Tokyo dawn did the great double display idea years ago with the slick see eq ge. It's hidden by default too so you can start with your ears.
It also had very effective auto gain too. Very ahead of the game.

I agree, there IS something strange going on with digital EQs and sound. I can't explain it either. It is not harmonics. I have that same feeling with Tokyo Dawn Records. I mean, there must be a reason why Dan Worrall is the tutor on TDR's youtube channel (sometimes overwhelmingly much info).
Now here comes another plugin example that illustrates that. Tone Empire's Neural Q, another emulation of the Siemens W295b's shelf bands. I don't know how they did it. Perhaps you remember (I don't expect you do), I'm the guy who used to have a small Sitral console. This little gem got underrated by StudioLife's review in their "Is it shit?" series. They couldn't help wondering why one would need a simple highshelf/lowshelf plugin. Well, this gave me instantly that feeling of blowing life and brilliance into my audio that I had known from my Sitral.🤷

The topic of difference in sound of EQs is so interesting to me. It has to have something to do how the different filter topology is build/programmed digitally. I have not found a good Video on that so far, that explaines that. Maybe that's what you're talking about in the end briefly. It would be amazing to have a video on that!...

I love Pulsar’s design ethos: analog modeling but with the benefits of a digital interface. Best of both worlds. I’ll probably pass on this because I feel covered by their existing modeled parallel EQ, their Massive. But I imagine if you have a need for this it’s fantastic

oh! the different sound... i didn't hear that comment. as far as i'm aware the GML EQ is designed to be very dynamic... the circuit is quite complex, each parametric filter has several opamps and is wired so every band interacts with the other bands. which is why it sounds so "sweet" or "musical"
also EQs can sound extremely different... some like old Harrison desks (ABBA) sound almost like comb filters and are very coloured, due to so much phase shift. they need quite a lot of skill BUT if you have it can sound amazing. if you look into EQ digital algorithms there are pros and cons to all of them (then there are linear circuits, minimum phase shift circuits, IIR and FIR)... and THEN looking at analog you add transformers, opamps, etc. and their characteristics. i'm certainly not an expert but yes EQs can sound wildly different. we've been spoilt with fairly surgical digital EQs lately.
also oops i just bought Pulsar 8200. I don't think it sounds quite like the GML but it's beautiful and just so useful! ... go play with George Konings' again 😊

  • @JimijaymesProductions
    @JimijaymesProductions Рік тому +2

The pulsar is based on the GML 8200, I know that its not exactly a character eq (basically one of the cleanest analogue eqs) but I wouldn't be surprised if there is something in the programming that makes it different to a digital mastering EQ

Reallllly love the idea of the "auto gain" from an EQ plugin! And, between many other possibilities, this might be the main reason why the sound feels... different!
Because increasing one frequency can actually cause everything but that frequency to decrease. We are use to simply hear "more" the boosted frequency with a volume gain effect.
This volume correction is great! Not sure it could beat the ProQ3 though, but might be worthy to give it a good try...
Thanks again for all those nice reviews mister "white Sea"! 🤟😻👌

because pro-q3 and kirchoff are completely linear (excluding the dynamics processing). which is fantastic but clinical by design. not all EQ plugins are created equally and these plugins provide non-linearities. that is like saying... why make a new reverb algorithm when we already have strymon big sky. lol.

THE DIFFERNCES BETWEEN DIGITAL EQS (no analogue emulations) ::::
To my Ears i hear different amounts of Ringing in Eqs.
But the differences are often not minor, but very drastic. Some rarer used eqs have AAALLOT Post Rinig, you can literally make an acoustic kick sound a bit "electronic" for the lack of better words, it rings soo long.
But funny i find that most like Fabfilter, i actually hear in Fabfilter it has a bit more Ringing. Go boost the BAssfrequency of a Kick on it, you hear it. But this is minor and i can understand atleast that people use it, its not soo obviously wrong like in some rare other Eqs where it sounds electronic...
So, and other eqs dont tend to have this Ringing, those i personally preffere.
OK: there are two main type Eqs, fir and how was the other Type called again, haha.. But yeah two types (im not talking about linear vs nonlinear. Each linear and nonlinear has fir and the other Type i forgot name.
Further, Parameters such as "amount of Feedback" is theoretically also variable in each companys eq, alltho of corse many might use widely circulating ground building blocks hence they are often identical, and they sometimes NULL. And thats that postringing from feedback... anyway, i dont understand hudert how they function really, but remeber this from long eq-excursions ..
Overall, its true, they sound very close, even the two filter Types, so that i cant really hear out drastic differences , and really settlet after my Eq excursions with "it doesent matter thaaaaat much, most are just good, nice, like you want it to be . IMHO.
I would love of you would do a big Eq comparison, but you would have to google and ask companies if they use fit (finite impule response or something it was called ) or the other type (infinite impulse response, ) . so you can be shure you got bouth ground types covered. And of corse if you want cover the linear ones too if you want...

I don't know exactly but if it sounds different you can always explain it with the combination of curves: frequency gain + phase response, this are the physical phenomenon that comes to your ear. The internal processing is a detail.
They might have added non-linearities too though.
But it might just be a psychoascoustic effectin the end ... Who knows :p

You would rather buy a $4,000 unit than spend $150 on software that will last you just a few years? Doesn't a real unit require maintenance to last a lifetime? (which is, by the way, another expense for my wallet). And the software will stop working? I don't know about you, but I've seen producers using 30-year-old plugins, so I don't think software is only good for a few years. How did you come up with this opinion? But I know analog is analog, and digital can't replicate that perfectly. However, many smaller studios simply can't afford to spend their earnings on a $4,000 unit (or more). Additionally, consider that if you want an analog sound, you would need to invest in way more gear, not just one unit.

I'm pretty sure it also saturates a tiny bit since it's modelled after an analog unit.

lol why now. That's an oldie. You know what, an old release of the Marquis compressor could be dialled in to do some gnarly but awesome compression.

We need auto gain on every damn plugin, why waste a lot of time and effort tweaking gains to get the perfect compensation when it could be used with some algorithms.

"toxic masculinity space" 1:30. wtf? You probably love bud light. :) seriously, the only thing that bothers me about this plugin is that it's not clear which number in the eq window corresponds to the eq band below. Maybe the colors match and its not clear on my toxic old 13 year old macbook pro. Or... maybe I missed something in the gui. Could be that T-level.
