    As a child of the sixties I love my memories of LPs and 45s but these days it seems crazy to buy, store and maintain heavy stacks of plastic discs. I suppose some people find the charm of an LP worth producing as a marketing aid or a keepsake item. I would like to make a red or blue record someday just for fun...or maybe transparent caramel colored!

    Working in a DAW and I still say " print" and/or "tape". Talking about an artist's recording and still say "record", "album" etc. Not that I'm cool or retro or whatever, it's just that's what I grew up with. Kind of like a dialect, if you will. I still call Cds "albums" and even Cds are passe now in the download/MP3 world. Nothing to say that it's better or worse, just that it's what's comfortable. Kinda like that old bath robe or favorite pair of jeans....

    Most bought cassettes sounded awful. the real cassette afficionado would record at home him(her)self (from their own or friend's Vinyl or CDs); you would find out the sweet spot of your particular tape material (always chrome) on your deck (I had an Akai GX F-71, which was awesome) and then hit the +4db (or whatever it was) to get that sweet tape compression. When I listened to 20 year old tapes I was amazed how good they still sounded (the trick was to record with Dolby B and then play without it years later to make up for the lost high end). We never liked Dolby C much it did something to the compression to make it sound "artificial".

    Warren working at WEA Mfg (Warner/Elektra/Atlantic) (Specialty Records Corp), we used to press about 350,000 12-inch (albums) per day. We also did 7-inch (45's), and 10-inch. I think there were 40 presses on the press floor. My first job was working underneath them. It was pretty much a sauna. We use to recycle the vinyl trims and such, so you have virgin runs, and recycled runs (cheaper price). They sold it CinRam which eventually sold it and they just liquidated the place, right before the vinyl resurgence. :) We are laughing, because all the execs are probably kicking themselves for selling those presses years ago. If you look at a lot of the CDs, and albums made up until 2003, you'll see the Specialty logo on the header track. It was really cool to hear about vinyl coming back strong. :) I miss working there. It was a fun place.

      Paul Brian Bell, sorry to hear your frustration about the content of this video. Warren asked me to do this first one as a chat on business and career things as many engineers like me have lots of younger engineers asking about how we got where we are (obvious hint hint - hard work, discipline, mentors, and a good reputation) and musicians asking how they can afford mastering and professional production.
      Imagine my dismay when I was told that Produce Like A Pro isn’t about how to pick out groceries! ;)
      In all seriousness, though, feel free to look around the internet for some other actual tutorial videos from me, including some mastering tips and tricks.
      Also, come find me at the many seminars and presentations I do at AES and NAMM where I’m always slinging info on practical things I’ve learned in mastering.

    Another interesting video! After hiring top-notch mastering engineers on all my previous albums, I took the plunge and mastered my new album. I had no choice, as I ran out of money and couldn't see having the money in the near future to hire an ME. I demoed several limiter plugins, including Oxford, Xenon, UAD Precision, Brainworx, Eventide Newfangled, DMG Limitless and I even rented a Cranesong STC-8 (non-mastering addition) for a couple of days. Thankfully, I was happy with my mixes, so I only really needed some very minor tweaks for my taste and loudness adjustments. I spent several weeks trying these limiters and I ended up loving the DMG Limitless and used it on every track. What a superb plug in!

    Yo , i would like to know what are the dimensions of Pipers mastering studio rooms , front to back , left to right , floor to ceiling ect. and Warren what are "the best" dimensions for home studio room only for mixing and mastering , not recording , in your opinion ? Thanks

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  5 років тому +2

      That's a wonderful question! Let's see if Piper can let us know the basic dimensions! I'm not personally aware of the perfect size of a room, I've always just made it work with the rooms I've had, some of been fairly big, others quite small indeed! Haha

      @@Producelikeapro well in my situation my room is 4 by 4.5 by 2.5 meters , so its not the size that i am concerned about but the shape , my room is almost like a perfect cube and in many tutorials on youtube i saw they say that cube is the worst kind of room for studio :(

    You buy the album, which is the collection of recordings. The medium could be vinyl (LP), cassette, 8-track, digital, whatever. Still an 'album' of music. :)

  • @mixinthecloud3338

    It's amazing to hear a mastering engineer properly denegrate vinyl as a playback medium due to the myriad shortcomings of the medium yet hold an entrepreneurial position in the vinyl pressing industry. Seemingly there is no desire to inform those foolish enough to spend their money on an inferior product that the entire professional audio establishment, including the mastering engineer being interviewed here understands to be inferior to digital media. There are character question needing answers here. What would Bob Katz think?

      Hi Mix In The Cloud, can I get your name? I’m not used to having a serious conversation with a channel name! Haha my name is Warren Huart you can find me on www.allmusic.com of your like to check out a selection of my credits. Piper’s position is the same as every Mastering Engineer I’ve interviewed. If you want to go through my interviews with Mastering Engineers I would definitely suggest it! Vinyl has a place, albeit a small place, however it occupies a wonderful niche market for enthusiasts and super fans who want a next level to show both appreciation to the artists they love, experience real artwork, or obviously to play back music on a medium they enjoy! All Mastering engineers realised they were reducing the bandwidth and dynamics of the music by putting it on this medium, however we loved it and continue to love it for many reasons!

      @@Producelikeapro Warren, thank you for your reply. That was unexpected. My name is Adam Kessler and it is an honor to make your acquaintance. I studied with Bob Katz and Al Grundy at IAR in the late 70's. If I were to suggest future interviews, I would include Bob Katz. In my comments I was trying to voice my frustrations with the academy of cohorts who insist on the superiority of vinyl and analogue. And while there are values to the analogue argument, vinyl is truly a fallacy and seems to be perpetuated for no other reason than significant misinformation and a spirited desire to suck up dollars from those who bury their heads in vinyl sands. There are so many reasons why the vinyl medium is so flawed, starting with the RIAA curve all the way to imperfect transducers (MC/MM) and tone arm paths which never follow the arc the lathes used when cutting the lacquers. That we, as professional, would perpetuate this myth seems misguided and even more so if it only affords the vinyl buyer to hold a 12" album cover in their hands just for the album notes and artwork. To say in this day and age that alternatives to that cannot be found, is just turning a blind eye to the realities of our age. Anyway, I appreciate being able to express my opinion here. I have been following your posts for a while now and have enjoyed your interviews of the people and characters which make up the professional audio industry. There is so much to tell and time running out on the telling of the stories of those who established the industry. Thanks for your efforts in the telling.
