  • Humvee Build - How To Remove Humvee Run-Flats From Tires
    This video shows the step by step process for removing Run-Flats out of Off-Road Humvee Tires, some may call them run-flats from Military Humvee tires (HMMWV).
    When I got this Humvee from a government auction, it bumped a bit while driving. Turns out, the run-flats in the tires were the cause of bumping. Once I removed the run-flats, the Humvee drives much better.
    Basic process:
    Remove the valve stems, break the tire bead, separate the two part wheel (rims), remove the run-flat, re-assemble, and air up the tires.

    Great video! Just a word of caution - those rims are not flanged. So the runflat was what enabled the bead lock to the rim (it's a double-bead-lock.) Without it (or a beadlock insert which is the best alternative) there is nothing but air pressure keeping that tire bead set. If your air pressure drops (a hole in the tire, or you aired it down for traction in snow/mud/sand) and it goes below 20 PSI that tire is going to come right off the rim while you are driving. If you're only using it on the street and are constantly keeping the PSI at road travel range you are mostly fine. But any hole that you don't notice could result in losing the tire off the rim.

    When I was in the Marines (1993-2001) I remember breaking down a bunch of those wheels however they had 2 piece aluminum run flats inside. One thing to remember is that the beadlock is now gone. Not sure if that bothers you. I like your methods. We had to use nothing but hand tools to break them down. It was a workout. I like the nature sounds in your videos. Keep them coming....

    Easy way to remove the tyres !! I’ll explain my wife I need a second humvee to do this 🤣🤣🤣 or even a third one to remove the run flat !!
    And removing the valve stem allows to have a better air flow getting inside the tyre.

    Those are the newer one piece run flats. The older style was a 2 piece aluminum ring that bolted together. The mechanics in the military also taped on some grease packets to the run flats so when the tire did go flat the grease packets popped. It keeps the tire from getting ruined by the run flat ring.

    I had a blowout on my Humvee at highway speed. Was not fun getting it safely stopped. And I was lucky it did not cause an accident. Looked up the tire codes. All of the tires were close to 17 years old. I bought 6 new Wrangler MT military tires and had them all mounted and balanced by an AM General trained tech (two spares). The tech. also explained that the run flats also serve to prevent a roll over should you have a blow out at higher speeds. He highly recommended against removing the run flats for safety reasons. Despite the design these things are still top heavy. Just be careful if you are cruisin around at highway speeds! When mounting the tires the Tech. also changed out the split rim O-rings and installed the AM General run flat lube in each install. The run flat lube keeps things from over heating should you have to drive on the flat. And the split rim seals should be changed with every tire change. They will also help to prevent flats. Just my two cents! I lucked out and found a brand new AM General run flat tool on Ebay. Got it for $80. AMG sells them for $1800! Another little Hummer tire trick, if you mount the little tread arrows forward on one side, and backwards on the other side, anyone tracking you will not be able to tell which direction you were going. :)

      forward on one side, and backwards on the other side, anyone tracking
      you will not be able to tell which direction you were going."
      aren't those arrows meant to indicate the direction of rotation, so if you put them on backwards wouldn't that mean increased wear and tear and possibly less traction on the road?

      He was right though they flip with the run flat doing highway speed. Can’t imagine how bad they would roll without . Hundreds of pics online with military hummers flipped during transport on highways. . The tires were mostly the issue they blow sidewalls when cracked from sitting not being rotated. Mine are all cracked i need to upgrade.

    Also, you think those rubber run flats feel unbalanced you should try dealing with 3 piece run flats, Much worse.

    Highly recommend not running a humvee 2 piece wheel without some sort of beadlock... Tire can unseat from having to low of psi or if you have a blowout at speed you can have a real problem on your hands. Also the annoying fact if you lose air in a tire overnight and it goes flat, it will just unseat itself.
    I just rebuilt a set of (5) 24 bolt wheels and put pvc inserts from trailworthy fab. Best upgrade you can do

      Mike Allsopp one of the main things is check all four geared hubs for oil. If they sit too long the seals degrade and they’ll leak. If you run them without oil you’ll have big problems. I grenaded a geared hub once. Also If you can find one with a 4 speed trans you’re doing great. The 3 speed is fine it’s just annoying if you want to drive faster than 55.

    • @netassassinsecurity
      @netassassinsecurity 3 роки тому

      You are correct. The runflat serves as a beadlock. Without it, if his tires drop below 20PSI they will come right off that rim while he is driving. He also cannot air down them when off-road for the same reason. A beadlock is now needed as these rims are not flanged.

Do you know of a place that specializes in selling military vehicles? It’s in great shape, supplemental armor, and was one of the first ones released (on road title) so it should sell easy. Your run flat removal is the same as mine only I tie mine to a tree and the runflat to the hmmwv and get the same result. On filling the tire I’ve seen guys use ratchet straps to crank the tire down. When they add air it seats the bead and they remove the strap

    • @kitecattestecke2303
      @kitecattestecke2303 4 роки тому

      To lock the rubber shell to the rim, if you run in off road conditions you run low pressure to gain more tread spacing, tire gets wider and drives better on sand and dirt. With no pressure if you hit the gas too fast the rims spin inside the rubber tire and rip it off eventually..
      Split rims for off road performance, keep rubber squished on rims any time
