)
Wake me up when September ends...
Come on Sage, give us some Samurai X!
If redundency is its flaw, couldn't it be fixed by editing it down into a single showing?
